Fox Atomic has officially ceased production on its remake of Revenge of the Nerds, which the division had hoped to release next summer, reports Variety.

The project was put on hold earlier this month after two weeks of filming when Emory University in Atlanta, where the film was scheduled to shoot, decided not to participate in the film.

According to the trade, another issue was that Fox Atomic's Peter Rice was not completely satisfied with the dailies and that the film felt smaller than the kind of pic he's aiming to release from Atomic, the teen-oriented label launched last year

The project, which was being directed by Kyle Newman, was a remake of the 1984 comedy. The cast included Katie Cassidy, Jenna Dewan and Dan Byrd.

Hooray!

You all cheer, but the reason it was scrapped was because it was too taboo and politically incorrect, apparantly wanting to push boundaries of the R rating. I'd rather they went ahead and did it if that was the case.

We didn't need a remake of Revenge of the Nerds anyhow.

I'm divided. On one hand it was good to pull the plug. There was no purpose for a remake. On the other, it kinda sucks that now everyone is suddenly out of work. They were working for two weeks and now suddenly they're unemployed and have to look for work as the holiday season is approaching.

At least someone in Hollywood has a brain to know not to remake certain movies and Nerds is one of them.

If that ever happens, it would be great if James Cromwell came back as well. That laugh!

I'm sure they all had clauses that gave them cash if production was shut down. Most contracts do.

Funny, I always thought that new TBS reality show, "King of the Nerds" was secret way of casting a RotN remake.

I don't really understand the cheering. A remake would have affected any of you how, exactly?

I'm kinda torn on this one. As a general rule, I teñd to dislike remakes. They're pretty much guaranteed to suck. Although you do get the occassional gem, such as John Carpenter's The Thing, or the 1970's remake of Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers with Donald Sutherland and Leonard Nemoy.

Revenge Of The Nerds was one of my favorite comedies growing up. The unashamed raunchiness in which it attacked its material was pure awesomeness and perfect for its time. Likely a remake would be a watered down version of the original, and if that's the case I say "Good! No more remake!" But maybe, just maybe, the writers, director, and producers were intending on maintaining the politically incorrect, lowbrow humour of the original. And if that's the case, then we may have missed out on one of those rare "remake gems".

Now we'll never know.

Only in the early 80s could you have an Engrish speaking Japanese and a flamboyantly gay black guy labeled as outcasts.
