Seems that a situation is developing over at Smallville that I'd started to suspect for a while, since this current season didn't seem to be building toward any gigantic finale: it looks like there's going to indeed be a Season 9. The story's coming from various sources all over the web, but I first caught it at SyfyPortal, which got its stuff from Michael Ausiello of EW. According to Ausiello, responding to a question about the possibility, "Yes, there's news, and it's good. Some would even call it, ahem, super. According to a well- placed Smallville insider, Welling is nearing a deal to return for a ninth season. I'm told they're just ironing out some minor deal points, such as should the Brinks Truck pull into the actor's driveway, or just unload on the street."

OK, think about this for a moment: nine seasons of Smallville. That's longer than any Star Trek series by two years. That's going neck and neck with X-Files, which itself should have ended two years before it did. That's approaching the current genre record holder, Stargate: SG-1, and that show had to retool itself bigtime after Season 8. I'd been thinking that the last two seasons were going to be it, and have been incorrect both times. This effectively means that when all is said and done, Tom Welling will have played the Man of Steel longer than anyone, except for the iconic Christopher Reeve, who only dipped back into the role once every three or four years. George Reeves managed it for approximately seven years, depending on whom you ask. Of course his leaving the part was either voluntary or not, also depending on whom you ask.

So what exactly does this mean for Smallville? Welling knows what side his bread is buttered on, and at least seems savvy enough to realize that with only two Cheaper By The Dozen movies and a ****** Fog remake recently, the movies aren't exactly beating down his door. And as long as the ratings are up, or at least holding steady, the CW isn't in any hurry to have him go anywhere and he seems in no hurry to leave. Plus there's the ridiculous checks he's going to be cashing this upcoming season if (when) he re-signs. As for the show itself, Smallville started with the mantra of "no tights, no flights," but the guys who made that rule - Alfred Gough and Miles Millar - are gone. And Clark has effectively made the leap from the farm to the Planet. Plus the whole Clark/Lana/Lex love triangle albatross is also gone. The Superman theatrical franchise is still in the Phantom Zone as well. And with the Justice League now firmly established in the show's mythology and Justin Hartley a regular as Green Arrow, I see no reason that we couldn't actually see Clark finally get into the superlongjohns.

I think they should had ended it this season

Oh, for the love of Christ!!

I also think this season should have been the last regardless of the current quality. But, hey, I'll keep watching!

Thought it should have stopped a few seasons back, but I'll gladly see where the series goes from here. Especially if there are more DC characters introduced into the fold.

If they do a ninth season they should just put Clark in the costume, pretty much every element is there already, I think the only thing missing besides flights and tights is Perry White being in charge of the Daily Planet.

+ 1

But I'll likely skip the first half of next season and just wait for the final 8 episodes.

Why would he need the suit though, he doesn't have a secret identity. Or has something changed this season? I mean he'd have to wear a mask or something.

Why is this thread titled "Season 9 is a go" when there's been no formal announcement yet? It's WAY misleading. Granted, I believe there will be another season, but it's still speculation at this time. Also, there's a LOT of assumptions going on in that first post, particularly those involving what Welling "realizes," and what kind of offers may or may not be "beating down his door." Just sayin'.

clark doesn't like to wear masks so he might stay being the red and blue blur

How many people said that Smallville should have ended at the end of last season??? I was one of those people so I'm not criticizing but how wrong was I???

This season has been awesome and in my opinion has been one of the strongest seasons to date. We wouldn't have had this season if the show had ended at the end of last season like people (myself included) wanted.

Therefore I'm not going to jump on the wagon so quickly and suggest that 'the powers that be' are wrong to keep the show going for another season because if season 9 does go ahead and it's half as good as this season, I'll be very happy!

Oh boy, here we go again with the tights.... :whatever:

Is not going to happen because of Warner's stupid restrictions regarding superheroes, that's why they can't have Batman either on the show.

"Clark might not be able to appear in the Superman outfit in Smallville's final scene since it could conflict with the big-screen franchise, according to Swimmer."

Back on 2007, former producer Gough said the same:

Have you ever thought about Tom Welling donning the costume -- just to get an idea of "what if"?

No, it's actually in his contract that he won't wear the costume. (Laughter) I’m not sure what he does at home, but on the show, he’s not wearing the costume. And again, not to conflict with the movies, [Warners Feature Film Division] doesn’t want him in the costume, and we don’t want him in the costume. [Smallville is] a different show altogether.

As for the people who claim there's no much else to build upon. That may be true about Clark's development -into- the Superman persona, however there's plenty to build upon in the superman franchise. His first year as a Superhero would be amazing. Also there's bringing Perry in, the inner workings of the Metropolis underbelly, which we haven't really even touched upon...

Lets face it, so many people thought it should have ended a couple years a go.. That would have been terrible. Ending during a slump in quality. If it sticks to this quality or gets any better. I'm more than happy to watch. contently.

Either way I'm on board. Yeah, I have to admit I thought there was room for closure seasons ago, but since its SV canon, I believe they can pretty much go wherever they like with the series and therein lies my curiousity to see where they go for another season.

I'll be perfectly fine with S9. On a few conditions...

A. Final season. Finish it, guys. Make it clear going in to S9 that it is over. Dont start the season and be like "maaaybe there will be a season 10." End it!
B. Limited episodes. I'd rather not have 22 episodes if 6-7 of them are meaningless crap. Give us 15 good episodes and I'll be cool.
C. Superman suit. Don't **** with us. He's been on the road to becoming Superman for the past eight years. Give him the damn suit!
D. Keep up the quality of S8. This season has, so far, been the best since S5. Keep up the good work.

No link?

And like Pat said, it's nothing more than speculation that's been flying around for the past week or so.

I agree with... all of this. Yep, all of these. Especially point A. Very much point A. And C. And D.

You didn't want to post the link because the site is unknown to you but yet you posted the whole article? How does that make any sense again?

They need to pull a LOST and give this thing an end date. That way they can give the show, it's storylines, and the characters the ending they deserve.

I agree, but as you should know, is up to the morons at Warner to let him wear the suit.

**** them, man. They cant even get off their asses to do a Superman movie, why should they tell SV what they can or cannot use?!

Maybe he can just try out different versions of the costume, seeing what works as he goes a long.

Maybe because I didn't checked all the links that site has, being a mod I don't want to link to a site that might have some questionable links :whatever:
