It is bound to do better in China than ASM1. Chinese government screwed both Sony and WB when it forced ASM1 and TDKR to open on the exact same day. Both movies failed to reach their potential at the Chinese box office. China has expanded as a market in the last 2 years as well, so that will help ASM2.

The way it's dropping in Japan and other countries has nothing to do with WOM, especially when you can see the trend early, Spidey isn't as big as it used to be pre MCU and all that, Captain America came in and did big, better than expected and got the lion's share of the GA's attention.

We're fans but not everyone's going to pay a ticket to see two superhero movies in a month. Call me delusional, this is the problem. The trailers have been good, the marketing damn good, just a not ideal release date, it'll still end up at 700 M WW minimum.

MOS is a cinematic masterpiece compared to TASM2.

I'm glad this one isn't getting a free pass from the critics like some cbm's tend to. I do feel for the fans who are disappointed by this and even though I thought TASM2 was one of the worst superhero films I have ever seen I didn't want to spread negativity in what is essentially a fan forum, not my style, never was (which is why I don't understand the likes of ''baumer''). But I guess the ''truth'' is out there now so...

Hopefully Sony get's the memo and improve upon TASM3.

You're not delusional. Competition does matter. But I would say ASM2 has a much better release date than ASM1 did.

Do yourself a favor and look at all the CBM that came out in the first week of May before saying they picked a bad release date.

Yeah, I wonder if piracy plays a role in any way, it seems like the movie has been online (in ****** quality) almost right after it was released overseas. I have no idea how you could watch a high spectacle movie like this that way, but yeah......

@JOE: We're talking about TASM2 specifically, we're in a time where MCU movies are the kings, and where TASM2 is released barely a month after Cap America TWS, aside from TASM facing TDKR in China at the same time, I don't really remember that happening.

Well God forbid if this franchise is on it's last leg but if so why would Marvel throw Sony a life line? I don't know...guess I'll take a look at the US box on Sunday and speculate from there but those reviews could be the lowest for Spidey flick ever. Even SM3 finished at 63% and that rating was too generous IMO.

It won't. They will probably just assess what went wrong with this film, critically and commercially, before putting out another instalment. They won't ditch what they've set up just yet.

...I wouldn't be surprised if they drop their idea of a Sinister Six or Venom spinoff though.

Piracy shouldn't have too big of an effect. I'm sure movies like Avatar and The Avengers were pirated a ton, but it didn't stop them from making crazy amounts of money around the world.

I bet Kurtzman and Orci get fired from writing the script for the next movie. There seems to be quite a bit of praise for the acting, visuals, and Spidey suit, so I would be surprised if Webb is fired.

$700Mil is not enough seeing that they spent around $450mil for the movie and marketing. With Sony just announcing a loss as well as their goal for the movie to reach a billion, the movie not making a profit could lead to more calls for Sony to sell the movie division and this time they may listen. The audience score also may end up in the 70s which for CBMS is just average like MOS and Thor 2, average WOM will not do this movie any favors, people already love to hate this franchise just because it's a reboot itself

As I've mentioned before, SM3 was a completely different time in the superhero genre. It's best to relate the rating to the time period it was released. This film is released in a post-TDK-Iron Man-Avengers world and there are a greater assortment of films in the genre now. In 2007, that was not the case.

It wouldn't surprise me if Sony ditched the idea of S6 in a Spidey movie and kept them (S6) in their own solo movie.
Spidey movies have critically suffered whenever they have had more than 1 villian in the movie.

It's all but confirmed that they won't be writing the next script. They are breaking up as a writing team.

I guess some just like something more focused & smaller. For Sinister Six, with Drew Goddard doing it, it's very promising really, looking forward to it although I'm not sure as many people would turn up to see it.

Being signed on only means that it's harder for him to quit. Sony could just drop him at any time and pay him a fee, the same way they drop artists from their record labels

one has to wonder what the financial impact will be on Sony, who is currently in dire straits as a business entity. Forget just the movie branch. The company itself is in a tight cash squeeze.

That is what happens when you overprice your products and consumers don't have a lot of disposable income at the moment. Sony makes good quality stuff, but they think too highly of it and price their products much higher than similar quality stuff from other manufacturers.
