Scientology revs up to join NASCAR circuit

Don’t be surprised if Tom Cruise becomes a NASCAR fan. Scientology is getting into the wildly popular race sport.

“Dianetics,” the book written by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, is sponsoring a racing team — dubbed “Ignite Your Potential” — that will tour the NASCAR circuit. A Dianetics Racing Web site is being set up for fans.

Driver Kenton Gray credits Hubbard’s work with making him a good driver. “It’s markedly improved my focus and my consistency,” he said in an announcement from Hubbard’s publisher. “Through ‘Dianetics’ I’ve handled stress and increased my performance and ability to compete—both on the track and in life.”

“Scientology makes a point of recruiting celebrities as a part of it’s marketing appeal,” says a source. “If this is another marketing appeal — reaching out to the NASCAR crowd — it’s brilliant.”

“We’re not out selling a product,” Grant Cardone, the CEO of Freedom Motorsports, the company behind the car, told The Scoop. But he says, he too, is a fan of “Dianetics,” and if the Ignite Your Potential car helps troubled people, “that would be great.”

Who cares? If you're so weak-willed that you will blindly follow some celeberity into his bull**** religion, you should seriously reconsider what you've done in your life. Then end it.

I thought it was a somewhat funny story, so I posted it.

I really don't get into NASCAR. I realize some people find it entertaining, but I find it rather droll. It's a bit too redneck trash for me.

hehe, umm...I think Scientologists are targeting the wrong audience demographic :-/

NO WAI!

My comment wasn't directed to you personally, Man-Thing. Just the amount of people who will follow this simply because their favourite celeberity will.

NASCAR fans make a big deal out of it...

Which is sort of the underlying concern about the American populace, Drak. They've been trained, starting almost from birth, to be obedient, unquestioning little sheep who should follow the Cult Of Personality. It's really scary how many people do exactly that, too.

Exactly my point. I know that it's a sad truth, but I wish people would think more for themselves. It'd make manipulating them a lot harder.

There is a punishment and reward system that teaches people not to think for themselves. It starts in the public schools where kids are taught to absorb and regurgitate whatever they are told without question. If they don't comply, they get really bad grades or are even forced to take the same classes over again until they get it right. Much of the workplace is similar. College is one of the last bastions of free thinking left, and even then it depends on what your area of study is. Way back when I was a marketing major, the business school at the University I attended was entrenched in making students learn what they were told so that they could spout it off in rote. When I escaped to the Communication department, I discovered professors that actually punished people who DIDN'T think for themselves, which was refreshing as Hell (and made me a favorite with some of my prof's since I've had a tendency to question everything since I was a kid, much to the chagrin of most of my teachers growing up). The government has contributed to this as well, and on the whole, it is MUCH easier to just go with the status quo and not question anything than it is to go against it.

Hmm, Nascar. Primary audience demographic is white southerners. Bastion of prosestantism, with fundementalism rampant. Let's preach to them about our space aliens souls coming to Earth in DC-8s and inhabiting us. There going to want to hear abou this.

I know. I'm kinda being punished for free thought myself, at the moment. I was just recently fired from my job, for reasons of "theft". What did I do? I voided late fees and gave credits for free movies. These actions were all taken in stride of the "Best Guest Experience" promise Hollywood Entertainment has. Someone comes in with a "These were due back two days ago, but I was out of town. My son died, and we had to go to the funeral.", they shouldn't have to deal with that late fee. Or if someone rents a movie that's too scratched for a DVD player to read, they deserve a movie for what they paid for, right? So giving them a credit for what they rightfully paid for sounds legit, right? Well, apparently, it's not, despite the fact that I was trained that it is, and that since I'm the one running the shift, that these kind of things are MY decision.

You got fired for that? That's bullsh1t. I'd be making a call to corporate Human Resources if I were you.

Good man. Fight the power. You've got an extra card to play with the handicapped factor if you so decide to go that route as well. I'd stick it to those corporate a-holes any way I could, especially since they don't walk their talk. :)
