Take it with a grain of salt. He usually takes his time deciding on projects.

Now that you’ve wrapped on your movie, are you reading scripts? Are you writing? What are you working on in terms of future stuff?

NICOLAS WINDING REFN: Well, I would love to do a movie in Tokyo.

Okay. I would love to see this.

REFN: I think you will.

Will that be your next thing?

REFN: I think it probably will be. But I haven’t decided yet. There are some other things I’m working on. I like to prep many things and then I’ll decide what it is.

Lost in Translation is one of my favorite films. I love the city of Tokyo and watching it on screen, and I would love to see your look. Can I ask the genre you are exploring for that.

REFN: Well I would love to do like a spy movie something like that.

Is it something you’re writing?

REFN: [nods]

This is very exciting. Does it have a title?

REFN: It’s called “The Avenging Silence”.

Is it something you’ve been working on for a while?

REFN: Yeah, it’s basically a character that appears in my other movies that will now appear again. Having done The Neon Demon, which was predominantly women protagonists, but the character that Mads [Mikkelsen] plays in Valhalla Rising, Ryan [Gosling] plays him in Drive or Vithaya [Pansringarm] in Only God Forgives, I want to make a new movie with that character.

Put all three in the movie.

Hnnngh.

So in for this. Refn likes to take his time tho, we won' see this for three years I bet.

Tokyo? Refn? Past characters? I'm diggidy, diggidy, down.

Nicolas Winding Refn Teams With Bond Writers For Asian-Set Action Thriller, Could This Be 'The Avenging Silence'?

writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade — James Bond franchise veterans who have put their pen to six 007 movies including "Casino Royale," "Quantum Of Solace," "Skyfall," and "Spectre" — are working with Refn on a project that "will have an Asian setting with both thriller and action elements."

One does have to wonder if this means "The Avenging Silence" is becoming a reality, and given Purvis' and Wade's blockbuster cred, could Refn be aiming to deliver something with a more mainstream flavor than we've seen from him before?

The setting should be cool and I'd love to see him do something more commercial with less smell the fart stuff.

I would love it if Tom Hardy came back to play this character. But his relationship with Refn isn't great (I think they made up after Bronsnan) but not to the point where he'll work with him again. We'll see.

Though it would be rad to see Keanu in the role.

I think Refn hated that Drive became a mainstream movie so decided to punish everyone with Only God Forgives...

However Tokyo + Refn sounds fantastic and if Purvis and Wade are co-writing this then it could be something 'normal'. Fingers crossed. He really should stop pretending he's Jodorowsky.

Yes and no.

He wanted to do an anthesis of Drive by making Only God Forgives. he openly talks about it in the Only God Forgives doc.

Just give me a Keanu and Mikkelsen fighting the Yakuza film.

Sexy Cliff Martinez soundtrack and dope cinematography.

DEADLINE: You’re working on a project with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. Can you talk a bit about that?
REFN: I generally like to have many things and multiple ideas and don’t know in what order things will unfold. I’ve had this idea to do a spy movie for a number of years and brought Robert and Neal in when we were working on Barbarella. We have a really groovy relationship and have been working under secrecy — like real spy stuff. I was in Japan recently to figure out how practically I would make the film. I thought it would be fun to do a big extravagant action film; maybe a studio thing with a lot of stuff happening. I’m by no means opposed to doing a studio movie, I think it could be great fun. Sometimes you can invent it yourself and find a way to make it work within the system. But to work in that system takes a certain kind of caliber and approach and I’m very interested in doing it in South East Asia because it’s foreign in terms of being a westerner. It would be funky to do it in Japan.

DEADLINE: So, is this The Avenging Silence at which you’ve hinted in the past?
REFN: Well, I think it may very well be. But it’s always fun to suddenly change things around.

Refn tweeted this out today:

Dear Friends ... More to come but for now Ian Fleming + William Burroughs + N W R = The Avenging Silence

After The Neon Demon I've lost all faith in Refn's ability deliver a coherent film. Still, this movie does sound a little cool.

Neon demon is mostly very straight forward. Incoherent is not a term I'd use for it.

Just curious, was Only God Forgives really that bad? lol

I don't think it's bad. I liked KST's performance in it, the cinematography is good and I loved Cliff Martinez's score.

I find a lot of people tend to over dramatise the simpleness of the story.

I didn't really like OGF but I dug Neon Demon. Refn is one of the most interesting directors right now so, in my mind, nothing he does is ever really a miss.

Besides Mads vs Yakuza sounds too awesome to pass up.

Tokyo would look lovely from Refn's lens.................as long as he doesn't get all pretentious with it like he did Only God Forgives.

Tokyo is an interesting choice. I've always thought Hong Kong would make a brilliant setting for a spy movie. All those political players, the west, china, Russia, even the Koreans all bumping into each other day to day for various reasons as well as the pro independence Hong kongers.

Add that to a fascinating setting and elegant actors and actresses and that's the recipe of a spellbinding spy movie IMO

That sounds really cool. Wonder who he'll get to be the evil Yakuza boss.
