Edit: Sony sent out a press release.

CULVER CITY, Calif., October 11, 2010 – Rhys Ifans will play the villain, opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, in the next installment of Spider-Man from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”

The filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing in the forthcoming film.

Webb added, “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

Spider-Man is being overseen at the studio by Tolmach and Rachel O’Connor. Ifans is represented by United Talent Agency, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Independent Talent Group.

RHYS IFANS’ breakout performance came in 1999 in Roger Michell’s Notting Hill, opposite Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, for which he received a BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Prior to that, Ifans starred in Heart, Twin Town, August, and Dancing at Lughnasa, and since then, he has appeared in more than 20 films, including Vanity Fair; Rancid Aluminium, Little Nicky; The Replacements; Hannibal Rising, Enduring Love; Human Nature; Formula 51; Hotel; The Shipping News; Once Upon A Time in the Midlands, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Pirate Radio; Greenberg; and Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. He will next appear in Mr. Nice, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Passion Play, and Columbia Pictures’ Anonymous, for director Roland Emmerich.

On television, he played the role of Peter Cook in Terry Johnson’s “Not Only But Always,” for which he won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor. He also appeared in “A Number.” In the theatre, Ifans has appeared in “Accidental Death of an Anarchist,” “Bad Finger,” “Volpone,” “Under Milk Wood,” “Beautiful Thing,” “Thyesters,” and, most recently, Patrick Marber’s adaptation of “Don Juan in Soho” at the Donmar Warehouse.

Hmm...I won't believe it 'til Sony officially announce it. But what movies has he stared? I have no idea who he'd fit the most as. Maybe Chameleon or Mysterio??

Interesting... I wonder who is he going to be. He doesn't really look like Norman to me, besides, I don't think it's gonna be him.

Wow, that's an odd choice... Electro?

Maybe he'd fit as Connors as well

Looks kinda like Mysterio.
A haircut, and maybe he could play Dr. Curt Connors
Either way, I'll watch it

He's a BAFTA winner so he's got that going for him. People who have seen him in stuff say he's very charismatic and a great actor so I have hope. I have to check out some of the films he's done now. Luckily he's done a lot.

I've never seen him act, is he good?

He is a very solid actor. An odd choice for a Spidey film, good for them.

Now he could be Elextro, Mysterio, Connors (with work on his hair), Chameleon, or even Scorpion or Alistair Smythe. Good.

Combining warmth and rage? Definitely sounds like Connors. Though, he wouldn't really need much "rage" since that's what his Lizard persona does. So I have no idea. I'm totally clueless :S

Wow, would never have seen this coming. Can "express warmth yet rage" (paraphrase), hmmmmmmm........could be Connors or Norman.

Out of left field choice, in a good way. That mean's they're not going to go for the "it" people alone, and those ones they do get, they get for more than the "it" factor.

interesting choice, it's a great actor. I can only think of two characters who can interpret, Electro or Dr. Connors/Lizard

Hm, the warmth part excludes Norman for me.

Wow, never seen him before but he could play Electro based on his looks I think or maybe Connors. :)

After watching some vids of him, I feel very confident in him for some reason. When I saw only pictures, I was like "uhmm...what??" but he seems interesting. I just can't see who he'd be though.

Yeah. First of all, he doesn't look like Norman at all for me. Secondly, Norman is a very cold character so that wouldn't fit either.

Sounds good

The "warmth and rage" part definitely rings of Doc Connors, but maybe it could be Normy too. The "warmth" part could come from Norman being a father to both Harry and Peter, who knows. But I'm leaning more towards Connors.

Webb/Sony are assembling a pretty fine cast so far, it seems.

Hmmm, what about The Jackal?

Electro would be a good villain to start with.
I really want to see a villain that we haven't seen yet.
At the time of the debunked Josh Hutcherson announcement, Lizard was the villain.
But now, everything's been going opposite to reports (e.g. Emma Stone up for MJ but landing Gwen).
Damn them and their misleading words lol

The whole part about him being warm and all, leads me to believe he'll be doc conners.

he's a good actor

the few movies i've seen him in (The Replacement, Formula 51, and Little Nicky), he's done a great job and i liked the characters he portrayed

i've always seen him more as a comedic actor, so it will be interesting to see who he portrays

WOW I love this guy, very good news indeed.

I'm betting on Electro or Connors
