I'm trying to get the Marvel Graphic Novel line of 10"x7" trade paperbacks, and was wondering if anyone had a list of the 35 or so books that Marvel put out back in the day. I know I have the following:

Issue 1 - Death of Captain Marvel
Issue 2 - Elric, The Dreaming City
Issue 3 - Dreadstar
Issue 4 - The New Mutants

I know the only way to buy these will be ebay...I just got Excalibur: Weird War III, and Milehighcomics.com says a Near Mint copy is $60.00; plus, most times the online comic shops don't have them in stock, and they are near impossible to find...except for ebay. It would be much easier if I knew the titles of each one, as putting Marvel Graphic Novel in the ebay search engine brings up quite a bit of other tpbs.

I don't know where it comes in at number wise, but "God Loves, Man Kills" is one of them.

I forgot these existed actually. Haven't seen any for years.

Because I'm an all around nice guy, here ya go:

Thanks Photojones! That's a humongous help. I know it's going to be a pain trying to get them all. When I went to Vegas recently, I asked if any of the numerous comic shops had them, and not a one did. The one thing I hate is I can buy some of them for 99 cents on ebay; but, the way people are charging for shipping lately, it can still cost me about eight dollars.

Hah! Good luck with this hunt, chief. Tried to do the same hunt down for these MGN's and came up short a good, oh i dunno, 33 books or so. The ones i did manage to find myself (on Ebay) were not up to par condition wise for me, but enjoyable to read nonetheless. Let me know how you fair. Maybe youll have better luck than my sorry ass. :ninja:

I live in Washington State. From what I've seen on ebay, I could get about 12 of them right now if I bid high enough or want to pay some of the prices. I notice some of the graphic novels aren't on the list, like the Excalibur one I just bought and some Punisher ones I found at half-priced books. I would bet by years end I have half, though.

Flea Markets are where it's at; they are a STEAL. I know for a fact Seattle has two of them with very well respected comic book dealers, and they'd be sure to have a good percentage of the books your looking for. I try and go at least a couple times a month to one of them out here, and I never leave empty handed. The most recent trips included:

Fear Agent 1-8 NM ($15)
DMZ 1-17 NM ($25)
Strange Girl 1-5 NM ($10)
The Exterminators 1-15 NM ($22)
The Walking Dead 1-33 NM ($35)
Girls 1-12 NM ($10)

:yay:

Well, I just won an ebay auction for 6 graphic novels. Three were DC ones, and I never knew they did the same thing Marvel did. They were Star Raiders, Medusa Chain, and Me & Joe Priest. On the Marvel side, I got Graphic Novel 6, 7, and 8: Star Slammers, Killraven, and Super Boxers.

I don't know what the hell half those GN's are anyway. "Super Boxers"? "Star Slammers"? What is that, like, the bastard step child of the "Star Jammers"?

I'm wondering about those ones, too. I'm figuring that's why they were rather cheap to get. I did just get #10 and #15, too. I'm hoping the Asgard one is decent. Having that list has made them much easier to find. Again, a big thanks.

"Super Boxers"... and I'm going by memory here, was a futuristic tale about a timewhen the Roman Gladiator mentality is back where hords of people will go watch boxers pummel one another to death, but with spiked gloves and armor. And this particular story features on one young fella determined to be a winner in his poverty ridden life of nothing but losses.

It was written by John Byrne (back when he was actually good at writing), and it's a great story, so you shouldn't be dissapoointed with this read.

:yay:

I have most of those. One that's missing from that list is Dr. Strange Dr. Doom: Triumph and Torment, I'm not sure where it fits on the official list

I'm not sure where that one fits either. Apparently, it's not an "official" Marvel Graphic Novel, and it's not one of the Overtreet Guide's numbers.

did you get the list from wikipedia? check out the notes:

Marvel numbered stories through 1985 up to number 20, but released many other stories in the same format that are considered unnumbered parts of the series according to the Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. Overstreet continued counting beyond the original "official" numbering, following a Marvel-published list of Graphic Novels. When the list stopped being published, Overstreet stopped trying to number the issues - halting at issue 38, although they list 29 more issues published from 1983 through 1991, although the list is known not to include every graphic novel from this period.

technically, if having a number makes it an "official MGN", then only the first 20 are official since they were given numbers. Overstreet gave the next 18 numbers themselves, and then just arbitrarily stopped.

Right, but what's with #39? That one wasn't "official" or listed in the Overstreet Guide. Who counted that one and not the others?

I have no idea, I don't know who wrote the wikipedia article and I don't have a copy of Overstreet near me right now

I think you're missing some GN's from your list...

I was noticing a lack of Spider-Man GN's from your list, such as "Fear Itself" & "Parallel Lives", so I looked around and I found this list...

The Spider-Man "Fear Itself" GN was published in 1992, which was probably the last year that these were published, though I couldn't say for certain if it was the last one.

 :csad:

Damn! Now it really is going to take a long time to get all the Graphic Novels.

There was a "Life of Groo" Graphic Novel published in 1993 by Marvel, but it was in a thicker comic book sized format.

thanks TMOB

also, Phaed, I don't know if you're a stickler for this, but be aware that several volumes (particularly Death of Captain Marvel, God Loves, Man Kills and New Mutants) have been through multiple printings.

There's also a hardcover edition of several volumes as well

Damn! Now it really is going to take a long time to get all the Graphic Novels.

I would do a Google search on all the ones I listed to see if they were indeed "Graphic Novels".

The ones from the 80's were no doubt in GN format, but some of the 90's ones, especially the Punisher & Wolverine ones, might have been in thick Dark Knight formats.

Though I can tell you with 100% certainty that 1989's Spider-Man: Parallel Lives & 1992's Spider-Man: Fear Itself were in GN format.
