LOVE THAT. I've already contacted the editor to see if he knows where to get one.

I liked that new trailer alot. I'm interested.

Has anyone seen this yet? It's on the Playstation network right now for an early "screening"
I'm downloading it tonight!

I saw it On Demand last night.

It was...suffice to say...a little meh.

I watched it too, today. I must say I was surprised how much I liked the film. Journey through a forbidden area, lovecraftian tentacle monsters, war-like situation. I enjoyed it.

Dialogue needed some work though, and the very ending (like the last 30 seconds/1 minute or so). It was done badly, and rushed.

3.5 / 5

Monsters. Don’t let the name fool you, this film doesn’t center on the alien creatures or its conflict with the military. This is a film that centers on two individuals and their trek across the border from Mexico to the US. The background story is simple. One of our probes collects samples and returns to Earth only to crash close to the US/Mexican border…not too long after the entire border (and extending deeper into both countries) is quarantined and labeled an infected zone. Turns out those samples were not mere mineral samples but alien eggs that hatched and grew quickly into 10 story tall creatures. But again, don’t let the name fool you as these creatures are not hell bent on taking over earth. They are another planets version of bears or wolves. They are creatures, nothing more.

This is what serves as a backdrop to the meat of the film which is the journey of two people. A reporter who has to babysit the bosses daughter, however due to some entertaining circumstances they are stuck taking the land route across the border to the US. It’s here where the film really begins.

The environments are beautiful, the lush and flourishing jungle serves as a great stage piece for suspense. It certainly helps that it’s a real jungle, filmed on location. Don’t expect to see the creatures often during this film. Much of the cinematography relies on what you can’t see…only what you can hear and see the effects of what the creatures are doing. This adds a great element to the film, suspense. Not scare factor. In many scenes you will find yourself thinking that something is going to happen at any moment, a sound of a creature in the background builds up the suspense, nothing happens and the characters move on. It may not sound suspenseful when written out…but it’s very successful at creating tension. Because as it just so happens, the next scene you are expecting the same thing the creature actually appears. It’s done in a very convincing style.

It’s good to see a film that strays somewhat from the Hollywood norm. It’s apparent the director was influenced from the likes of Jurassic Park and in a few scenes it does bring back memories of that film. But this film can stand alone without needless comparison. It’s an enjoyable film, especially to watch with others.

Overall, this film moves at steady, yet slow pace, allowing the tension to simmer as it moves towards each new awe-inspiring suspenseful moment. But it’s done in a way that makes you never want to take your eyes off the screen. The characters act in convincing and believable ways to help push the idea that this is a very dangerous place to be. I give it an 8/10.

I seriously ****ing love the ending moments of Monsters.

it is on demand just saw it on the list

did;t even know it would be there

demand also has Howl/Mother/ and some other films as well

It's a shame this film hasn't had more exposure than it has. While it isn't going to set cinema on fire, it's a nicely directed and acted movie from an up-and-comer with great potential. Any movie featuring monsters (titled as one no less) will have expectations of horror and blockbuster action, so the audience will be small for those that actually realize what the story is.

I do wish the more big-budgeted sci-fi films would incorporate more of the themes found in this film. The inclusion of the whole border control/alienation/foreign affairs structure was a pleasant surprise. Setting it in Mexico just made it funnier. Comparisons to District 9 would be fair. It's a lot more about the people than it is the invasion or the extraterrestrials. Locations are real and the extras complement the scenery rather than serving as plot points. That alone makes it a more personal experience for the viewers, but admittedly I did long for the spectacle at certain points where it should have built up.

Those who catch the relevance of the opening intro will appreciate the movie a bit more, I presume. Friends I saw it with merely thought it was ok until they realized what went on. Very nice touch, and I must say it was the best directed part of the movie.

Huh. I might have to check this one out. It looks like one of those movies that you either really love or really hate.

Would anyone say this movie is worth a blind buy? Its out here on BD next and I want to buy it but have heard mixed things about it.

It was pretty good, but more of a rental for me. I can't really imagine going back to watch it again unless it's with a friend who hasn't seen it yet.

Hhhmmm, still undecided then, but it comes out on Monday so I'd better hurry up and decide!
