TMZ reports that Universal Pictures has signed The Fast and the Furious and XXX helmer Rob Cohen to direct the third installment in "The Mummy" franchise. The site says that the studio is expected to make it official later this week.

It was previously reported that "Smallville" creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were writing a reimagining of the first two films. Brendan Fraser was said to be reprising his role of Rick O'Connell. Rachel Weisz has said she "would definitely like to be in it."

An offer was also made to director Joe Johnston (Hidalgo, Jurassic Park III) to helm at one point. Stephen Sommers directed the first two films.

errrrrrrmmmmmmm i dunno what to say:dry:

Honestly, "****" would be my reaction to any news on Mummy 3, unless they got someone really awesome to direct it.

We were all fortunate the first movie turned out as well as it did, anything after that, they're just pressing their luck.

i see your point,it's perhaps had it's run already

If it's Rob Cohen, it will be decent but nothing more. By default. If it was Sommers again, it would be absolute ****. The man is one of the worst directors since Ed Wood.

Cohen is 10x better than Sommers, anyway.
Cohen's movies are decent, somewhat enjoyable, and watchable.
The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing made me lose my faith in Sommers.

Is there a need for a 3rd film anyway

so...one mediocre action movie director wants to make a sequel to another mediocre action director's movie...

...why am i not surprised?

It'll be called The Mummy's Revenge

I know it

Never liked any of the Mummy films. Lame watered down summer action crap.

Rob Cohen really upsets me...

...he went from Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story (awesome film), Dragonheart (another one), and Daylight (solid, dramatic movie) to XXX (bleh), Stealth (blah), and a Mummy sequel (ugh)...

It's a re imagining of the first two films? So it's going to be a restart for the movie or what?

Sommers has good intentions but he can pull it off.

Van Helsing is a good example. It was a great idea (though a big ripoff of several other stories..IE Vampire Hunter D, Castlevania) but it was full of cheese..NOt good cheese but uninspired cheese.

If this is made, Imhotep better stay out of it.
But without Imhotep, it isn't really a true sequel and more of a spin-off isn't it?

I typed in Mummy 3 and i got 11 pages so i figured Meh:woot::oldrazz:

Great....a lazy mod.:whatever: :oldrazz:

Did I tell you congratulations by the way?:woot:

Maybe, but he has directed 3 movies that grossed more than $100 million in US theaters. So, in the very least, he is a bankable director. And that is what you want if you are a studio (that cares about profit, not the product)

Stephen Sommers (Director) US Boxoffice.

Catch Me If You Can (1989) - Gross - $3,686

The Adventures of Huck Finn - Gross - $24,103,594

The Jungle Book (1994) - Gross - $43,229,904

Deep Rising - Gross - $11,203,026

The Mummy - Gross - $155,385,488

The Mummy Returns - Gross - $202,019,785

Van Helsing - Gross - $120,177,084
