Gravity-Bending Shooter CONTROL Shines In 18 Minutes Of New Gameplay Footage

Remedy Entertainment, a studio best known for creating Max Payne and Alan Wake, is working hard on Control and this extended gameplay is definitely worth taking a look as it features a mind-boggling boss fight!

Back in 2016, Remedy Entertainment officially ended the studio's long-standing partnership with Microsoft to bring their games to the market with 505 Games. The first project that will use this new business opportunity is Control, a project we've been hearing since 2017, when Remedy announced that their new game will run on a new engine, Northlight, and will introduce players to a new universe.

Control's protagonist is named Jesse Faden. She's the director of the Federal Bureau of Control, a clandestine government agency tasked with studying and containing supernatural phenomena. Control will take place only in one, huge and ever-changing location that hides many secrets. According to Creative Director and the face of every single Remedy's game Sam Lake, Read more

In Remedy Entertainment’s Control, the player controls (no pun intended) Jesse Faden, the newly appointed director of the Federal Bureau of Control, a clandestine government agency tasked with studying and containing supernatural phenomena. At its core, Control is a metroidvania that will take place in one, huge, and ever-changing location that hides many dark and mind-boggling secrets.

The creators of Max Payne and Quantum Break have revealed that during your playthrough, you will meet the former director of the Bureau, Zachariah Trench, who will be played by James McCaffrey. If you're familiar with Remedy's previous work, you surely know that he played the titular hero in the Max Payne series, even the controversial Rockstar's take on the character that was released in 2012.

IGN has released a brand new trailer for Control that focuses on the aforementioned Bureau. According to Remedy, this Oldest House is a forgotten Brutalist building that features gates to alternate time-lines and dimensions. The term Brutalist actually refers to harsh, blocky style of architecture that was popular in the 1960s. Be sure to take a bizarre tour of Control's physics-bending skyscraper below:

After a secretive agency in New York is invaded by an otherworldly threat, you become the new Director struggling to regain Control. This supernatural third-person action-adventure game will challenge you to master a combination of supernatural abilities, modifiable loadouts and reactive environments, while fighting through a deep and unpredictable world.

Control is Game Informer’s April 2019 cover story

A deep dive into the next game from Remedy Entertainment.

Control-GI_03-06-19.jpg

Control, the E3 2018-announced science-fiction action game from publisher 505 Games and developer Remedy Entertainment, is Game Informer’s April 2019 cover story, the magazine announced.

Here is Game Informer’s overview of its magazine coverage:

Control puts you in the shoes of Jesse Faden, a young woman who seeks to discover more about who she is while finding answers to questions she’s had about the supernatural her entire life. Her search brings her to the Federal Bureau of Control, a government branch that heads paranormal investigations. Upon her arrival, however, an otherworldly threat has taken over the headquarters and threatens to possess or kill everything in its sight. As Jesse, it’s up to you to harness control over this entity with everything you’ve got.

During our cover story trip, we learned about Jesse’s powerful abilities, such as levitation, launching almost anything with telekinesis, and “seizing” the minds of enemies so they work alongside her instead. We got hands-on impressions, a better understanding of the enigmatic astral plane, and the mysteries to be found in the ever-shifting headquarters of the Bureau, known as The Oldest House.

In addition to the magazine coverage, Game Informer will have a month of exclusive online content.

Control is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.

In Remedy Entertainment's Control, you will play as Jesse Faden, the newly promoted director of the Federal Bureau of Control, a clandestine government agency tasked with studying and containing supernatural phenomena. At its core, Control is a metroidvania, as the upcoming video game will feature only one ever-changing location – the agency's headquarters, known as the Oldest House.

That Brutalist building might be pretty old, but it's still a truly fascinating place, featuring gates to alternate timelines and dimensions. To survive in this hostile environment, the brave heroin will have to use not only futuristic guns, but also special abilities that would make X-Men's Jean Grey jealous.

While Control is being developed by the team that gave us Max Payne and Alan Wake, it's more similar to Remedy's latest title, Quantum Break, rather than their previous games. “In this case, we actually have a supernatural hero who has abilities,” Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen said in an interview with Game Informer. “Sure, in Quantum [Break] we had similar ideas, but I think here we’re really, really embracing that through the different attacks you can do. That was a conscious decision from the get-go: Let’s embrace that you have supernatural powers and go as far as we can with them.”

According to Kasurinen, Remedy tried really hard to design Jesse's powers as realistically as possible to avoid making her abilities unrecognizable to players. “Though they are crazy and extraordinary, there’s kind of this realistic flair to them,” Kasurinen said. “Everything you see is what you’d imagine it to look like. We want to avoid magical [visual effects] like fireballs and things like that. We try to use the art and visuals of this world and use that in an extraordinary or supernatural way,” he concluded.

Be sure to take a look at Faden's powerful telekinetic and telepathic abilities (including those that will allow you to use objects in the environment as shields or weapons, levitating to explore normally unreachable areas, and even mess up with her enemies' brains to force them to kill each other) below:

ALAN WAKE Creators Explain Differences Between CONTROL, MAX PAYNE And QUANTUM BREAK
There's no denying that Control will be one of the most unique video games of the year as Remedy Entertainment explains how the metroidvania's gameplay differs from Max Payne, Alan Wake and Quantum Break...Read more

Just like Remedy Entertainment’s previous projects, Control will be a psychological thriller, but it doesn't mean that the upcoming metroidvania will be even reportedly similar to Max Payne, Alan Wake, or Quantum Break gameplay-wise. While Control will borrow some ideas from those titles (like QB’s time-warping mechanics and MP’s modified bullet-time), it will be a completely fresh experience.

"Previous Remedy games tended to be quite linear," Control's Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen said in a recent interview with Game Informer. "Here, we have shifted our goal so that we have more complex scenarios with our different abilities and you choose the way you want to fight."

"Through the main campaign, you upgrade your security clearance through this world," Kasurinen continued. "And to do that you can actually unlock more different kind of doors and gateways. Early in the game, you will face certain doors you can't access yet. As you go through the campaign and through the world, you get a higher clearance and you can go back to these areas that you had to skip initially. [...] we have also areas that are limited by the ability you have, for instance, levitation."

The studio also wants to give you more freedom when it comes to approaching different obstacles, allowing you to modify the protagonist's attributes and abilities. "It means that the combination of what abilities you have, how you have upgraded them, what weapon mods and character mods you have actually affects the way you fight your way through these scenarios," Kasurinen said.

Yesterday, we learned that Control will be released at some point between June and September, so more details on the upcoming game should be revealed at this year's E3 that will be held June 11-13.

While Remedy Entertainment’s own Quantum Break was quite an interesting beast, their next big thing, titled Control, will crank up the weirdness volume even more. In Control, that will reportedly be released this summer, you play as Jesse Faden, the newly promoted director of the Federal Bureau of Control, a secret government agency tasked with studying and containing supernatural phenomena.

After an experiment that went terribly wrong, the agency's headquarters, the New York-based Oldest House, changed dramatically, with gates to alternate timelines and dimensions now being completely opened. To survive in this hostile environment, Jesse will have to not only master her telekinetic and telepathic skills, but also learn who to use the Service Weapon, an insanely powerful tool that can be handled only be the Director of the Bureau, which means that it's basically a modern take on Excalibur.

In a new interview with Game Informer, Control's Lead Designer Paul Ehreth and Narrative Director Brooke Maggs explain the mysterious gun's forms, hint at its bizarre origins, and show off some never-before-seen gameplay of the ever-changing weapon in action. Be sure to check it out down below:

There's no denying that PC players have one big advantage over those who prefer console gaming – ray tracing. While it's pretty hard to explain what this groundbreaking technology is (one would say that it just a much more advanced and lifelike way of rendering light and shadows in a scene, but it's much more than that), the latest Control gameplay trailer gives you a chance to see the tech in action.

The new trailer, which debuted yesterday at GDC 2019, showcases plenty of ray tracking technologies used in Control, including Ray Traced Indirect Diffuse, Ray Traced Indirect Specular and Ray Traced Contact Shadows, all powered by GeForce RTX. Considering that Remedy Entertainment’s next big thing will even allow you to use some pretty spectacular Dark Phoenix-like destructive superpowers as the main protagonist Jasse Faden, the tech will definitely enrich your overall Control experience.

At its core, Remedy Entertainment's Control is a psychological thriller, but gameplay-wise, it's a pure metroidvania. Not only you will have a chance to freely explore the game's playground – known as the Oldest House – but also experiment with new powers to discover previously unreachable locations.

Unlike Remedy's last offering, Quantum Break, learning those special abilities won't depend on your story progression as the more side missions you complete, the more powerful the main protagonist Jesse Faden, the newly promoted director of the titular Federal Bureau of Control, will become.

