Scorsese hints at De Niro mafia pic

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio tried to keep the focus on "Shutter Island," but the assembled press weren't always on the same page at Saturday's news conference at the Hyatt.

One man made a plea for Scorsese to help actor Nick Nolte, who has fallen from Hollywood's graces in recent years, while a Spanish filmmaker pitched himself to DiCaprio, saying he wanted to give him his card.

Other questions that seemed to annoy the moderator included one from a lady who asked DiCaprio to say something in German (the actor does speak some in the movie). And one reporter from Kurdish TV asked, "When are you going to make your next big Mafioso film, something like 'Goodfellas 2'?"

After initially laughing off the query, Scorsese said he had nothing more to add to the genre before revealing that he and Robert De Niro were talking about "something that has to do with that world. No doubt about it. But it's from the vantage point of older men looking back."

The panelists, which also included actors Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams and Ben Kingsley as well as producers Brad Fischer, Mike Medavoy and Arnold Messer, did manage to keep a good chunk of the presser on point, for example tackling the movie's theme of fear and paranoia, and how it related to the 1950s setting.

The movie is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane and Scorsese and DiCaprio said that, while they did read the book, it was the script that first got their attention.

"To be honest, it was the emotional impact I had reading the last two scenes (that got me hooked)," Scorsese said.

Actors like Williams and Ruffalo, however, said they looked to the book for a deeper understanding of their characters, trying to find nuggets that helped with the psychology of the roles.

"It does some of the work for you," Williams said.

I Heard you Paint Houses, perhaps?

Their have been rumblings of them re-teaming for that one for the last half-decade. Personally, much as I love Scorsese's mob classics - I'm much more interested in seeing him finally tackle Silence. The Invention of Hugo Cabinet sounded interesting as well.

Unlike a lot of aging directors Scorsese shows no sign of 'losing it', and is still in my opinion, at the top of his game. The Departed was pure enterntainment and Shutter Island has been described as "the work of a master" so no matter what he does next I'm on board all the way.

By the grace of the universe I hope he lives long enough to make all of these movies. His planned Sinatra biopic, is also a permanent member of my "must see" list.

If there is ONE director alive today who could let the fire in DeNiro re-emerge, it's Martin Scorsese.

One part of me thinks that he's done enough mob movies (Now he's done horror and he's off to make a ''kid's movie'', I like to see the master tackle new genres) but the other part knows no-one does it as brilliantly as Scorsese. So yeah, I'll wait and see what comes of this.

during an interview with spiegel.de, dicaprio told that de niro and scorsese have plans for three movies, one of the movies includes him. damn..this sounds amazing. di caprio, de niro and scorsese, there's only pacino and pesci missing.

A movie with both DiCaprio and DeNiro would be awesome. And come to think of it, it's strange that Scorsese has never worked with Pacino.

Meh! Al Pacino was always pretty overrated to me. Dog Day Afternoon and Carlito's Way were ok, but Scent of a Woman and Scarface are some of the most overrated movies of all time.

His performace is great in Scent of a Woman. Sure he likes the put more emphasis in his acting now but nevertheless I'd love it if he'd work with Scorsese.

I think Scorsese has done enough mob movies. The Departed was the perfect way to end his string of them. But if it sounds good, you can count me in.

i respect the opinion of other people, but al pacino is one of the greatest actors of all time and scarface and scent of a women are great movies.

I bet it will be a romantic comedy!

Scent of the Woman I'll give ya, but Scarface is horrible in every way imaginable. It is so over-the-top and melodramatic with out an ounce of charisma to balance it out.

When I look back at Pacino's career it is amazing to me that he can be considered so great. Godfather I and II is truly the only thing that can put him in the running with the rest of the greats. Everything else is either just ok or so incredibly hammy.

I think the over the top nature of Scarface is intentional. You can't expect a story like that and not expect something that's out there. Maybe it could have went in a more serious route, but for what it was, I liked it.

Why not? What is it about a drug dealer who grows into an organized crimeboss that is so over-the-top.

That Sinatra flick will be as close as he gets to doing another mafioso genre I think. Frankie was in pretty good with dem boys the way you hear it.

if its on Jimmy Hoffa ill definitely watch that

I loathe Scarface. I really do. I could not agree more with what you said. But do not put down Pacino as an actor because of it. You need to watch Dog Day Afternoon, now that is some powerhouse acting by Pacino that will make you fully realize why he is considered one of the greats. And if you have already seen it, and have formed your negative opinion despite of it you are an idiot. ;)

And damn, I look forward to whatever Scorsese's making. Hugo Cabret, Silence, The Irishman; there is no doubt I will go and see all of 'em.

I corrected myself in the sentence after. It could have taken a more serious tone, but it doesn't bother me.

Casino didn't do much for me. But I look forward to this one. The idea sounds interesting.

Anything Pacino did after the 70's = :down

Whoa, Heat? Scent of a Woman? Carlito's Way? Donny Brasco?

I didn't mean the movies he was in, just his performances. I think him and Kevin Costner are my most loathed actors.

Well, at least Pacino has turned out better performances in the past than anything Costner has done. I'd rather watch Pacino shouting than Costner in anything.
