He Da Boss

This is a second-hand but reliably sourced story about the currently-shooting Wolverine movie, the upcoming 20th Century Fox tentpoler that's currently being shot by Gavin Hood (Rendition, Tsotsi) and an issue that begs the question "who's really in charge here?" In one corner is Hood, whose once-soaring stock suffered a NASDAQ falloff last year after nobody much liked Rendition, and in the other is Fox co-chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, who's widely known for being a very willful and meticulous micro-manager.

There was/is a huge Wolverine set being recently used. I'm not even sure which lot it was built on, but the look or mood of the set is, according to a source on Hood view of things, supposed to be on the dark, dinghy and somber side. I only know what I was told, but the basics are that Hood was away from the set for whatever reason (shooting something else, taking a day or two off), and when he returned to the big somber set he was shocked to find that it had been repainted top to bottom on Rothman's orders. The murky-scuzzy vibe was gone, and a brighter and less downish look had taken its place.

That's all I know, but at the very least, given my confidence in the source, it suggests that a creative tug-of-war is going on, and that Rothman, one can reasonably gather, feels a certain managerial-slash-territorial investment in the X-Men franchise (the technical name of the film is X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and believes that he, being the big Fox cheese and an inheritor of the spirit of golden-age Fox strongman Daryl F. Zanuck, is more or less entitled to make his own Wolverine calls, whether or not Hood fully concurs.

That said, the situation probably isn't quite as cut-and-dried as suggested by this story. But I do know that Hood was utterly surprised when he got back to the set and saw what had been done.

Here we go again. I wonder if Hood is going to end up leaving like Vaughn did ? I never believed Vaughn left X-3 for "fear of flying"

Nah X2 had drama too. Most movies do. Especially on FOX. Let's just wait and see.

I like the way the article says "currently shooting" when it wrapped at the end of June. Unless he's talking about post-production (which I doubt).

I hate you Tom Rothman...I truly hate you. You are among the ranks of other Hollywood idiots like Avi Arad, Brett Ratner (who is one of the worst directors right now), and Uwe Boll (who is the worst director right now outside of porn and Sci-Fi channel movies...hell Lifetime movies are better than his movies).

Marvel has to watch by and see their baby get butchered because 20th Century Fox SUCKS. Go away Tom Rothman...go away.

They were done shooting on location so they may have come back to Fox studios to film some set things or maybe some script changes. If not, then yes this is old but it is still grimacing news.

what's the matter with Fox? really...and that's why they're suffering (like what Neto has pointed out, they haven't had a hit in a while)

more like does anyone have his address. YAAAA know what I'm sayyying.

god he's such a shhhhmuck. truely just ugh.

I'm hoping for the best with Wolverine. I really am. Hopefully it'll be on par or better than X2.

Does anyone have Rothman's e-mail address?

I do, but I can't give it out. =\

I understand. There are probably too many idiots around here making a death threat. And that certainly isn't something he deserves. He just needs a wake-up call.

It wouldn't surprise me. Even though it was rough, the footage at Comic Con was all very brightly lit and pristine. But I mean . . . the actual sets and what not. You think they would want some of it to little darker and grim in certain areas.

It does look like this could be an X-men 3 part 2 if it wasn't a prequel to X-men.

Or it could have happened months ago, and the re-painted set was what everyone saw in the Comic-Con footage and didn't have a problem with.

I'm not surprised by it all...we all know what (insert your own derogatory expletive here) Rothman is regarding these films, and there have been rumors about tension between him and Hood.

But hopefully we still get a decent movie out of this. The footage from Comic Con looked great.

Eh, I mean, I did find it surprising how bright and pristine the Wolverine/adamantium/berserk scene looked. It's clear they don't want to dirty the movie up at all and they want it to look a ton like X-men 3.

I hope that shot of James does not stay the same because it did look way too brightly lit. Almost silly, cos-play looking.

Yeah I noticed that to. One thing that struck me was how the augmentation room looked much more well lit and less menacing then it did in the previous films (perhaps this is the set peice they were discussing?)

I agree the dark, gloomy version looks better and cooler. But a brightly lit room makes a lot more sense for a medical procedure. :p

It was also a nightmare/flashback too. And when Wolverine finds it in X2, it's obviously been shut down for some time...so it would look dirtier and more run down.

I thought it looked bright too, but then again, wouldn't an operating room be bright?

Yes menacing would be a good word.

But I mean . . . it also looked a lot more menacing in the flashbacks from both of the first two movies as well. Rundown or not, it could look a little darker and more menacing.

Well, it was a nightmare and Logan's memory isnt really great, so maybe he remembered it a little scarier than it actually was. And like I said before: its a medical procedure, I think they need to see what they're doing so it makes sense for it to be brightly lit. Although the darker version looks cooler.

Sigh. I guess a few months from now I'll be hearing some rumours about Wolverine having a runtime considerably less than 2 hours that Fox will deny until the truth comes out. Then after some mediocre to bad reviews come out on AICN Fox will file a frivolous lawsuit against them in another futile attempt to shut down that website. My interest in this film was always shaky but, now it's beginning to decline rapidly.

poor Bryan Singer, can't believe all the crap and fighting he had to do just to make the first two x-men movies.

and its not like he was some hack director, like helllo, director of the Usual Suspects, 2 Oscars.
