Well, the Legends had "Mortal Khan-bat," so why not Supergirl? This was supposed to be the penultimate episode as mentioned below, but this is, in fact, the season finale:

DAVID HAREWOOD DIRECTED THIS PENULTIMATE EPISODE – Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) realizes that in order to stop Lex (guest star Jon Cryer) and Leviathan she must work with the one person she never thought she’d trust again – Lena (Katie McGrath). Nia (Nicole Maines) keeps dreaming about Brainy (Jesse Rath) but struggles with what the dreams are trying to tell her. Meanwhile, Brainy realizes there is only one way to stop Lex. David Harewood directed the episode with story by Derek Simon and teleplay by Emilio Ortego Aldrich & Nicki Holcomb (#519). Original airdate 5/17/2020.

A couple of articles from an interview with Chyler. Alex is going masked vigilante in this episode.
Supergirl's Chyler Leigh Is Suiting Up for the Season 5 Finale: 'You Do Not Know What's Coming' | TV Guide

Lena working with the superfriends, it isn’t smooth sailing.

"It's almost, in a sense, kind of tables being turned," Leigh said, "because it was everybody else trying to reconcile with her, but for her to have to come back very, very humbled and in a position of weakness is not something that she is used to doing...”
Supergirl's Chyler Leigh Says 'A Lot of Rebuilding' Needs to Happen with Lena | TV Guide

I’m happy they intention is not to just have the characters forget what’s happened between them. I’ll be interested to see how this is executed.

Honestly, that worked well enough as a finale for me. Obviously there's still a threat to tie up, but I'm glad the Obsidian plot and Lena/Kara plot basically got their solid resolutions this ep.

But if I'm being honest, I lost interest in the Brainy subplot and wasn't really paying attention to whatever the hell he was doing on that ship, so I was not prepared for this to be a "death scene" scenario, but I guess that's my fault, lol. If they actually kill Brainy and keep the absolute dead weight that is William, I will be annoyed. Hopefully Brainy's not going anywhere.

But yeah, considering the circumstances, I was pleasantly surprised by this episode.

Great season finale due to the pandemic.

I can see Supergirl's team expanding with Lena Luthor and Andrea Rojas.

I'd say Brainiac 5 was the MVP for the 2nd half of the season post-Crisis.

I now Alex was basing her persona from her virtual reality persona, but she looks like a female Nightwing.

Pretty solid finale. Hallelujah the Kara-Lena soap opera drama seems to be done!

Totally side eyeing Alex having a suit. *shrug*

Am I the only one sorta hoping for a tease/Easter egg for the Superman & Lois show? For some reason, I kept looking for one especially during Brainy’s scenes. I suppose if they had one it would’ve been on the actual finale and not the pandemic one. Oh well...

Yeah, I think if they were gonna do that, it would be in the actual planned finale, which they mostly finished filming, so we'll probably see it as the (slightly tweaked) S6 premiere. Though since Superman & Lois will have already aired by the time we see that now, they might remove any Easter eggs/setup they would've had. :(

I know this episode was compromised due to the pandemic but it really just summed up how poor this season has been for me. The Leviathan plot has been terribly underdeveloped and then it just sort of escalated.

Then there’s Alex’s vigilante outfit, is that seriously the beet they could come up? The idea is horrible anyway but the bad suit just makes it even worse.

Also what’s with the god down U-turns in this show? Lena, Miss Tessmacher etc. Heck even Kara at the end, it was like oh all is forgiven. What??

It was nice to get plenty of Supergirl though but really the only part of this episode I was into were Alex’s scenes again, when he’s done in this show I’m done with it as well except for crossovers and/or a drastic improvement next season.

Yeah, I was pleased with this episode. One of the handful of episodes this season I thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunate we have to wait so long to see everything here resolved, but not bad for a finale.

Alex becoming a vigilante is definitely a little silly, but the CW shows always need every character on "Team (fill in the blank) to be some sort of hero.

It was decent. The Leviathan were taken down um....very badly. I needed way more action and destruction then what we got.

I hate it when they have Kara give pep talks to save the day so that is always an eyeroll.

I love Brainys new look and they need to start having him in his actual alien get up more! That's the points of aliens! Especially when National City is supposed to embrace them and all of them choose to hide behind a mask 99% of the time.

