My buddy and I's podcast, FranchiseWars, is going to do a "Who is Rey?" Episode on Monday. Our list of discussion possibilities is: Rey Palpatine, Rey Kenobi, Rey Clone-of-Anakin, Rey Anakin-Reincarnated, Rey Someone-New, Rey Solo, and Rey Skywalker. We'd appreciate having a rough count of opinions on this thread, as well as any arguments for or against the options.

I'm gonna say Rey Solo. Even though Leia and Han didn't recognize Rey, I'm open to some idea of explaining that... be it memory wipe, stolen at birth, etc.

I think the idea of brother and sister is a good repeat, and I'd rather see that then cousin against cousin.

I wish more people would respond; there's some fun stats with the polls on Jedi Council Forums since they took two at separate times.

The rough breakdown we're going to do is probably this:

Rey Somebody-New: maximum flexibility in backstory.
Rey Solo: Sibling rivalry and more dichotomy between the two.
Rey Skywalker: familiarity from Luke and flexibility from Mom.
Rey Kenobi: unexpected but familiar family returns.
Rey Palpatine: Evil's not in the blood, no matter what Kylo thinks.
Rey-Anakin-Reincarnated/Clone: Vader gets a literal second chance.

I don't think she's the daughter of anyone we know. I think that when Luke was gathering people to train as Jedis....he had a kid or two (like they did in the old days).....then when Kylo went all darkside and killed the trainees, Luke took her and hid her.

I'm probably wrong....but there it is.

She's Leia's & Han's daughter, Kylo Ren's sister, Luke Skywalker's niece, and Anakin/Darth Vader's granddaughter.

I was half way joking about it but... Okay... I'm putting my money down on a member of the Palpatine bloodline in some way. The granddaughter of Sheev. Perhaps one of a few descendants of the Emperor for all we know? In any case I can see the argument that this would link it all together and requires less explanation that could ruffle feathers and make continuity head aches with the other suggestions outside of her simply being unrelated to anyone previously introduced.

I’m going with a descendent of Palpatine. Just a gut feeling.

I don't know about her being Palpatine's daughter. Wouldn't that be a bit confusing for people who are starting out with this trilogy? Granted 90% of the audience has probably seen the OT and the prequels, but it seems like Lucasfilm is pretty intent on making this trilogy stand on it's own. It seems more likely that she's be related to Snoke, since he's an big part of this trilogy.

Honestly, I'm leaning towards her just being some random person. I can't really see her being a Solo, and we have no indication that Luke ever married (although I find this the more likely of the two, since they could be keeping that secret for TLJ.) I honestly wouldn't be surprised at all if she was just someone unrelated all together.

Has anyone toyed around with the idea of her being related to Lor San Tekka? I could see there being some connection there...

Maybe the midichlorians ganged up on some poor woman again.

This is my current favorite pet theory. Followed by her being Luke's daughter. Followed by her being Han and Leia's daughter.

It's crazy, but I'd really like that.

Have the new books at all gone into Sheev's personal life in any way? Any mention of family? Even in a subtle way? Concubines? Some long time consort? I mean, it's not unknown in the real world for dictators to have some kind of pleasure palace or favored courtesan. And I don't think the Sith philosophy would be against personal attachments the way the Jedi practiced it.

So... Totally pulling this out of my ass here's a bare bones theory:

After the Battle of Endor the Empire starts it's quick and brutal decline. At some point the Alliance/New Republic storm some stronghold of the Emperor's only to realize it was either his pleasure Planet or where he kept his relatives or his long time consort. Perhaps a doughter or son and their family. The first ones in on the Rebel side decide that they don't want anyone claiming Palpatine's mantle with some claim to the "throne" as it were. Rogue One certainly showed the ugly side of a galactic revolution so I don't think we can scream too loudly about how such actions reflect on the "good guys". The people with a connection to the Emperor are killed... But Luke arrives and intervenes on behalf of the last survivor, a very young girl. Knowing the complications she brings (again... a surviving member of the Imperial bloodline and a living descendant of the last Sith) but unwilling to allow the slaughter of innocents Luke feels this is a continuation of his attempt to redeem his father by taking this child in and thinking he can train her to be a Jedi as well eventually. He also knows that if others found out about her she too might suffer the fate of her parents and be killed by vengeful members of the Republic. He arranges her to be hidden on Jakku for her safety and hopes that a similar environment as the one he grew up in will lead to a similar outcome (Is this a well thought out plan on his part? No. ) and checks up on her through intermediaries like Lor and other trusted members of those that follow The Force. He then gets distracted by the rebuilding of the Jedi Order and training his nephew... Then it all turns to ****. Ben's betrayal makes him gun shy to train the girl and he decides it's better that she remain hidden and live an anonymous life away from the violence and political strife of the fight against the First Order. He doesn't want to train her as a Jedi but he also doesn't want her to become a figure head or rallying point for the Order. He thought she would live out her days unknown to the Galaxy... But The Force had other ideas.

I am sure there are holes aplenty in that theory. Please do point them out. But I don't know... I think it would link the films together and explain her power and why she was left on Jakku.

I like the Palpatine Descendant theory so that's what I chose. Anything but Solo (which is already a reach) and Skywalker (boring)

My buddy already poked the first hole on n the theory in that the timelines don't match. Rey would be too young, but if the discovery and slaughtering of the Emperor's family/descendants happens later, when the New Republic is in full swing, say closer to ten years give or take post Endor than its possible for her to still be a granddaughter of Palpitine.

She's going to be a Skywalker or not related to anyone. My money is on Kylo's sister at this point. But she can still be Luke's.

They haven't really covered much of Palpatine in the new books. He's appeared, but it's mostly through his interactions with Vader and Thrawn, some flashbacks of how he groomed his protege Gallius Rax...but as of yet they haven't really touched on his personal life. Lucas had an entire backstory written for the character apparently that the Story Group is keeping as a kind of in-house bible but they haven't really gone into it. Certainly within Legends at least he had the occasional lover.

In terms of likelihood, I think she's mostly probably a no one, but I'd love it if she was a descendant of Sheev.

Anybody got any fun theories for a Someone New scenario! I e got one, but I think we'll end the podcast tomorrow with something like that tomorrow, so I'd like more options.

I am so hoping she is the granddaughter of Palpatine. It would be a brilliant thing to do. Love love the theory best fan theory I have ever heard.

Rey Bridger

Reincarnated Obi-Wan (well Anakin can't have all the fun after all!)

Frey Skyrewalker niece of Captain Pharma

I suspect she's a Palpatine relative or perhaps a clone/ experiment from the New Order. Whoever left her on Jakku didn't mind that she was put in the hands of a brutal junk dealer who didn't care about her, so I'm really hoping she's not related to Han and Leia or Luke. I just can't see them leaving her in that sort of a situation. If they felt she had to be hidden, they would have left her somewhere safe with a trusted guardian, not on a savage planet with a jerk who'd use her as a slave.

I want her to be Obi-Wan's descendant...That way she will redeem him in that she will bring the Skywalker line full circle when Kylo turns back to the light side of the force...

Rey Skywalker. Only one that makes sense, in universe

This is my current favorite pet theory. Followed by her being Luke's daughter. Followed by her being Han and Leia's daughter.
Also my favorite "pet theory" as well...for now. There's always the possibility we don't even find out her parentage on December 15 :D
