The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 8 "How It's Gotta Be" Discussion Thread

Wow. I didn't actually expect them to go through with this. [BLACKOUT]I would have thought Carl would survive to the end of the series, even moreso than Rick. Even though Carl is nowhere near one of my favorite characters, I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. It also could be a sign that they might be ending the show sooner rather than later.[/BLACKOUT]

I hope not to that last bit. :(

They aren't. AMC has already said they want to milk this cow till it is DRY lol. If anything this is just sending a message that anyone is expendable, even though the decision came from the actor lol.

Got to give him credit. He stepped up and held it down while saving a lot of lives in the mayhem.

On an unrelated note, this gif has never felt more timely.

Weird thing is, Carl was in one of Rick's flash-forward sequences in the season premiere, so maybe that's just a future that Rick was imagining and doesn't come to pass?

I think of that scene as a nod to the time jump. It's reminds of the scene with the entire group eating at the table in that "could've been" vision from 701.

To the readers of the comics:

Anyone think this "death" is another fakeout? That bite mark looks pretty darn clean. Could be a bite mark from one of the Whisperers?

The kid who plays Carl wanted to leave the show?

I look forward to seeing him in direct to video Horror movies from now on.

Mark from one of them? Nah, don't think so. Too soon, I think, to even hint at them. It's not impossible, granted, since we got a lot of hints about the Wolves well before we saw any of them, but as far as that group, it's too early.

Though I do think that there's something about the actual moment that doesn't make sense. Maybe something about it will come out later, like how Laurie Holden came out later and said that she didn't like how Andrea's storyline ended on the show. I tend to agree.

I was happy to see Andrea go. :(

I went to a spoiler site and this ending leaked months ago. Source said Chandler Riggs wanted out and it wasn't Gimple's decision. Interesting if true.

EDIT: Just read that interview with Riggs on THR. Sounds like this was all Gimple.

As is often the case with child actors, I could see him going to school and leaving Hollywood altogether. Or, he'll end up in the production side of things.

i'm a bit confused. what was Rick's plan exactly for dealing with the Saviors once he brought the horde upon them and what was Darryl's plan?

cause some folks say Rick must be angry at Darryl, but i'm wondering why

Reading that it wasn't his decision to leave makes me pissed off about killing him off and his comments on Reddit make more sense now as compared to when I was looking at them with the thought he chose to leave.

If Riggs didn’t even want to leave and this was all Gimple’s idea, then its inexcusable.

It’s not ballsy, it’s not edgy, it’s not daring, it’s just running the show into the ground for the hell of it.

I've been reading that Riggs was told that he was good for the next 3 years when he signed his new contract which is why he bought a house in GA and was planning on going to college there.

God I hope so, one of my favorite things in the comics is Negan and Carl's heart to hearts with Negan in jail, and how much stronger Carl has become than Rick. If this isn't a Whisperer bite, what the hell are they going to do to get one of the Whisperers on their side so they can learn about the Whisperers.

That is probably the #1 reason why I hope it's a fakeout. By doing this, they aren't just cutting one character's development and depth short ... They're cutting TWO characters short.

Absolutely. It reeks of desperation if it was Gimple's idea.

"The show is losing its audience. We gotta do something big. Let's kill off one of the big characters to get people's attention. Not Daryl though."

I don't see how killing off a major would boost ratings, if anything it can crash them when you kill off the wrong guy. :(

This show killing characters for shock value is nothing new. In fact more often than not it seems to be the primary and only motivator. Tyrese, Beth, I could go on. The only difference here is how big the character is relative to the rest of the cast, and how safe it was assumed he would be for the rest of the series.

The Sanctuary was pinned with walkers. Meaning Negan and co can't get out, and the other Saviors can't get in. Eventually they'd run out of food, and water. So, in doing so, they might decide to surrender, or turn against Negan. By driving the truck into the Sanctuary, Daryl put the plan entirely in the hands of the Saviors. I don't know if walkers can climb stairs, but at least inside, it's a fairly controlled environment. Maybe they were able to lead them out through another entrance?
