The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Rotten Tomatoes score? - Part 3

I haven't seen the film but definitely will. I think the reason the reviews are lackluster is simple: the film was rushed (looking at you Sony/Avi) in terms of story and characters and it probably showed more often than not on screen so it's just a natural reaction. Again, I haven't seen it yet so I could certainly be wrong.

I was and am a huge MOS fan but I can admit it wasn't perfect. I also accept it received mediocre reviews but I tend to think that had more to do with preconceived
notions of what a Superman film should be rather than letting it be something else.

That is what happens when you overprice your products and consumers don't have a lot of disposable income at the moment. Sony makes good quality stuff, but they think too highly of it and price their products much higher than similar quality stuff from other manufacturers.

Exactly. And here is one article regarding that sale a few years back. So Spider-man 3 may be on the production schedule, but so was a third Batman installment for Schumacher. And Schumacher was signed for it as well. I wouldn't read much into what studios say about future projects. That's as much about marketing as the trailers. It's also done to sell perception to stock holders.

Rhino is your most anticipated villain? Uh...

And yes if sony wants Webb out he's out. But that's premature at this point.

If this movie makes the same or less as the last one then all bets are indeed off. I don't think that's gonna happen though.
Right now I don't feel any statement of probability is off the table.

TASM2 looks very likely to finish under TASM at the moment.

If it does then a very serious re-evaluation of SONY's "Spidey-verse" plans will be happening in June I'd think.

"I hated the movie"-------------> Webb is getting fired, oh boyyyyyyyy

It wouldn't surprise me if Sony ditched the idea of S6 in a Spidey movie and kept them (S6) in their own solo movie.
Spidey movies have critically suffered whenever they have had more than 1 villian in the movie.

I don't think they'll do that. They have already laid a foundation for the villain group to appear and there would be virtually no point to have them appear and NOT fight Spider-Man in a film. It's too late for them to go back on that idea now.

It would be like a TV show introducing plot-lines and characters at the beginning of a season and the series not acknowledging it for the rest of the series. Sony has to close those story lines while also providing damage control.

The best example of that is this film's use of Peter's parents plot line from the first film. The general consensus was that it was an unnecessary storyline. Sony closes that poorly conceived plot line as quickly as possible with a big action scene to try to build some interest in the plot (damage control) in TASM2. I predict that by TASM3, the plot-line will barely be mentioned.

They're not going to dump Webb. From what I've been reading the problem in the movie is the script, there's just too much going on. The director is always the easy target.

Everyone remembers when Maguire was signed for SM4&5 with a $50m payday and Raimi had turned in the first draft for SM4 with Vulture?

Then that didn't happen and boom-----TASM a few years later.

Nothing is certain even with ink on paper.

You don't see how totally different the two situations are? Sony is obviously satisfied with Webb's work, movie might not do as much as they expected it to, they'll just have to go less crazy on marketing next time and handle the budget better.

Hi baumer! (WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot from BOF!!)

Well, I do think that this will at least open well this weekend -- it may be frontloaded, and we could see some larger-than-typical erosion on Sat./Sun…. but I do think it'll have a $100+mil. opening. Because… Spidey.

After that, it'll be all on WOM.

It's worth mentioning that franchises have come from worse setbacks. The most notable example is the disappointing QoS and the excellent Skyfall. Same characters, same universe.

Yea true but as a director he will take the flack more. His editor must be included aswell.

True. That is why there is still hope for the franchise. I think Sony will bring a much stronger film next time around. It's just a shame for people like me who did not particularly enjoy the first film, because it's already been two strikes.

Yep. Then when he said (essentially) "Hey guys.
Not comfortable turning out a good film with your timetable"...fired.

Sad.

Sony's timetable is kinda the problem now isn't it?

The last two installments have had tons of oversight from the suits and it's not been a good thing. The quality and reception of each film since the suits got highly involved with Raimi's SM3 has only gotten worse.

No Raimi knew that script was trash they (maguire/raimi left no one was fired!

Scale it back and get back to basics. I think S6 is a dreadful idea. If you want to have them ruin their own solo movie, fine, but don't let them spill over and ruin ASM3.

If you want to discuss future Amazing Spider-Man movies, please go to the correct forum.

Never be used in the same sentence? TASM made more than TF lol. TF2 and TF3 are what made the huge bucks, but his first crack at it only brought in around 700M WW. Cut Webb some slack.
Transformers was untested as a brand for "all general audiences" when it debuted. It was frankly ridiculed for the idea of taking a "toy commerical" from cartoon to live action "general audiences" film. Bay proved it could work. So his $700m WW+ was huge.

Spiderman had been a proven brand, on film, thanks to Raimi so Webb's job was easier and he still managed to make a less interesting installment with 3 films already done.

Better comparison will be to see how Bay's TF4 does vs TASM since both are also the start of new trilogies and the 4th overall big screen entries.

Edit: 500th POST!!!

How do we know it was their fault. It might have been Webb's fault. He might have messed with their script. Maybe he's on some sort of medication.

Hahahaha! I don't know about that but while we can blame the screenwriters, and rightfully so, Webb is the director - one of the last ones to oversee that the script is quality. It's not like he looked at the script and was like "Aw alright, it's not that great but I can't make any changes! I'm not in any position of power to do so!" He is the film director and in a position of power to make certain changes.

I would argue that maybe Sony's execs are the real puppetmasters of this tragedy. Perhaps they just want Webb to execute the script, since the script is essentially a "Powerpoint slideshow" of the franchise's future.

Still, I think Webb is one of the problems as to why this is getting critically panned.

The 3rd act of MoS is a disaster and this is coming from someone who 'kinda' enjoyed the movie.

I loved MOS from beginning to end. For it's one of the exceptions to the RT rule which in my opinion usually gets movies right by overall consensus. Now with ASM2 they're all saying the same things. Which is that it's basically an "okay" movie but we're talking Spider-man here so should simply being okay be acceptable at this day and age?
