Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Directed By: Kevin Munroe
Running Time: 1 Hour and 35 Minutes
When a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was announced, I was skeptical. One, being that a new film would not match the greatness the the first. Two, that the Turtle's last adventure wasn't exactly all that good. However, I was interested to hear that this film will be CGI and will try to focus on the darker tone of the comic it's based on. The teaser trailer was great, while the theatrical trailer was less than impressive because it seemed to dwell more on the humor than the story. Then the chance came to see the film at a free screening. Here was my chance to see this film in it's entirety, to finally judge it as a great film, or just another piece of harmless animated fluff that has been populating our movie screens.
Having finally seen the film, I can tell you this: we have found 2007's answer to The Incredibles.
Our story begins not long after the defeat of Shredder in previous installments (sorry Shredder fans, he's not in the film). The turtles seem to have grown apart as a team. Team leader Leonardo have left for traning, and hasn't been seen again for a year. Raphael has become a vigilante known as the Nigh****cher, who defends the city against crime, while also hiding the secret from his brothers. Donatello is working as a computer technician, and Michelangelo is working as a entertainer at kid's birthday parties(his outfit is hysterical). Splinter is doing his usual Splinter thing, giving advice, and being uber-wise, whil also seriving as a father figure for the turtles. April and Casey seem to be a couple now, and still visit the turtles now and again, while also working together at April's new company.
Soon, after a visit from April, Leo decides to return to the city and rejoin his brothers. Soon after, a new evil plot is brewing by a individual know as Max Winters. He has resurrected long dormant statues, to hunt down monsters that are overrunning the city. So, it's up to the Turtles to stop him,all the while dealing with an army of Foot soliders lead by a new leader.
The reason why I'm comparing this film to The Incredibles is because of one thing, the Turtles are a family. Like The Incredibles, TMNT deals with the issue of working together, and dealing with their problems. The main arc of the film is the sibling rivaly of Leo, and Raph. Throughout, they are always at odds, and this rivalry concludes with a rooftop, rain soaked battle (which was awesome). It's the chemistry of the brothers, along with Splinter himself, that held this film together tightly. Never once, did the film ever fall apart, as it kept it's energy throughout.
The tone of the movie was dark, but not too dark. It was pleasing not to see another cutesy animated film on the screen. This film had a rather dark story, and was fairly intense at a few moments. However, to lighten the mood, the film also has a few funny bits. A couple of scenes of the interaction between the brothers was of course where the main bits of humor came from. Whenever the camera focused on Michelangelo, he steals the scene, as he truely acts like a teenager throughout the picture.
I haven't even gotten to the action sequences. If you've only seen the trailers, you haven't seen anything yet. My compliments to the digital chef. Not only are the action sequences top notch, but they are some of the best CG fights I've seen. I've already mentioned the Raph and Leo fight, but the whole final fight was incredible. There was a moment, where the camera basically surveyed this huge fight and every character was given their chance to shine, it was an incredible moment in the film, if this film gets an IMAX release, this will be the reason why I would gladly pay full price for it. The CG camera work here was brilliant, and never did any of the fights feel shakey and unwatchable like what most studios do with their live action fight scenes.
So, in the end, definately go see this movie come March 23rd. It wil not only please regualr moviegoing audiences, but will enthrall almost every TMNT fan in the world.
