CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A former North Carolina school secretary, fired for speaking Spanish in violation of the school's no-Spanish rule, has sued the school district, records show.

Ana Ligia Mateo, said she was hired in 2006 as a bilingual secretary for Devonshire Elementary School in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district, in which almost 16 percent of the students are Latino, the Charlotte Observer reported Sunday.

Mateo's lawsuit, originally filed in a state court, has been moved to a federal venue, the Observer reported.

When Suzanne Gimenez took over as principal in 2008, she found Mateo speaking Spanish on several occasions to parents on the phone or in person, and warned her to stop, the Observer said.

"During September 2008, a Spanish-speaking parent came to the school crying and stating in Spanish that someone at the school had placed a stick in her 7-year-old son's buttocks. Mateo asked Ms. Gimenez if she could translate for the parent," the suit said. "Ms. Gimenez refused and told the parent her 7-year-old son could translate. The parent continued to cry and eventually left without having her issue resolved because she could not understand Ms. Gimenez's responses."

The complaint further alleges that after an encounter with another upset parent who could not speak English, Gimenez "screamed at (Mateo) that she could not speak Spanish to any parents."

Mateo she was told she must agree to the no-Spanish policy in writing to keep her job, and was told she would not be transferred to another school, the suit alleges.

Mateo was "effectively terminated" on Sept. 24, 2008, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, unable to resolve the issue through "conciliation," referred the case to the U.S. Justice Department, the newspaper said.

Ahhh... Sounds like the schools back home. I feel more comfortable now.

What is the reasoning behind that policy??? They're only allowed to speak America's "official" language? :whatever:

In case anybody here is interested, the United States doesn't HAVE an official language.

Agreed. 100%.

So true. After all this country was built and meant for immigration and freedom. So this is just ********.

I wouldn't mind as much if America had some form of official language. Though, do STATES have official languages? Because that might set the bar for this.

Isn't the principal at least part Hispanic? Gimenez? Someone hates their heritage.

....and she was fired for using one of her job qualifications...

this is just ******ed. There is no logical rhyme or reason to the policy and her getting fired. I hope she wins big.

As Ricky Ricardo would say, "I am con-fuse-ed!"

What would be the point of having an official language?

It has generally been known to streamline and improve education standards, levels, and work efficiency.

Also, it stopped China from completely obliterating itself in ancient times.

Also, tends to generate unity amongst a population.

I don't see how. An English-only policy certainly didn't improve the school's services in this case, and resulted in the firing of what should have been a valued employee.

Okay.

People who are born in this country tend to learn English anyway, so I don't see any reason to enshrine English as an official language. I think the problem with Spanish is that there are continuous waves of immigration, so after one generation learns English a new generation speaking only Spanish appears.

Generally, if there were an official language, there wouldn't have been a problem with the teacher, as there would be no NEED for a bilingual teacher. Or money used in a bilingual program, freeing up money for other academic venues.

Though, to be perfectly fair, the principal is just dumb. Enforcing a teacher aimed at helping educate those who speak Spanish to speak English to those who speak Spanish is just dumb.

And there are plenty of people in America who are born here, and don't learn English. Maybe in places like Maine, Vermont, and Washington this isn't such a problem. But states with high impact immigration don't make out as well. In places like New Mexico, plenty of people are raised here, and don't speak English at all, which forces the state to distribute competency exams in multiple langauges and such which generally works AGAINST the state, since education is uneven, wasting time, and creating longer periods of time to usually get things done. This also applies to legislation. Also, it tends to make several areas of it's primary city, Albuquerque, unfavorable to it's wealthier, English speaking, social class. These places are generally also known to house illegal immigrants, where the cops can't just go in and say, "You don't speak English, lemme see the greencard." (Mainly as they wouldn't understand, have to be arrested, taken to the police precinct to find a translator, and then clear it all up. This tends to create the whole "Cops are racist" problem in Albuquerque, and New Mexico in general. In France, they can legal check someone if they cannot respond to French authorities IN French.) When English speaking only people go to a place like Target or Walmart, and find the majority of floor workers can't speak English, it tends to create problems amongst customers, who don't feel they're being taken care of, because they speak English, and Spanish speakers do not.

To quote a wise man: "If English was good enough for Jesus, it should be good enough for you."

:D

No mine is from some border patrol guy or something. I just love the stupidity of it.

Good lord, I hope the secretary wins this. The principal let her own xenophobic attitudes cloud her judgement. If a parent is complaining about something terrible that happened to her child at the school, and the parent only speaks Spanish, then you allow the school's bilingual secretary to translate! I don't care if you've got a rule that prevents employees from speaking Spanish in casual conversation together; it's a stupid business practice to prohibit the translation of important matters between management and the clientele.

I agree that immigrants who come to this country need to learn English, and that English should be made into the official language.

I also believe that there is no reason why this woman should have been fired. While I believe in learning English, and making it an official language, non-English languages shouldn't be outlawed. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Chalk another one up for the south. :whatever:
