This is nuts: Marvel and ABC Studios are developing a New Warriors comedy series that would put the spotlight on little-known comic book heroine Squirrel Girl, TVLine has learned exclusively. Both Marvel and ABC Studios declined to comment, but sources confirm that the half-hour project is currently being shopped around to cable and streaming outlets.

Described as the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers, one of whom would include Doreen Green (aka Squirrel Girl). For the record, SG can do more than just communicate with the world’s vast squirrel population; she also possesses super-speed and strength.

Squirrel Girl — who in the comics would go on to serve as the nanny to Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ daughter — made headlines recently when Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick expressed a desire to play the cheeky character on the big screen, telling Net A Porter, “My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!” (Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo in turn said Kendrick would be “perfect casting.”)

Can Marvel even use Firestar and Darkhawk? Firestar is a mutant and Darkhawk is tied to the Shi'Ar. Won't New Warriors cause rights issues with Fox?

Sounds good to me! I'd love if they did it mockumentary style, like the New Warriors reality show. Only, you know, without accidentally causing mass child murder...

This kinda sucks for the New Warriors property. The name and team is dope, but they are using it for a comedy project?

I don't know how I feel about this, but it sounds like it could be moderately funny or extremely bad, cheap and corny.

Only good thing about this is I guess it means Squirrel Girl is a character the movie guys let go meaning the chances of her appearing in any of those movies is little to none.

Well, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are both mutants, former Brotherhood members and Magneto's kids. So there's that.

Firestar could be either FOX or Sony, as she was originally created for Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends. Darkhawk has only be tied to the Shi'Ar due to a retcon in 2009. Before that he never was, so he should be fine.

Never knew that.
Avengers got the Lensherr twins, I can see Firestar and the likes be used in MCU, if they choose to use them.

I hope they make it in that cute chibi style and they don't make it too serious. I would actually love to see it as a slice of life type anime. But probably won't happen

So what do you guys think of the actresses who are rumoured, fancasted or campaigning for the role of Squirrel Girl? And is there any other actress you would suggest?

This is from left to right Eden Sher, Anna Kendrick and Shannon Purser.

I think Kendrick is very unlikely to be part of a tv show of a smaller scale like this. I also think she doesn't have the right looks at all for the role. I don't really care if SG is skinny or chubby or tall or short, but I think Kendrick has too much of the conventional hollywood star/model kind of beauty, which I don't think fits SG well.

Purser looks the most like Unbeatable Squirrel Girl at least, but that isn't necessarily SGs definitive look and I haven't seen her in anything (didn't see Stranger Things yet), so I have no idea how her acting is.

Sher I am at least certain of she could pull of the SG kind of comedy. Plus she's already met with Marvel, so I think that slightly increases her chances.

I could see the line up consisting of maybe five or six of these characters New Warriors characters Night Thrasher, Squirrel Girl, Speedball, Aegis, Sun Girl, Debrii, Rage, Microbe and Hummingbird.

So the rights to all of the New Warriors from over the years are probably something like this:

Marvel: Night Thrasher, Nova, Marvel Boy/Justice, Speedball, Silhouette, Ultragirl, Debrii, Turbo, Timeslip, Haechi, Tigra, Dagger, Aegis, Aja, Darkhawk, Gauntlet, Grace, Hindsight, Kaz, Microbe, Alex Power, Rage and Slapstick

Sony: Hummingbird, Sun Girl, Helix and Scarlet Spider

FOX: Beak/Blackwing, Bolt, Chamber, Longstrike, Phaser, Renascence, Ripcord, Skybolt and Tempest

Universal: Namorita

Firestar could be either Sony or FOX, Water Snake could be Universal or Marvel

The retcon is irrelevant. It only has to do with who they are associated with.

Firestar strikes me as the least likely, though. She seems either Fox or Sony.

BTW, can anyone recommend a sampling of New Warriors stories to read? Luckily (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective), I will be getting to some of them when they cross over with X-Force, but I know nothing before or after that.

Seems like the bottom of the barrel is being scraped. It still makes more sense than that Most Wanted show that was planned. ABC don't get the good Marvel stuff for some reason.

This is the fourth Marvel show in the last year that ABC has either passed on or developed for a cable or streaming service (Marvel's Most Wanted, Cloak and Dagger, Runaways, New Warriors featuring Squirrel Girl), despite appearing to be a decent fit for the network. After AOS leaves (this year?) that would appear be the end of Marvel on ABC for the foreseeable future.

Please this isn't even remotely close to the bottom.

When we start getting to Fool-Killer, Triathlon and the Forbush Man then maybe.

Probably because the two ABC Marvel shows they already tried weren't the resounding successes ABC was hoping for.

Would there still be demand for Kendrick? Because I'm wondering if she'd sign up for a half hour comedy television show. Yes, television is where it's at today, but given the disconnect between Marvel TV and the greater MCU movies- which, as a sidenote, I much prefer if it keeps Agents of SHIELD out of the equation- it doesn't seem like the character would get much visibility beyond the show itself.

I'm surprised ABC didn't take a shot at Runaways, though its for the best as Hulu is a much better home. I suppose the network could air a Ms. Marvel or Damage Control program, but I am not that confident in either show.

Major Network Tv outside of reality shows and procedural is generally not doing great anyway. It is becoming less creative in order to appeal to a wider older audience. Younger audiences are turning more to cable and streaming networks which produce better shows that fit the 'box set'/'binge watch' generation.

NBC wanted to turn The Walking Dead into a cop procedural and they all passed on Stranger Things.

There's no way Ms. Marvel ends up as a TV show. She easy Phase 4 material. ABC is probably not gonna be all that interested in more Marvel stuff in the future. They had Agent Carter, which was a failure, and Agents of SHIELD which is now on life support. It's not surprising this is being shopped to streaming services.

Tv series? Squirrel Girl movie or GTFO. Seriously, nowadays it seems that if you don't watch television or have Netflix you're missing out most of the fun.

ABC is looking for the next LOST. I don't think any of these would have the ratings that LOST had or TWD has. Those shows are better off on Hulu, Freeform, etc. Hulu and Freeform definitely need more original content, so it's a good time to get Marvel originals there, as they seem to be doing.

Is this a live action version of Squirrel Girl?

I'm more interested to see Firestar.

While she was created for a Spider-man cartoon, I doubt that has any real relevance on where her rights lay. Not when the cartoon almost certainly predated any of the relevant contracts.

If I had to guess, I'd say she's with Marvel. She's a mutant, yes, but a mutant who has basically no appearance in X-Men comics, didn't originate in them, didn't spend time in them. In the comics, she's first and foremost a member of the team the New Warriors, which is certainly not under either the X-Men rights nor the Spider-man rights. Her cartoon origins don't matter, because the contracts almost certainly don't care about such- in order to be a Spider-man character, she'd need to be such in the comics themselves.
