Interview with Capcom’s Masachika Kawata reveals that he’s interested in remaking the first three Resident Evil’s on Wii in RE4 style.
According to an interview with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles producer, Masachika Kawata, with AMN affiliate site Jeux-France, and kindly translated by NeoGAF member Dascu, there is a possibility that we will be seeing more Resident Evil remakes on Wii. From the sound of things, Kawata has expressed interest in remaking one of (or, all of) the first three titles for Wii; using the Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition style gameplay (and, assumedly, engine). Also confirmed was that Umbrella Chronicles will not feature online co-op.
When questioned why Resident Evil 5 was not currently in development for Wii, Kawata revealed that RE:UC and RE4: Wii Edition will be tests to gauge how well the series can perform on Wii.
In addition, Kawata and his team working on Umbrella Chronicles are still looking into how they can exploit the Wii remote functionalities and/or Nunchuck for the title. He states that it will be more than just a simple on-rails light-gun game. And, as we already know, Umbrella Chronicles is said to tie up loose ends in the Resident Evil storyline. Regarding which titles will be featured in Umbrella Chronicles, only the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 3 were mentioned; no word on if Resident Evil 2 will also make an appearance.
Additionally, there are no current plans for any Resident Evil titles for the PSP. However, Masachika Kawata and other veteran staff members would like to continue the Dino Crisis series; unfortunately, nothing is planned at the moment.
Finally, the interview with Kawata revealed that more information regarding Resident Evil 5 will be shown soon.
Ladies and gentlemen, start your speculation. We’ll have more on all of the above when it’s available.