According to Control's Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen, Remedy has slightly shifted their goals, so they "want to go for more complex scenarios, more different abilities, and you choose the way that you want to fight,” he said in an interview with Game Informer. “It means that the combination of what abilities you have, how you have upgraded them, and what weapon mods and character mods you have actually affects the way you should fight your way through the scenarios.”

When it comes to the aforementioned side missions, they are the best way to master Jesse's powerful telekinetic and telepathic abilities. Those Objects of Power "are really fundamental and important parts of the game are actually in the side missions,” Kasurinen explained. “If the player, for instance, doesn't get the Shield then what does that mean for combat? It might make certain fights really tough later on because it's optional. You don't have to go and get the Shield if you don’t want to.

To make the gameplay loop a bit less repetitive, Remedy will introduce players to Bureau Alerts, random in-game events that will grant you valuable loot if you manage to complete them in time.

Remedy has also officially confirmed recent leaks from the Microsoft Store and Control is indeed coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (as an Epic Games Store exclusive) on August 27, 2019.

Unlike QUANTUM BREAK, CONTROL Is Gameplay Focused And Less Mainstream, Remedy Says
According to Remedy Entertainment's Communications Manager Thomas Puha, the upcoming Control is more similar to Alan Wakethan Quantum Break, offering players a less cinematic and more engaging experience...Read more

With Quantum Break, Remedy Entertainment tried to make a more cinematic, story-driven experience that would satisfy two groups of players: those who enjoy watching movies more than playing games and those who enjoy playing games more that watching movies. As you've probably guessed, Remedy’s attempt at merging those totally different worlds of movies and games (starring Shawn Ashmore, Aidan Gillen, Dominic Monaghan, Lance Reddick, and Courtney Hope) left both groups pretty unimpressed.

In Control, Remedy will focus more on the actual gameplay and giving the player chances to use their creativity rather than asking them to watch extended live-action cutscenes with high-profile actors. "We want to keep building worlds, but make them places you explore," Control's Director Mikael Kasurinen explained in an interview with Eurogamer, "not just blast through in one story arc then you're done. The world should be something that exists which you can find more things to do with."

"We were looking at people playing Quantum on Twitch," Communications Manager Thomas Puha added. "We'd spent four to five years on it and then it was over for them in eight hours. There's something very strange about that. We want to make sure we can keep building on Control for a while to come," suggesting that the Finnish studio already has some plans for the post-launch support.

"This is our own IP, we decide what's going to happen with it. The smartest thing for us is to do what we believe in, be ready to be a bit weird, be controversial even - let's try to make a statement than play it safe. That's part of the exhale after Quantum Break. Control is very much an expression of that," Kasurinen concluded.

Considering that Control launches this August, we should learn a whole lot more about Remedy's supernatural extravaganza in the coming weeks. In Control, you play as the newly appointed Director of the Federal Bureau of Control, a clandestine government agency tasked with studying and containing supernatural phenomena. After a fatal accident, you have to take back control – and save the world.

Ai its core, Remedy Entertainment’s Control is a modernized metroidvania, but when it comes to its setting, it's actually more similar to the studio's own Quantum Break than the Metroid game series.

In Control, you play Jesse Faden, the newly appointed Director of the Federal Bureau of Control – a clandestine government agency tasked with studying and containing supernatural phenomena – who has to find a way to investigate her former boss' death whilst trying to stop a deadly alien invasion.

Remedy has released the sixth chapter of their Control-focused devolvement diary series, with Thomas Hudson (Senior Game Designer), Sergey Mohov (Game Designer), Mikael Kasurinen (Game Director) and Paul Ehreth (Lead Designer) discussing Control's dynamic gameplay and reactive environments.

While the controversial Quantum Break offered players a similar premise, Remedy is reportedly doing their very best to focus more on the actual gameplay and giving the player chances to use their creativity rather than asking them to watch extended live-action cutscenes with high-profile actors.

Without further ado, be sure to learn more about Control's varied gameplay mechanics down below:

"Fair warning: This is gonna be weirder than usual."

Those are the first words spoken in Remedy Entertainment's Control, and based on the newly released opening of the game, this statement is definitely an accurate description of the upcoming game.

Courtesy of the folks at IGN, the recent footage provides anxious gamers with a look at the first 13 minutes of Control. And while the gameplay isn't exactly jam-packed with action, it does an excellent job at establishing the eerie tone of the story, as Jesse Faden explores the seemingly deserted headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control.

Along with giving viewers a sense of the game's style, the footage also features a tutorial of sorts that's set entirely within an alternate dimension and showcases a bit of the combat system.

Control is currently set to be released on August 27, 2019.
