After coming off the cinematic quality of Superman and Lois, Supergirl feels like a downgrade.

How long will it be before Lex finds out about Captain Luthor?

It was a small thing but Melissa acted the hell outta that moment right before Lex fired the projector. Like, I genuinely got the feeling all that trauma from her first time in the Phantom Zone came rushing back in an instant.

Does it trigger anyone else how so many people pronounce it as Luther instead of Luthor? :o

The pronunciation doesn't bother me so much as the spelling. Like, I've heard it pronounced both ways regularly, so I accept both as valid (much like the two pronunciations of "Kara" in different media). But I CONSTANTLY see it spelled as "Luther," and that really drives me up the wall. :funny:

Well, we actually got a promo for episode 2. I'm surprised. Which just makes their treatment of Black Lightning look even dirtier.

    General thoughts:

I mean yeah, this was the S5 finale. I don't even think it was "remixed" as a premiere like I had predicted. As a finale, it was....not their worst? Probably better than S1 and S3's, but that's about it. This show has never been good at finales. Jesse Warn is my favorite director on the show because he handles the emotional stuff SO well, but his one vice that I hate is his awkward musical sequences and welp, he just couldn't resist here yet again, unfortunately. And as we all know, they really don't have the budget to pull off half the stuff they attempt, and this episode's a prime example of that. BUT that stuff aside, I really did like a lot of the character moments (especially the ones between characters who rarely get to interact), and I also really liked the Martians basically saving the day for once. And I'm very intrigued by this upcoming storyline of Kara in the (magical hair-fixing) Phantom Zone.*

*which, by the way, the original premise of the show stated she was stuck in for 24 years, not the "almost 10" Kara stated here. Another Crisis retcon, or a case of the writers yet again forgetting their own timeline???

It makes you wonder how much more they could do if they were on HBO Max budget wise. It's still weird how stargirl is getting a bump down going to cw.

It was a better "finale" than The Flash that's for sure.

COIE didnt even happen that long ago and they are already trying to have COIE like events. Flash and SG are really going to milk COIE for everything it (isnt) worth, they throw the word around so much.

You'd think after 6 years that I wouldnt get so annoyed at the lack of J'onn or M'Gann in Martian form but I just cant help but get annoyed that they are in their human forms so much even when wearing their superhero outfits. They Martian up when they are in a full CGI scene in space but then go back to human mode after that. Show you can tone down some of your other CGI scenes that arent needed to give to them.

Brainy and Nia definitely have been a shining beacon and that continued tonight.

I like how Alex's "superhero" mode involves coloring parts of her hair as well lol. Still one of the weirdest outfit decisions they've made.

The Arrowverse seems to be falling apart, from no Superman mention in this episode (you guys are in his fortress and he has encountered the phantom zone) to no Kara mentions in S&L...of course this episode was a holdover but I dont think these two shows want to really acknowledge each other and they are supposed to be in the same universe lol.

Bigger budget is nice but Supergirls bigger problems involve the writing and trying to be too Super. Geoff said that Stargirl wont suffer by going to CW full time and that he works closely with the VFX studio to stay within their budget so they dont go to crazy.

I can't see a crossover between Superman & Lois and Supergirl happening.

The budget differences are definitely stark, and you can really see the difference.

And truthfully, I kept thinking about Clark, Lois, Jordan and Johnathan ,and wondering what they were up to, what Captain Luthor's next move was, etc. I really want to get back to that world and those storylines.

I'd pretty much forgotten where Supergirl had left off, given that 2020 was such a apocalyptic cluster of world events.

That said, It's always nice to see Supergirl and the gang, but it'll take me a awhile to get reacclimated to the Supergirl -verse.

I’ve been doing a Supergirl rewatch to prep for this season, so that made the difference less jarring, lol.

I know this was the finale, they should have kept it that way and just said it's 5x20, but it still felt a little weird to just get right into things. Couldn't help but realize how cringe some of the dialogue in this episode was "Dreamer, what did you dream?"

Not terrible for a finale though. I knew I should have rewatched the pseudo finale beforehand, I think that would have helped.

I only noticed two scenes they had to do after the shutdown last year - the hologram Supergirl scene and the actual fight with Lex. I'm sure there were more and I only noticed both of those because of Melissa's hair.

Like we suspected, Kara in the Phantom Zone. I wonder if that was the plan all along but either way I'm glad it's only a week wait until we see the fallout from that and not the typical 5 months or whatever.

I’m thinking it was the plan all along and the only thing that changed is it didn’t wind up as a cliffhanger. Independent of COVID Melissa would not have been able to come back from maternity leave before she actually did. She publicly announced her pregnancy before the shutdown and would’ve had to tell TPTB before that so a plan could be made ASAP.

That's what I'm guessing too. I'm glad it won't be a long wait after the cliffhanger now

There will be one eventually, though with Supergirl ending this season I suspect Kara will have the odd guest appearance in the Superman show.

Speaking of, I hope someone at least mentions that they've told Clark his cousin has been trapped in the phantom zone - again.

Exactly what does this have to do with Supergirl S6E1?

Why did the production look so cheap? I'm not talking about just in comparison to Superman and Lois but even to other Supergirl episodes. The CGI looked especially bad.

And why was Chyler wearing such ghastly makeup? Did she have that in the last episode last season?

How come Lex didn't try to use the anti life equation on Supergirl or even Superman to turn them evil?

It seemed normal to me. It was the finale so it was cgi heavy.

Then you did not see Flash S7E4. It is what it is.

Yes Alex wore the same eye makeup in S5E19 when she debuted her new suit, most of this episode was footage they shot last year so it’s literally how Alex looked in S5E19. The eye makeup is part of Alex’s vigilance persona which we saw J’onn name Sentinel. Oliver wore eye makeup before he started wearing a mask. The actor Chyler Leigh who plays Alex Danvers has an IRL love of dramatic eye makeup I’m fine with indulging her.

Because that’s not the storyline they’re using. Supergirl being in the Phantom Zone is one of the way’s they’re working in Melissa’s maternity leave. When she first returned she filmed scenes with Kara in the Phantom Zone separate from the rest of the cast. Those scenes will be cut into some of the episodes until the superfriends figure out how to get Kara back.

A minor goof in the grand scheme, I guess.

But I’m kinda curious how such a slip-up happens. A nerdy fan (like yourself :word:) spots this mistake immediately. So aren’t there nerdy fans on staff — either in the writers’ room or among the actors (who might be expected to know their character’s backstory)? Or what about script supervisors or the show’s “story bible”? “Ten years” in the PZ seems like an oddly specific number to cite. If I were writing it, my first thought would be “is that actually right?” Well, ask other writers or consult the “bible,” or — an easy cheat and edit — just refer to an unspecified number “years” in the PZ.

I like my Kara to be angry, petty, and cocky. I also have a soft spot for teen stories where teens get involved in high stakes situations. Young Kara's attitude in Midvale is the Kara I prefer and have wanted since early in the show.

Which is perfectly fine but de-aging Melissa's version of Kara is weird to me.
