The Dark Knight Rises Roven: Joker Could Return

Maybe, but, first - we can't be sure at that point that the next movie will be the last; Nolan may return for more (unlikely, I know, but we can't tell for sure until he says he's done for good) or WB may decide to continue in his setting after he leaves (not the best case scenario, IMO, but a possibility nonetheless). Second, it's a bit of a cliche. Third, I'm not so sure that in the Nolanverse their bond is so strong; oh, sure, the Joker feels that way, but I never got the impression that Batman is so fascinated by him.

I dunno how it is cliche. It's the complete opposite of cliche. Every single super hero movie ever (apart from the FFs) have new villains for every new film. Why? Why do that? I think they could really break the mould by having a continuous menace, and what better villain than the Joker for that? He doesn't even need to be the main villain, he has already been introduced, just have him as a "spanner in the works" for the new main villain AND Batman.

Why? Because they want to present as much of their rogues' galleries as possible, I'd guess. And given the fact that Batman has the best rogues' gallery ever, it would be a crime not to give other villains the chance to shine.

Nolan's been adamant in the past about the story and the needs of the story dictating what he ends up bringing to a film. He doesn't say to himself, oh we need to make TDK darker and the tone must be so nihilistic and crazy. He doesn't start there, he just followed the logic of where BB ended and built on that story.

That being said, I am pretty firm in the belief that the Joker is going to be back in the next movie. No question. If you take Nolan at his word that finding the needs of the story is most important, then how could he write a story ignoring Joker? The character left too big an impact on the last movie for him to be sacrificed because Heath Ledger has passed away.

It'll take a delicate touch to do this right, but I'm convinced Joker will be back.

Well, I agree, in a way, but I think that it could be arguable that the impact is bigger than the character here. Should Nolan deal with the impact of the coming of the freakish and insane criminals? Sure. Does he need the Joker to show up for that? I suppose not.

yeah, im not saying joker needs to headline the next movie, far from it. but batman is gonna want to check in on the craziest most dangerous person he's ever met no?

I heard an interesting idea the other day, for a Joker scene
(that kinda avoids the look issues, I guess, it would still need a recast, but, not really, if that makes sense?)

the idea was basically to have the Scarecrow try to break the Joker out of Arkham.
the Scarecrow, pumps fear gas in to the vents, or something, and while everyone’s under the gas he goes in to get the Joker

anyway, the point is that you only see the Joker through the eyes of those under the fear gas, so, he'd look all crazy and creepy (while, crazier and creepier) it would probably be mostly CG'd
therefore, you wouldn't be able to tell who it is, and it wouldn't matter that its not Heath

Why, if he's locked away for good in Arkham? Besides, I don't think that after TDK Batman would be able to just come over at the asylum to pay a visit to his buddy.

Agreed here. If Batman has his way, he'll never have to see the clown ever again.

if he wanted to get into Arkham I trust Batman could break in. But furthering my point about the needs of the story dictating what happens, Dent's reputation and Batman's slew of new troubles with everyone in Gotham who will now hate him, there's lots of momentum from the last film story wise that will certainly carried over, even down to specific plot points, apart from all the new elements brought in. So I really expect Joker to have a presence in a new movie.

Right now, I don't think I'd want the Joker back. I just think in a way it would be disrespectful to what Heath has done and the niche he's carved for himself and the character. Had he lived I would have totally wanted him back for the third. The great thing about the Star Wars movies is that Darth Vader was in all 3. Sure other villians were added etc, but you could expand upon the character in each film as well as the good guys. No idea why superhero movies always have to dump the villain for the next film. Even though I wasn't crazy about Nicholson as the Joker, I always hoped he would have shown up in one of the sequels...even if it was for just a moment....

Think about it. Joker is obsessed with Batman. Joker thinks Batman "completes him". Would Joker just sit in his cell, twiddling his thumbs while the guy who gives his life meaning is out there being hunted by the police and other villains or whatever? Of course not! Joker has always wanted Batman all to himself. And with his knack of escaping capture added to the fact that he can't let the guy who "completes him" get caught or killed by anyone other than him I think it would be pretty stupid to just leave him sitting in a cell.

exactly, joker loves messing with Batman and Arkham surely won't hold him forever.

there will be more batman films beyond batman 3, whether its a true batman 4 or another reboot or something, but more batman films are inevitable unless (somehow) Batman 3 bombs. and if B3 is even half as big as TDK, whether nolan comes back or not im pretty certain theyd carry over the realistic/nolan style imo, but if nolan doesnt come back for 4, there are plenty of other directors that could do the job well (david fincher imo is a great choice)

If they get new directors.....do you think they should try to keep bale/caine etc...or....new cast? With a new cast...a new joker wouldn't seem that weird I guess. But I think Bale is awesome as batman...so i would hate to see him go

Dont be so sure.

Na man there will always be Batman films. Whether it's five years after Nolan's done or 50 years after Nolan's done.

LOL! Arkham is a revolving door. It never holds anyone.
I see the revolving door as being easier to resolve in a film series than it is with the comics. The comics have to deal with a continuous timeline involving Arkham, and eventually you'll run out of villains to use if they all stay captive.

Film, at best you'll have 5 or so films to deal with. Within that quantity, you can conceivably "write in" an interesting way to explain how Arkham manages to lose their patients.

Personally, I always looked to Hugo Strange and/or Harleen Quinzell as prime candidates for being the corrupt individuals who secretly let inmates escape.

Hmmm maybe. But I don't think it will be that long. It all depends if the general audience gets sick of comic book films and show that with their feet, or lack there of.

If in 10 years time comic book movies are still hot properties I would expect another Batman franchise. Hopefully in a different direction than Nolan's though. I wanna see a Bat film in the mould of Sin City or something like that. As though the comic has been ripped off the page and put onto the big screen.
