Eggers has co-written Werwulf, a werewolf horror project that he will direct as his next feature.

Focus Features, Universal’s art house division which released and financed Nosferatu, is back in business with the filmmaker for Werwulf. The company has also dated the thriller for a North America release on Christmas Day, 2026. The parties are hoping for more holiday greetings as Nosferatu was also released on Christmas Day and went on to become an improbable hit.

Eggers wrote Werwulf with Sjón, who co-wrote heady Viking saga The Northman with the filmmaker. While details are scarce, sources say the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated to Old English.

Initially, Eggers was planning on shooting the feature in black and white, but that is no longer the case.

Suffice to say that considering the setting and the dialect, Eggers is promising another deep dive into a muddy, costumed, and violent time period consistent with his oeuvre which has earned him a loyal film following.

Co-written by the same writer as The Northman.

Eh, I was hoping he'd do something a bit more divorced/different from Nosferatu next.

Focus Features not even waiting for the last clump of dirt to hit the grave of Universal's WOLF MAN. :weeping:

"Our condolences. Anyway Eggers is about to deliver peak."

It's crazy because Blumhouse and Focus Features are both under Universal.

But a medieval werewolf movie sounds incredible.

wait was the movie that bad? lol

Nosferatu was my favorite horror movie in years. Werewolves are my favorite horror movie monster. So naturally...

Post-Credits scene. The Werwulf is running through the forest. He stops by a stream to drink. Suddenly he becomes aware of another’s presence. It has the stench of death. He turns around and gives a growl of warning. The presence steps out of the shadows.. revealing the the frame of what can only be a walking corpse. “You think you’re the only monster in the world, Mr. Wulf?” *wheeeeze* “I’m here to talk to you about the Dark Universe Initiative.”

Yaaaasssss. This man makes the only horror movies I love anymore. I had all but given up on the genre entirely until he came along. Let him do this for the rest of his days for all I care. :mrk:
This.

I've waited my whole life for a filmmaker to come along who is a huge nerd for folklore, mythologies and fairytales. His movies speak my language in ways very few other directors do. His sensibilities are very much my own.

He's one of my all-time favorite directors and he's only made 4 movies so far. The fact that he's only just getting started has me grinning like an idiot.

I mean seriously, outside of The Wolf Man, An American Werewolf in London, Ginger Snaps and Dog Soldiers, what werewolf movies out there are actually worth a damn?

Werewolf of London
Werewolves Within
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man

...that one Boy Meets World episode where Cory turns into a werewolf. :o

The Howling is another one. I'm also a defender of the 2010 Wolfman remake so I'd put that on my list. Silver Bullet is pure '80s cheese but it's a guilty pleasure of mine.
