The Cabin the Woods director Drew Goddard appears to have found his next project. The Wrap reports that Goddard is in talks to helm 20th Century Fox's big screen adaptation of Andy Weir's 2012 e-book publication The Martian.

The book, which is currently unavailable pending a print edition from Random House in 2014, is simply described as being, "The adventures of an astronaut stranded on Mars."

Although Cabin was Goddard's directorial debut, he's also well-known as a screenwriter, having worked on television shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," and "Alias" and feature film projects like Cloverfield and the upcoming World War Z.

Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood are attached to produce The Martian.

Matt Damon Targets The Martian

April 9, 2014

Matt Damon is eyeing the leading role in 20th Century Fox's The Martian. TheWrap has the news, also reporting that Drew Goddard, who was previously looking to direct, has left the project due to his commitments to both Netflix's upcoming "Daredevil" series and Sony Pictures' The Amazing Spider-Man spinoff, The Sinister Six.

The Martian is based on Andy Weir's 2012 e-book publication, which issued a print edition this past February. It is officially described as follows:

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that hes aliveand even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skillsand a relentless, dogged refusal to quithe steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Damon is no stranger to the genre. Among his recent credits are George Nolfi's The Adjustment Bureau and Neill Blomkamp's Elysium with Terry Gilliam's The Zero Theoreom and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar both hitting theaters this year.

Although Damon is not yet a lock, the plan is for Fox to now find a director with whom the star would like to collaborate in the hopes of pushing the film to a green light in the immediate future.

Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood are attached to produce The Martian.

Ridley Scott in Talks to Direct Matt Damon in 'The Martian' (Exclusive)

Ridley Scott is in negotiations to direct Matt Damon in The Martian, an outer space adventure project being made by 20th Century Fox.

Scott is sitting in the chair vacated by Drew Goddard, who left the project due to his directing commitments for Sony’s Sinister Six, the planned Spider-Man spin-off.

Scott will also become a producer on the project, joining Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood, who originally found the book the movie will be adapted from.

Martian was written by Andy Weir and self-published by Amazon on Sept. 27, 2012. Goddard wrote the script.

Described as being in the vein of Robert Zemeckis’ Cast Away and Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 (both of which starred Tom Hanks), Martian centers on an astronaut who is stranded on a Martian colony and struggles to survive. Back on Earth, NASA tries to mount a rescue mission.

At 77, Scott shows no signs of slowing down. The filmmaker, who counts Fox as his home turf, is in post on the Moses tale Exodus: Gods and Kings, starring Christian Bale and opening Dec. 12. Martian will be his 21st feature movie.

He is repped by WME and Ziffren Brittenham.

Sounds like a good concept but there have been so many awful movies about Mars in the past fifteen years, for example Species II. I think the planet might have a negative stigma with audiences.

Yeah, I was gonna say...movies about missions to Mars have done so well in recent years...

Doesn't seem to be in a hurry to continue Prometheus.

Ridley Scott appears set to team with Matt Damon for his next project. Variety reports that Scott is looking at taking the director's chair on 20th Century Fox's The Martian, which already has Damon attached to headline.

The Martian is based on Andy Weir's 2012 e-book publication, which issued a print edition this past February. It is officially described as follows:

Scott's next project, the biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, hits theaters December 12 with a cast that includes Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley.

Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood are attached to produce The Martian with Steve Asbell overseeing for Fox.

When is this gonna be out? Late 2015? Ridley's been a real workaholic recently.

2012: Prometheus
2013: The Counsellor
2014: Exodus
2015: The Martian(?)
2016: Prometheus 2

Simon Kinberg Says Ridley Scott’s Next Film Will Be THE MARTIAN

It appears as though Ridley Scott has settled on his next project. Back in April, we learned that Scott had entered talks to direct the sci-fi film The Martian with Matt Damon set to star. Speaking on Jeff Goldsmith’s podcast recently (via The Playlist), producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that The Martian will indeed be Scott’s next project, and in fact the film is gearing up to start production this fall. Drew Goddard was initially attached to direct the Gravity-esque tale of an astronaut who is stranded on Mars and must make his way home, but was forced to drop out of the director’s chair due to his Sinister Six commitments. However, Goddard completed what Kinberg describes as an “incredible script”, and it looks like Scott will next be heading to the Red Planet to bring the project to fruition.

Reminds me of an old film Robinson Crusoe on Mars.

They actually used some of the Martian warships from Pal's War of the Worlds in this film.

Fox Shifts Release Dates for The Martian, Paper Towns and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

20th Century Fox has updated their release calendar, moving Ridley Scott's next film, The Martian almost four months earlier. Previously set for March 4, 2016, the Matt Damon sci-fi project will now hit theaters on November 25, 2015. Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, meanwhile, will take that March 4, 2016 date, moving from July 31, 2015. Finally, the new John Green adaptation, Paper Towns, will arrive on that July 31, 2015 date.

The Martian, based on Andy Weir's 2012 e-book publication, will star Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars. It will face off at the box office against Disney-Pixar's The Good Dinosaur and Jeff Nichols' Midnight Special.

Not sure if to be excited for this or not. If Exodus is good, I probably won't get excited for this movie or whatever Scott has planned next, there's just no way he's making 2 good films in a row these days. But if Exodus sucks, there's always a chance this might actually be good, or he's just completely done.

Ridley is just one of those directors that i always look forward to seeing. And this has Matt Damon? Very cool :woot:. Consider me intrigued.

Jessica Chastain Joins Matt Damon in Ridley Scott’s ‘The Martian’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Jessica Chastain is in early talks for the female lead opposite Matt Damon the Fox sci-fi pic “The Martian.”

Ridley Scott is directing.

Simon Kinberg, who has been with this project from the begining and brought the book to Scott, will producer alongside his exec Aditya Sood through Kinberg’s Genre Films banner. Fox exec Steve Asbell will oversee the project for the studio.

Story is based on the e-book by Andy Weir about an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars and must figure out how to stay alive long enough to get back home.

Since Scott’s commitment, the project has quickly come together and should get a greenlight once all the deals are locked in.

Chastain has been particular about what roles she commits to, leaning more towards prestige fare like “Lawless,” “Tree of Life,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and “A Most Violent Year,” which bows later this year.

More recently, she has been moving towards larger-scale projects such as Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” which bows in November.
