US Reporter to Be Freed by Russia in Major Prisoner Swap

Wall Street Journal reporter Gershkovich to be let go in deal. US, Russia had held extensive talks on prisoner exchange

Russia is releasing Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan as part of a major prisoner swap with the US, according to people familiar with the situation.
The Kremlin is also releasing dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza as part of the agreement, a European official said on condition of anonymity. An activist with dual Russian-British citizenship, Kara-Murza, 42, has been a persistent campaigner against President Vladimir Putin's rule and was given a record 25-year prison sentence in April last year on treason and other charges for criticizing Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

I'm guessing Russia got a pretty sweet deal because this isn't doing Trump any favors. I can hear the criticisms coming out of his camp now. The US gave up too much.....I could have done this years ago and given up less....etc. But the fact is that people are coming home.

Russian government may - correctly or wrongly - think a second Trump administration is less likely now than a couple of weeks ago. Even Russia state TV was griping how the selection of Vance is not helping Trump win. But Trump needed that tech bro money.

Interesting. That's something I hadn't considered. Thanks.

MIchael McFaul seems to think that the reason this worked is that Putin wanted his assassin who was being held in Germany back and that if he didn't cut a deal now, that Trump, not having the same relationships in Europe, wouldn't be able to pull it off.

Interesting take, but I wonder if this might make some in the US believe that maybe the NATO alliance, and friendships, aren't worthless after all. That certainly seems to be the narrative that's being pushed.
