The film ends with him taking Batman's place, but he wasn't trained by the League of Shadows or even Batman and will mostly like wind up getting shenked on his first night out playing hero.

He won't die, cause that story died.

This is the beginning of his journey. It's supposed to mirror Bruce's journey when he was that age. Early 20's, mid-20's. He will train. He will need some help with creating a bat-suit, he will go out there at first without a cape/cowl (probably like Nightwing), he will eventually be Batman. Plus, Gotham needs time to process what happened and rebuild. It's fine now. It's a city that is inspired by Batman. But there will be a time when the city needs a Batman. He will be there to do it. History repeats itself. On and on through the generations.

That's the point.

In my mind, history does repeat itself, but instead of Bruce traveling out of the country to be trained by Ducard/Ras Al Ghul. Robin travels out of the country to find Bruce Wayne. Bruce teaches Robin like Ras taught Bruce.
