Scarlett Johansson and Lindsay Lohan are about to have something in common.
Scarlett, I am told, has signed a deal to make her first record. "Scarlett Sings Tom Waits" is being recorded now and through the winter, with a possible release next spring from Rhino Records' recently reactivated Atco label. The eventual release date will be coordinated with Johansson's movie schedule.
Fear not, though. Unlike some other recent pop tarts, Scarlett — who turns 22 next month — can actually sing; she is no Paris Hilton. Also her choice of material is a tad more sophisticated. She's making a whole album of songs by Tom Waits, one of the premier singer-songwriters in the business.
Let's just hope the whole thing won't get "lost in translation." But my spies say that Scarlett has a lovely, whispery delivery that carries a tune nicely and is suited to Waits' unusual lyrics. No word yet on the producer, but she'd be smart to listen to Rikki Lee Jones' fine 1993 album, "Traffic in Paradise," for inspiration.

Is this just the beginning of more young actresses jumping into the diva pool? It's not like Paris Hilton is going to one-up Scarlett by doing a tribute to Leonard Cohen, but more reasonable ideas could include: Gwyneth Paltrow, who performs admirably in the new movie "Infamous"; Liv Tyler, who has the genes from parents Bebe Buell and Steven Tyler; and Nicole Kidman, who did have a hit in England with Robbie Williams.
And don't count out Lindsay. Her days with Tommy Mottola may be over, but she's only 19. A comeback is still possible.

I might buy it just for the pictures.

...(well, at least she shows good taste in who she's choosing to cover)

Jesus, etu Scarlet? Etu!?! :cmad:
Jeez if your going to rip off Shakespear, do it right! It's Et tu, and you. Latin, but identical to French.

Did you mean Shakespeare? At least have some respect and spell his name right! :oldrazz:

There's all kinds of foot-in-ass going on in here!

Damn, I wonder what actress will come out with an album next? Hopefully it'll be good, because being hot doesn't mean you can sing.

She should do a cover of "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia"!!

How the hell does she expect to cover Tom Waits? He's one of the most verstatile singers out there, with a very distinct voice.

I love Scarlett, but what the hell is she thinking...

Tom Waits??? Why would she even bother doing Tom Waits songs? They're perfect the way he sings them, there's no need to cover them. I wonder how he feels about this. This is worse than the time Rod Stewart covered "Downtown Train". :down

agreed.:down:down:down:cmad:

the point of a cover song is not to improve upon the original. or to mimic the sound/style of the original.

actually the second one IS the point of a cover song, if you want to nitpick. most of what people these days call "covers" are actually versions or renditions.

at least that's what my cranky guitar teacher used to grump about.

i guess i'm a purist, but when a great artist creates great works of art, i don't like seeing anyone mess with the legacies of those works of art.

I think of all the names mentioned here, Gwyneth Paltrow might be the only one who could put an album out if she wanted, she can actually sing.

Funny fact, there's actually a video on YouTube with her singing the chorus to Jay-Z's Song Cry.

I dun think so at all. Maybe there's a technical definition I dun know of, but even then, if most people call singing someone else's lyrics a cover, I mean, what do you do about that? yknow?
