Rivers Cuomo Says Weezer Is 'Done'
Jul 13, 5:20 PM EST

The Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Rivers Cuomo says that, for now, Weezer is "done." Cuomo, the band's bespectacled songwriter and frontman, told MTV that while he remains in touch with his bandmates, "we've never mentioned getting together.""Really, for the moment, we are done," he said. "And I'm not certain we'll ever make a record again, unless it becomes really obvious to me that we need to do one."Weezer has released five albums since forming in 1993. The group took a considerable break between 1996's "Pinkerton" and 2001's self-titled disc (typically called "The Green Album"). The band's last release was "Make Believe," in 2005.

The liner notes of that album led to conjecture that it was Weezer's last. They included a quote from a parting soliloquy in Shakespeare's "Tempest," the playwright's last play.
Cuomo, 36, said he has been writing songs, but said, "I don't know what'll happen with these songs — if anything. ... I certainly don't see them becoming Weezer songs, and I don't really see the point of a solo career. So we'll just have to see."

Jim Merlis, a spokesman for Geffen said that the label had no official response, but did add Cuomo has made similar statements in the past.
Cuomo recently graduated from Harvard and married his longtime girlfriend, Kyoko Ito.

well i gotta say that sucks i liked them.

Ah well, their newer stuff was too emo anyway. I liked their older stuff before they sold out.

Meh. I feel just like I did when Blink broke up. Meh. Kind of relieved though, cause both of them annoyed me me.

Atleast there songs won't be horribly murdered on those crappy Kidz Bop cds anymore.

Eh, it's probably for the best. I dont know how many more "Beverly Hills" I can take. Honestly, they pretty much lost all of their vitality and relevence after Pinkerton.

I'm not sure. I don't think they've really done anything that you could call "selling out" At least that I can recall. Don't know anything about T-C though...

It seems kind of good they're done since they were never that good.

About time, they certainly didn't go 'emo', but suck ass guitar anyone can pick up in an hour, **** drums, could never hear a base, the only thing that didn't completely suck was the vocals, which did completely suck on this last album.

you just started naming bands you like there

some of those don't even exist anymore

oh yeah, Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, Bloc Party and Artic Monkeys were born to sell out, if anything

For God sakes, who cares if you percieve a band to sell out. As long as the music is good. I don't understand why, for a band to have any cred or respect, it must be three stoned guys playing in a garage who no one has ever heard of.

Hahaha.... That's ridiculous to say.

Yeah... Some of those bands don't exist anymore. What of it? They didn't sell out. I was citing examples of bands that haven't sold out... So they belong on the list.

Also... I don't define "selling out" as signing to a major label or becoming "mainstream"... I define "selling out" as changing one's sound to create more cashflow and compromising the art..

- Franz Ferdinand haven't done that. Listen to their EP's and their most recent LP... They are the same band... playing the same tunes. And if anything, they've gotten better.

- Coldplay (The most successful band on the list)... Excuse me... But Coldplay have created something of substance with each new album they put out, it seems. They haven't become over-produced or changed what they're about one bit, in my opinion. In fact... a lesser band would have sold out by now.

- Bloc Party. Born to sell out? Blahahaha. That's ludicrous. They're one of the few political punk bands that hasn't :-):cough:: Green Day ::cough::)

- Arctic Monkeys... This one I don't even understand. Why would you call them sell-outs? They've only released one LP... an independent one at that... and have made it abundantly clear that they're not about the hype.. but about musicianship and the music.

And as for listing bands I like... How could you possibly know what I like? And what would posess you to say that I'm randomly naming them off?
Because there are plenty of bands that I enjoy that HAVE, in fact, sold out. Weezer being one of them.

J. Alba's Lover said, "Who hasn't sold out?"... and I responded in kind.
None of the bands on my list are sell-outs.
End of story.
you form a band
you make songs
you record the songs
you put the songs into a cd
you sell the cds at your shows
you sell out

don't take your favorite artists integrity too seriously, I enjoy a lot of the bands in your list myself (Silent Alarm is one of those almost perfect albums), just enjoy

oh yeah... coldplay is a lame, nutrasweet version of Radiohead, they do make nice, beautiful songs and all, but there's no real content behind

and about Franz Ferdinand, you just said it yourself, the same band, playing the same songs with no evolution, selling out also means not straying from a tried and true formula that interferes in the way of the band's natural evolution

the artic monkeys impressed me with a couple of their songs, but I won't think much of them until they release their second album, remember that other british band that was supposed to change rock and roll? the libertines? those burnt out quickly, and trust me, they won't be remembered twenty years from now other than for the typical "where are they now" shows

yup, people take those things way too seriously, it's like the more people that know you, the less credibility you have

And bingo.

I have a friend who loves both Radiohead and Coldplay, and I was like "If you listen to Radiohead, do you really NEED to listen to Coldplay?"
