Marvel: RUINS. Apparently the most grostesque What If ever written. Can anyone tell me more about it, post scans? I have only read the wiki and I am interested.

Silver Surfer commits suicide.

Captain America and Iron Man are killed for protesting the war..

Hulk is just a mass of tumors and puss...

Mutants and locked up and mutilated....

Basically, the idea is the Marvel Universe gone wrong. Most of the scientific accidents we saw in the Marvel Silver Age went the more likely rout of disfiguration and death. Others did get super powers, but have little or no control over them. The few Super Heroes there are have been hunted by the government and either arrested, killed, or turned into laughing stocks. The last real hope this version of the MU had was The Avengers, and as you said they were killed by the Government for posing too much of a threat. It's all about Phil Sheldon, the main character from Marvels, reaserching all of this wierd horrible stuff, coming to believe that something happened to the world that caused the good to go bad.

Question dude SB wanted stuff not from the wiki. All you did was sum up the wiki.

Sorry. I only really skimmed what he wrote.

Man ruins is depressing. I think Eli did a thread on this once.

I'm trying to find a torrent for it right now. It's on Demonoid.com...But I can't register. :(

Are you sure you want to read it SB? Its going to be all depressing and twisted.

This looks like a question for the Stupid Marvel Questions thread...

Warren Ellis first work for Marvel from what I've read.

I thought it was fun. A lot of What Ifs are cool in the same way a lot of Twilight Zone episodes are cool--they offer a glimpse at how one small change could have resulted in haunting, apocalyptic scenarios, thus highlighting the precarious nature of life itself. Ruins was pretty good at presenting arguably the most awful, hopeless potential Marvel universe ever. The art was pretty good, too.

More awlful and hopeless then Bendis written continuity?

I just saw an opportunity to make a lame Bendis joke and chose not to resist.

Yeah, with alternate Universes you can get away with whatever you want to do. That's in part what makes them fun, it can also make it hard to write a truly interesting one though.

What mostly turned me off from the book was the art. It was... gross.

And I've read Miracle Man, for cryin' out loud.

I've been calling people philistines for at least a year. I stole it from The Squid and the Whale, after my friend told me about a scene in it. :o

That movie makes me feel weird about acedemic American society.
