Warner Bros. has asked Ben Affleck to direct Tales From the Gangster Squad, reports Vulture.

Adapted from a series of LA Times articles, Gangster Squad explores the true story of a band of secret "off the record" police task force who went after Meyer Harris "Mickey" Cohen, a high-profile gangster who was a member of the "Jewish Mafia" in the 1940's. The screenplay has been drafted by former LA cop and novelist Will Beall.

At this time, Affleck has not accepted the offer and is allegedly weighing the project against a few other options.

Sounds like a movie that he would be perfect for although I would like to see Ben take on a different genre.

Jewish Mafia? I didn't know such a thing ever existed.

Sounds like fantastic cast line-up if all three actors joins the project.

This sounds like it could be very good.

Anthony Mackie May Join 'Gangster Squad'

Mackie has an offer to star opposite Brad Pitt in Par's "World War Z," and is nearing an offer to join WB's "Gangster Squad."

I think this could cause some scheduling conflicts, so I guess Mackie have to choose between this or World War Z.
Anyway, it's the benefit for either projects to have an excellent actor on-board.

Bryan Cranston is in negotiations to join the cast of "The Gangster Squad," the Warner Bros.-Village Roadshow period police saga opposite Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Michael Pena and Anthony Mackie. Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland") is helming from a script by former Los Angeles Police Dept. officer Will Beall.

Project is based on the Los Angeles Times' seven-part series "Tales From the Gangster Squad," to which Warner acquired the rights two years ago. The articles, penned by Paul Lieberman, chronicled the LAPD's struggle with increasing crime and corruption in the 1940s by forming the Gangster Squad to keep East Coast organized crime figures out of Los Angeles.
Cranston, who's repped by UTA, is currently filming New Line's "Rock of Ages" and Sony's "Total Recall."
