Robert Downey Jr. Is Doom - "Same task, new mask"

I would even tolerate this jarring shift from Kang to Doom if once, just for once, they could have gotten an actor of Romani descent to play him. But no, another caucasian actor for the fourth flipping time.

I tend to agree that it does come across as a little desperate. That said, hopefully the movies turn out good.

Doom seems like an obvious pivot from Kang. Definitely not a complaint…it seems like the natural move given FF is coming out next year.

Love RDJ as an actor, but he’ll need to do something radically different from Tony in order to win me over. My biggest concern is that this casting will undue/negatively impact the perfect ending for Tony in Endgame.

I think I’ve seen a few people sum up the casting best: I’M SO EXCITED! But also…meh.

Count me as one who hates this. Despises it actually. This is beyond any pessimism I could have had about Doom in the MCU, and I was already nervous he was going to end up a more generic Avengers villain. Now he is literally Iron Man. Awful. Just awful

With the Fantastic Four movie being set in the 60s in its own separate universe, I am assuming this version of Doom is from there?

I hope they don't make this a Tony Stark variant who just decided to put on a green hood and call himself Dr. Doom. Downy is a great actor who can be method when the situation calls for it, so I am not doubting his ability to inhabit Victor and bring gravitas to him.

Is this a pivot? Obviously it is. They ****ed up Kang and they know it and they have given up and cut their losses. My concern is that it was Marvel who ****ed it up. It wasn't Kang that was the problem. Marvel just botched his entry into the MCU. How do we know they aren't going to botch Doom? They have their work cut out for them to rebuild the trust they used to have with the fans.

This is going to be studied for years. Marvel was untouchable with the Infinity Saga and could seemingly do no wrong. They nailed Thanos perfectly. Endgame beat Avatar for a bit as the all time grosser. Now they have literally thrown away everything they invested in the Kang storyline because it wasn't working. This reminds me of the Attitude Era in how WWE went from the highs of Austin, Rock, etc to the Katie Vick storyline in the span of two years. And that happened after they bought out WCW, just like Disney bought out 20th Century FOX and got the rights to X-Men and FF for Marvel. The parallels are interesting.

I figured they would make him the actual Dr. Doom. 🤔

Dr.Doom is one of my favorite villains this is disappointing since no way is this the real Doom. RDJ is Tony Stark Iron Man, this is some Stark turned down dark path mess. We won't get a Victor Von Doom for the long run.

Majors put them in a bad spot, this is desperate along with Russos because they haven't really made anything good after.

In the comics Tony becomes Dr Doom so maybe this is that, or maybe he's just playing the voice? Either way it's disappointing and sad

Shocked. I think I would love to see RDJ play a good villain but this is just… shocking. It’s just shocking :funny:. I really wasn’t expecting this.

What in this world does this casting have to do with Tony?

I hate this. It reeks of desperation to capture past highs instead of building something new.

At worst they make him a Stark variant. At best he just happens to look like Stark for some reason.
Third possibility: he never removes the mask
Fourth possibility: facial prosthetics

My gut, though, says he’ll be a Tony variant, which is a very strange choice. Is there any comic precedent for that? I guess it could add interesting emotional moments when people, like Holland’s Peter, have to confront an evil man who has Tony’s face.

Phase 3 = Iron Man (critic/fan favorite)

Phase 4/5 = Iron Man 2 (mostly panned)

Phase 6 = Iron Man 3 (divisive but successful)

This is happening because Disney’s stock has declined over 30% in the last few years.
