Official Description:
THE FLASHBACK TO MIDVALE INTRODUCES A YOUNG CAT GRANT – Nia (Nicole Maines) and Brainy (Jesse Rath) attempt to save Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) from the Phantom Zone by time traveling back to Kara’s home in 2009. While determined to secure the item needed to help Supergirl, Brainy is worried about keeping a low profile so as not to alter the future timeline. However, when their ship crashes upon arrival, a young Kara Danvers (guest star Izabela Vidovic) is the first on the scene. Meanwhile, a young reporter named Cat Grant (guest star Eliza Helm) sets her sights on Midvale as she suspects there is a big story in the small town. Alexandra LaRoche directed the episode written by Rob Wright & Jess Kardos (#605). Original airdate 4/27/2021.

So she's STILL in the Phantom Zone.

They couldn't find someone who looked like Ally McBeal 25 years ago for young Cat Grant?

I thought Chyler directed this one but I guess she directed episode 6. Is Melissa going to be in this episode at all at least? I know she's not in the one Chyler directed.

So these Midvale episodes were filmed before Melissa came back from maternity leave and then the Midvale plot was incorporated into the main plot with the super friends?

Partially correct. These flashback episodes were filmed before Melissa came back but all episodes were written as a cohesive plot. They knew when Melissa would be out, the pandemic didn’t really change that.

I want t a Midvale spinoff now. I think this marks the first-time Melissa herself is absent.

It was one of the better episodes of the season. Dont know if that is a good thing or a bad thing lol.

The casting was A+, all of them looked like their adult counterparts. I hate connecting Cat to Kara in anyway before the S1 premiere so wasnt fan of the storyline, Arrow did the same thing with Oliver/Felicity and I hated that as well. But the actress was great.

It took them 6 seasons and a flashback to FINALLY give Kara a good love interest! Where has this guy been all of our lives? It's to bad that the actor is likely 5years younger than Melissa and we dont know how their chemistry could be because young kara + him were great, love them together.

It was fine. The Midvale episodes have a certain charm to them and young Kara and Alex are pretty great. Young Cat was not it though, lol.

The "Prom Night" title didn't make much sense either, but I'm not sure what they could have called it instead

Probably the best episode of the season so far, which is kind of saying a lot :funny:

I'm not sure how I feel about them wiping "Midvale" from the post-Crisis timeline, but I'm glad it means Kenny lived. Even if they did recast him. He and Kara are a cute couple.

Izabela and Olivia were yet again great as young Alex and Kara. "Young" Cat, not so much. I really wish they'd left her out completely, tbh.

Also not here for these goofy blue aliens. I wish this show would stop with the whole "face paint!" approach to aliens. They can't pull it off, lol.

It was a fun episode, but again, 2 episodes of this isn't really feeling justified, imo.

I dont know how J'onn is able to give back Pre-COIE memories but the guy cant even get up to date with post-COIE timeline. How do they not end up with both set of memories? It makes no sense. It was stupid then and stupid now.

Cat was so unnecessary, lol. The blue aliens felt so thrown in too just for some sort of "conflict"

This season isn't off to a great start, unfortunately. You know it's bad when this was probably the best episode so far..

Alex DID end up with both sets of memories. And J'onn has both sets of his own. It's not like he went around gathering everyone's new memories while restoring their old ones. J'onn didn't know HER post-Crisis early days because he didn't experience them like she did or ever learn of this particular memory until today. J'onn went back and gave people their pre-Crisis memories back - he had nothing to do with post-Crisis memories. That part makes total sense to me.

Alex having both of her memories is fine, they set it up that Non-Paragons had Post-COIE memories. I could be wrong since I hated COIE but I could've sworn that they set it up that Paragons werent given post-COIE memories. If they did, great.

Well I'm not about to rewatch it to double check lol, but I'm pretty sure they established that the Paragons were actually the only ones who naturally retained both. J'onn then went around giving the other relevant heroes their pre-Crisis memories, too.

It's the paragons who are the only ones who have memories of Pre-Crisis.

Blue aliens felt tucked in as they were unnecessary.

I'm glad this is a two-parter as this would feel like a Midvale movie or Supergirl: Being Super movie based on the comic storyline.

I'm assuming the "Kara not allowed to use her powers as a teen" thing was rewritten with Crisis too?

Btw, I don't know what broke them up (I imagine we may see that next ep), but as of now I'd be totally down for Kenny showing back up in present day National City before the end. He's the only love interest of Kara's that I would approve of her ending up with, lol.

I have a feeling that they reintroduced him for this very reason. Since he already knows her secret they dont have to go through that whole "im Supergirl"

If you just go with the goofy, Back to the Future redux aspect, I suppose the episode had a certain playful charm. But, structurally, it seemed a reminder that retrieving a sample of Kara’s DNA was the ultimate goal. This was mentioned in the very beginning; but it kinda got lost among all the plot obstacles that were set up. Also, I’m not sure that the blue guys were... strictly necessary. :ebr: The basic time travel scenario (with its dramatic stakes and standard dilemmas) was probably robust enough to carry the narrative. Plus, the character moments between young Alex and Kara were engaging. So no need to overdo things with an attack by aliens. Especially by campy aliens who’d be right at home next to Adam West and Burt Ward. But… maybe their presence will be justified in part 2...?

Finally: Hokey smoke does Vidovic look like Benoist! In some shots it’s uncanny. :wow:

This episode did not need Cat Grant in it. Though I did like her being mistaken for Lois Lane.

It’s my understanding that when J’onn whammied them he gave non paragons like Alex back their pre CoIE memories. How he did that I won’t get into. So yes, they have both pre and post CoIE memories. The exception would be Clark because J’onn can’t read Kryptonian minds. He said that is season one and in season three he could only get residual psychic energy off Kara after Psy attacked her. It’s the Paragons that didn’t/don’t know Earth-Prime history. I don’t recall anything about J’onn whamming himself and the other Paragons to remember the history of Earth-Prime.

Those blue aliens were pretty terrible. They seemed like they came from some other children's show.

Young Cat wasn't great either. Her eyes look off and that looks clearly like a wig. She seems more like Sigourney Weaver than Calista Flockhart.

I didn't feel that young Kara and Chyler were as good this time around as last time. Especially young Chyler. She seems different. Maybe because the older one has also changed since then.