Alex and her new suit.....the suit itself I dont hate but...the eye makeup? That is a choice. A major choice. Give her a mask and call it a day, and get rid of the hood.

The J'onn/M'gann parading around as Kara was a very funny scene.

Definitely better than the Flash finale. This actually felt like a finale of sorts.

Glad to see Kara seems to have made up with Lena. And Lena was defending Kara when she was in the virtual reality when she could easily have let Andrea kill her.

I was thinking that Kara and Chyler don't know that Eve killed Jeremiah. At the moment they're all very understanding that her mother was threatened. But what happens when they find out what she did?

The acting between Melissa and Katie was great in this episode, especially Kara conveying how hurt she had been after the way Lena responded, and then Lena realising that she had gone overboard.

Also it was cool that Lena was the one to talk Andrea down, given that she was the one who betrayed her. This was happening at the same time that she was trying to protect Kara, whom Lena felt had betrayed her too.

I thought it was an alright episode. Right off the bat though, why didn't J'onn just carry Kara to Lena's lab? Pick her up, fly her over the city and Rama has no idea she's on the move.I know the doppleganger thing was supposed to be funny and set up some action, but it fell flat for me. And why do these experienced heroes keep thinking the bad guy is down just because they were hit once?

And though I liked Kara's reaction to Alex's suit reveal, why does she look like the Arrow now? Gotta say I'm not a fan of what they came up with. And yeah, the eye make-up..? No. She looks like a reject from an 80's music video. Damn I miss the look of season 1-2 Alex...

Supergirl talking through the problem, as in pep-talking people, is supposed to be her strong suit. And when done right it really works. This one was alright. I did like how they showed her talking to everyone in VR, as though they were all orbiting the Earth.

I am glad Lena and Kara are starting to put this behind them now. They need to come out stronger in the end because of it, and Lena standing up to Andrea was good. The problem with that scene though was sending a flawed assassin to do the job. Are they telling us that millennia-spanning Leviathan didn't have another cold-blooded killer to send against Supergirl than a woman who, in this post Crisis, has never killed anybody and could be easily swayed..? Gemma couldn't have gone to take care of the problem herself?

That at least would have given us a real dramatic scene, especially if Kara had come out of VR while Lena was getting her ass handed to herself while trying to protect Kara.

And yes, this weeks MVP is Brainy. He made a suicide play to try and save his friends and stop the bad guys, while everyone was thinking that they couldn't trust him anymore. Plus, he looks a lot better in his alien garb. After this, he should be in costume 100% now.

I thought it was an ok episode. Ok as a season finale, I guess.

Gemma is still around and whoever she works for. So, I assume that was supposed to have a more proper ending if the season was complete. Probably switching over to Lex and his mom for next season or something like that.

Not feeling the lack of a mask for Alex.

I just finished binging through this season and hadnt realized that this would be the final episode of the season. Ended so abrupt without wrapping up the show's main plot. I thought filming would have been done before COVID shut things down. So with this as the season finale, Im guessing they will finish up this season next season ala Sailor Moon?

I haven't seen Sailor Moon so I can't compare, but presumably, yes, they'll tie up the remaining dangling loose ends as they kick off next season.

The first 5 episodes of the final season pretty much wrapped up the previous season. After that happened the new season proceeded with a brand new plotline and set of characters. It was jarring. I dont know if Supergirl will do it like that or if the stuff from this season will just be worked into whatever story they have planned for the next

I’m guessing you don’t watch other Vancouver based CW shows. None of the shows finished their season plots before the COVID-19 shutdown, they all ended abruptly. Supergirl was three days short of finishing episode 20, which would’ve been the season finale. Flash, Riverdale, and Charmed were filming episodes 20 out of 22 so like Supergirl only finished 19. All of them will have to finish the prior seasons plot before moving on. In that respect Supergirl is in a better position than the other’s because it ended one instead of three episodes short of what was planned. Flash is in a particularly tough spot because of Hartley Sawyer’s firing.

Well, as Brierrose said, they were only stopped 1 episode short, so I don't think they'd need more than an episode to wrap up the Lex/Lillian/Leviathan thing and kick off their plot for S6. It was nice that they were able to resolve both the Lena situation and the Leviathan/Obsidian plot in the penultimate-turned-finale episode, so they really only have one plotline to tie up in the premiere.
