School secretary axed for speaking Spanish

The Mexicans are just taking their land back and then some. Native Americans everywhere start believing in karma.

It's a conspiracy! Hispanics are trying to outpopulate the English speaking population in a bid to control America! >=O

It's the dreaded Yellow Peril all over again! Only now it's brown! :wow:

I'm not saying we need everyone to speak perfect textbook English, but it shouldn't be easy to get along without having some sort of knowledge regarding the language

I know some states only offer drivers license tests/exams in English

Yeah, instead of making the tests actually test whether or not you should drive, they make stupid little statements about the language.:whatever:

well considering most, if not all road signs are posted in English, and (depending on your area) if you get pulled over, the officer might not speak another language...it would be difficult

what is wrong with asking for someone moving or immigrating to another country to have some sort of grasp on the dominant/native language

Im sure if a ton of English speakers immigrated to Germany and we tried to get Germany to adjust to us, we'd probably get laughed at.....then gassed

Our road signs are in English. You shouldn't be driving if you cannot read the language.

I don't know. But someone who doesn't understand the native language, official or not, should not be allowed to drive in that country. It is a danger to themselves and other people.

EDIT: There is a thing such as an International Drivers Permit which can be obtained through AAA
http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpc.html

Here's some info about the US's rules regarding foreign visitors driving
http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Foreign_Visitors_Driving.shtml

Here's a Wikipedia article on it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Driving_Permit

This is still not the same as obtaining a license in the country which I imagine requires one knows the native/dominant language.

As an immigrant I'd like to offer my 2 cents to this. English was something I and my parents had to learn for either school, work, understanding tv, the signs on the subway. If you go to a foreign country and not learn the native languange that is incredibly selfish, idiotic, and just strange.

I'm sure not everyone will agree but really when you move someplace else and most of the population speaks a different languange I think it's common sence to learn it.

:up: (I would give better praise but that I had more thumbs - Socrates)

Do they have the same rules for english speaking people in other countries?

depends on the country....when I was in the USN and stationed in Japan, we had a couple guys who got DLs, one of whom got into a really bad accident a week after getting it

to be fair, a lot of other countries don't have the immigration situation that we have

I love the "immigration situation" stuff, always makes me :awesome:

Um no. Road signs are designed in an almost universal matter. That's why a stop sign is the same shape and color in almost every country.

I meant it in a very complimentary way, if you can name me another country that has thousands entering illegally and people that wait years to immigrate to, Id love to know about it

there are some other countries seeing jumps in immigration that haven't seen any notable increases in years...Japan, for some reason, is seeing a large jump in Brazilian immigrants

Way to generalize. Everyone's situation is different. Lets be completely honest here, most of these immigrants want to learn English. Most of them need to learn English to continue working and making their lives better. It's not like they're sitting around saying "I refuse to learn English just to piss off the gringos!" Which is what most of you seem to believe. That their "refusal" to learn English is just to spite America. Which in itself is ridiculous, paranoid and foolish IMO.

You mean like when the Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower?

but there are people like that....who refuse to learn English, Im related to two of them...it may be a small majority, but it still is silly IMO

And I would agree. But you said it, they are a minority in that respect. You guys act like everyone refuses to learn English.

There are words on signs.

Why are you so defensive on this subject, BTW?

Being in a situation where I interact with migrant laborers weekly, I'd say you underestimate the number that refuse to learn English.
