Civil War Scarlett Johansson is back - The Official Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff Thread - Part 1

A solo film would have been perfect now that nobody knows where she is. We would see her in action alone while showing flashbacks, especially with Tony saying it's in her DNA.

A Black Widow movie should cover some of that "red in my ledger" stuff she talked about in the first Avengers movie. And in Natasha's case, we don't have the "brainwashed by HYDRA" out that Bucky has. Actually, we haven't been clear what "assignments" Natasha had that were assigned by the Red Room/KGB and what she did freelance before she joined SHIELD.

Also, we might need a two minute flashback on "Here's why Natasha joined SHIELD and became friends with Clint's family" but it doesn't have to be the whole movie. A few throwaway lines from Yelena Belova could work.

"Well, maybe an archer will let me stay on his farm for a few weeks and teach me the value of life."

I want Yelena Belova in the movie, but not as the villain. She and Nat are on the same assignment and have to work together. Yelena is VERY interested in Natasha and vice versa.
In Avengers Loki mentions a "hospital fire", and in a TWS deleted scene Pierce lists off "the children's ward" as examples of her crimes. Put two and two together and you can assume that murdering children by setting fire to an entire hospital wing was just one of Natasha's ruthless crimes.

At this point a full-on prequel and origin story wouldn't make much sense. Explaining Natasha's history would work better if it was done in small flashbacks integrated throughout a film's events.
My suggestion for a plot would go something along the lines of this:
  • Natasha is off on her own again, either by choice or because she's betrayed someone (again). Anti-superhero sentiment and the Sokovia Accords are still prevalent.
  • Prominent government and law enforcement figures (i.e. General Ross?) are found brutally murdered over the course of several weeks, sometimes along with their families. Investigation of the crime scenes turn up few leads, suggesting a highly-skilled operative. Police catch a break at the last murder scene when surveillance footage shows a glimpse of a black-clad woman whose face resembles Natasha's. DNA from a hair strand and a spent taser disk match Romanoff's profile. The world's governments - resentful of superhero-induced chaos and eager to quell public fear - launch a global man-hunt to finally bring the Black Widow to justice for her crimes.
  • Clint Barton, Nick Fury and Steve Rogers are suspicious of another Zemo-like frame job at work, but also can't rule out Natasha as the murderer given the evidence and her history. Things get personal as a black-clad figure nearly kills Maria Hill/Clint's family. Their faith in Romanoff's innocence shaken, Fury/Hawkeye/Rogers launch their own manhunt, digging into Natasha's SHIELD files for clues.
  • With both the authorities and Avengers after her, Romanoff is confronted by Yelena Belova, who reveals that the Red Room is active again and wanting to tie up loose ends. Belova presents Natasha with the choice to either return to the Red Room's fold, or face certain death/imprisonment as more people die seemingly by her hand. With no other options, Romanoff travels back to Russia in hopes of finding the shadowy powers responsible for framing her.

Sold.
I want to see it right now!

Yelena and Natasha going back to Russia is on my wish-list for a movie, but less "Natasha is framed for murder." In this case, one of the bad guys thinks Natasha killed her family... and she might not be wrong.

There are a lot of Russian superheroes and villains in Marvel Comics, obviously more common when the Cold War was going on. So, Yelena tells Natasha the Red Room has expanded into "creating their own superheroes." This includes Darkstar, Vanguard and Ursa Major. Maybe the Crimson Dynamo and Titanium Man, although they seem like Iron Man villains.

Given "Soviet Super Soldiers" is dated, let's go with Winter Guard.

Yelena wants Natasha's help to save these people from the Red Room, and teach them there is a difference between being a hero and a tool of the state. Natasha has to find her "inner Captain America" to give the right rousing speech to get the Winter Guard on her side.

But... Sergei Krylov of the Red Room has plans to sell the Winter Guard to Eric Williams of Williams Munitions. Krylov doesn't seem to care that Darkstar and Vanguard are his children. Eric Williams is better known as the Grim Reaper in the comics, but here he's just a businessman with an odd sense of humor. And an assistant/bodyguard named Nekra Sinclair.

The Grim Reaper wouldn't work as he was in the comics. He wouldn't hate the Avengers for "killing" his brother Simon, and wouldn't hate the Vision and Wonder Man for being "imperfect copies" of Simon. But I like the idea of Nekra fighting the Black Widows.

My casting call:
Eric Williams: Jason Bateman
Nekra Sinclair: Rita Ora

And Nekra got her strength and durability powers because she thinks Natasha Romanoff killed her family. Is she right? And Natasha doesn't get an "I was brainwashed" out.

Whedon wants to direct a Black Widow. Considering how horrible his potrayal of her in AoU was, lets hope this never happens

I doubt he will get the job. Considering the huge backlash her AoU portrayal received across the board, Marvel wouldn't even think to consider placing him in that position. One of the Russo brothers would have a better chance at the job than that sorry excuse for a feminist.

Joss Whedon made Black Widow popula before the Russos were even hired, though.

Unfortunately this is a case of "what have you done for me lately". I think Whedon's ideas for BW in AOU had some merit (i.e. Widow opening up a bit about her painful past and being curious/interested in someone with strength but chooses to be a pacifist), but were executed poorly.

Putting Whedon back at the reins of a Black Widow film would just be setting him and the project up for a lot of negative fan reaction that it just doesn't need. After TWS/CW, it'd be bad idea to stray from the tone/characterization that the Russos and Markus & McFeely created.

Exactly. Whedon doesn't need to be anywhere near this project.

Every time Whedon touches BW's character, not only does some of her characterization get butchered, so does her hair. :D

Yeah she was sooo popular after Iron Man 2 and then he just ruined her in the Avengers :o

Anything he for her in Avengers 1, he undermined in AoU. That was her worse film in the MCU, which unfortunately for him, is people's last impression for him. The Russo's have handled BW much better in both Captain America films

I mean...I'm still not convinced that a Black Widow film is interesting. I just can't see why make it unless they make the character radically more interesting

They really missed an opportuity to make a SHIELD film with Widow as the lead, Hawkeye as co star, Fury, Hill, Agent 13 as supporting.

After the bizarre Natasha/Bruce relationship played out like bad fanfic in AOU, I wouldn't want Whedon anywhere near Black Widow. Let him pull that **** with his own characters.

The length and style of Natasha's hair is abolutely meaningless. It's the subtance of her personality that matters, and Whedon just does not understand her.

I liked Whedon's take on Widow in the first Avengers movie. She was a strong character that out tricked the trickster god in Loki, and showed real vulnerability at the same time. His misstep with her in AOU doesn't change that.

Lol Joss gave us a good jumping off point for the character in A1 so I would be down for him doing a BW film. If I had to choose between him or the Russo bros....I would probably choose the Russos but if they don't get to do it, I would totally love for Whedon to do it. He has more hits then misses for me.

Some think Margarita Levieva, Sebastian Stan's real-life girlfriend, should play Yelena Belova.

She's actually Russian, so why not? (I've never seen her in anything, but she's been a regular on non-soap TV series stuff for a while, so she's likely dependable.)

(I really like ScarJo as BW, but she DEFINITELY does not look Russian. :funny: )
