Scarlett Johansson and Rupert Sanders team for tale of Pittsburgh massage parlour queen

New Regency has won an auction for Rub & Tug, an American Hustle-like true story in which Rupert Sanders will direct Scarlett Johansson in the fact-based story of a woman who flourished in a male-dominated business of massage parlors and prostitution by essentially taking on the physical identity of a man. New Regency prevailed in a worldwide rights deal over five other bidders. Sources said the hope is to start production in February at a budget north of $30 million.

Jean Marie Gill was a larger than life character who took on the mob and became the crime kingpin of 1970s Pittsburgh through her empire of illicit massage parlors and an anabolic steroids ring that helped fuel the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL dynasty, all the while cross-dressing and leaning on her allies in the gay community to help grow her empower. However, it is Jean’s fiery romance with her girlfriend Cynthia that truly defines her and forms the emotional core of the story.

The complex anti-hero offers Johansson perhaps her most challenging role since Lost in Translation.

Gary Spinelli wrote the script and the film will be produced by Joel Silver, Tobey Maguire, Scarlett Johansson, Matthew Plouffe, Gary Spinelli, Jonathan Lia.

Gill ran a string of businesses, including the Spartacus Massage Parlor in McKees Rocks, the Japanese Meditation Temple and the Taurean Models massage parlor. A former blacksmith with a long rap sheet of providing prostitutes, she was a colorful figure: known to spout Irish poetry and when law enforcement raided Spartacus in 1978, Gill reportedly threw a birthday cake at an undercover state trooper. Her notoriety prompted The Pittsburgh Press to award gill the “Dubious man of the Year” and “Dubious woman Of The Year” titles, explaining: “She embodies business savvy, sexual confusion and an eye for fashion like no one since Michael Jackson.”

Her brazen defiance of the mob left the question who would end her first: criminal enterprises or law enforcement. One of her employees at the Gemini was killed after she opened a letter bomb that destroyed the massage parlor. Another of her massage parlors was burnt to the ground in a suspicious fire. But it was law enforcement that brought her to heel in 1984 on income tax fraud. She was sentenced to a 13-year prison stretch, but got three years taken off when she agreed to close three massage parlors within 24 hours. She was released in 1987 and died at age 72.

Will be very interested to see what she can do with this.

Gain weight, fat-suit or skip that and have her be a skinny dude?

She'll need to go through a Christian Bale-level body transformation to pull that off.

Saw the title and who was starring and immediately clicked. :o

Sounds great. It is definitely a fascinating story.

Is the "Darkest Hour" makeup team still around?

Also, how does Rupert Sanders keep getting these high-profile gigs?

ScarJo wants an Oscar nomination/win so bad

She's too pretty for the role, unless they work a miracle with prosthetics. Still, wouldn't it just be easier (and cheaper) to get a different actress that was better suited for the part?

Maybe if David O. Russell was directing this, but Rupert Sanders being at the helm means this has the probability of being a hot mess. I guess stranger things have happened. Also, something tells me that won't be the final title. :hehe:

I guess it could work, look at Charlize Theron's transformation in Monster, but idk, I feel that Theron is a way better actress than Johannsson. Film sounds interesting, but that title is so wrong... :funny:

It's like the name of a pub that offers more than your choice of drinks.

Tambor was fired for harassing trans women but okay!

Heath Ledger was straight when he played a cowboy who loved a man. Did anyone have a problem with that?

I don't get why people are bringing up Tambors harassment. Yes it was bad, but he still successfuly played a trans individual. And then Leto and Huffman did great too. Same with Hilary Swank

However yeah they could've a trans actor. And I don't wanna hear the "Hollywood is a business and they need to sell tickets"That's the same excuse people gave with Aloha, Ghost in the Shell with their casting

And Johannson has proved her liberal leanings, believing women support, and feminism goes out the window when it affects her needs

I don't have a huge problem with the casting, but then again I'm not trans so maybe it's just not something I get. However I don't see why they don't just cast a trans actor

EDIT: I just realized this is the same director who did Ghost in the Shell haha. They aren't ****. And damn why even give this guy another shot at something?

Faux outrage on social media once again.

Whatever just more millennial noise. :o

Casting a trans actor would've been the right thing to do, but the chances of getting Hollywood financing and distribution would've been nil.

Also...... we're talking about the writer/producer behind sausage-fest movies like American Made, The Nice Guys, Predator, and Die Hard. Plus Rupert Sanders is directing. Hardly a team that screams LGBTQ accuracy.

Still a dumb thing to say in this day and age.

We’ve reached peak faux outrage. The people complaining about this dont know the first thing about how movies get financing. Without ScarJo this doesn’t get made. On top if that, it’s acting for crying out loud. There’s not exactly an abundance of trans actors going around either. And the idea that someone should step down and give the role to someone else is ludicrous. This obsession some Americans have with group identity is honestly disturbing to me.

It's people posting anger on twitter to be part of a conversation. Most likely non-trans people.
