seems sega is downsizing majorly. axing over 300 jobs an moving the company. they also seem to be just focusing on pc/mobile gaming

this could be interesting to watch i wonder if any big franchises will go on sale

That doesn't mean you can buy Tails from Sega. You cannot make your Tails slashfictions finally realized by owning the character. :argh:

The title of your thread is a bit misleading. I mean, you clarify this in the actual post, but they are not actually shutting down shop, they are just downsizing and shifting focus (though it's said that they will continue with Sonic games and merchandise as well). Honestly, that doesn't seem any different than what they've done for the last 2-3 years. Outside the annual Sonic game, Yakuza, and a licensed game or two, I can't recall much activity on consoles in recent years.

IA. The mods should change the title bc it is misleading. Alot of companies have downsized in the last 5 years. That doesnt equate to shutting up shop

Sega's fortunes since Sony started dominating must be a shame to those who were totally into Master Systems and Mega Drives back in the day. My only Sega system was a Dreamcast.

Why Sega Are Dropping Console Games For Mobile. March 24, 2015 . 11:02am

Sega Networks, the division of Sega dedicated to mobile game development, recently published a report that sheds some light on the performance of their mobile titles.

Sega Networks, the division of Sega dedicated to mobile game development, recently published a report that sheds some light on the performance of their mobile titles. If you’re wondering why Sega are moving away from console games to focus on mobile, you’ll find the answers you were seeking below.

Sega say they have 5 titles in the top 50 ranked apps on Google Play, while on iOS they operated 8 of the top 50 ranked applications. Below is the presentation slide they use to highlight some of their mobile games, categorized by how successful they’ve been in the company’s eyes. Our breakdown of the slide can be found further down.

To summarize, anything below 50 million yen per-month is considered a failure, while the average “hit” title does about 100 million yen a month.

Big hits: Over 500 million yen per-month

  • Chain Chronicle (seeing growth)
  • Puyo Puyo Quest (seeing growth)

Titles like Chain Chronicles are classified as “big hits,” because they bring in over 500 million yen a month, and are still growing. Sega say that Chain Chronicles is available in 144 countries at present, and they expect it to remain one of their key titles in the coming fiscal year. Also in the big hits category, Puyo Puyo Quest is no slouch either, having achieved record high sales in December 2014, and 11 million downloads to date.

Hits: Over 100 million yen per-month

  • Ange Vierge (seeing growth)
  • Border Break: Gun Front Gale
  • Kingdom Conquest II
  • Clan Battle
  • Soccer Tsuku Shoot (seeing growth)
  • Dragon Parade (seeing growth)

Under the “hits” category, Ange Vierge and Soccer Tsuku Shoot are of particular interest. Ange Vierge saw record high sales in December 2014, and a TV anime tie-in is expected to lead to further growth. Meanwhile Soccer Tsuku Shoot is anticipated to see growth in 2015 as well.

Likely to be hits: Over 50 million yen per-month

  • Let’s Make a Professional Baseball Team!
  • Derby Owners Club
  • Phantom Tower Senki Griffon (seeing growth)
  • Treachery of Ciel Ark
  • Dragon Coins

Stalling titles: Over 30 million yen per-month

  • Oshare Code: Girls Holic
  • Makai Gakuen Catastrophe
  • Champion Football
  • Toki Labyrinth
  • Sealed Hero! Mine Island and the Sky Labyrinth

While Sega’s Sonic Dash game is not represented above, that title has seen 98 million downloads on a cumulative basis worldwide. Meanwhile, the entire Sonic series on mobile has seen 143.5 million downloads on a cumulative basis.

To put all of this in perspective, Sega Networks’ revenue forecast is 31.4 billion yen for the ongoing fiscal year (up 10.5 billion from the year prior) with the company having a large number of mobile titles they classify as hits. In contrast, traditional console games aren’t pulling their weight. Sega said in a separate report that digital games have been doing well, but packaged titles have been underperforming. For instance, in 2014, Sega launched Sonic Boom, which was received poorly and had sold less than 500,000 copies worldwide by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Phantasy Star Nova, a high-profile title in Japan, sold just 107,000 copies at launch, marking the lowest debut for a Phantasy Star game in years.

Additionally, The company recently launched Yakuza Zero in Japan, but said back in February that it expected “weak sales” of new titles.

Coming back to mobile, the situation is very different. In terms of growth, Sega feel that the potential scale of the Asian mobile market is 1 trillion yen, while the European and U.S. markets together amount to that figure as well. To try and tap into this potential, Sega plan to target South East Asia and South Asia, along with South America and EMEA territories. The company is targeting threefold growth in its overseas mobile segment for the coming fiscal year.

With regard to the mobile segment as a whole, 16 mainstay titles will continue to be operated, while about 20 new titles with “console quality” will be added to the lineup. Over half of these 20 console quality mobile titles are planned for release by September 2015. Oh, and five of the 20 console quality titles will be developed by Sega, rather than Sega Networks.

No, that's not true, it's not possible.
It...isn't happening.

Is it really wise to drop console games?
Sounds like a rushed move.

"We're not making console games anymore because we suck and forgot how." would be more accurate.

yup lack of talent & it's becoming expensive with each failure they make. plus this is about effort too they don't want to put the effort into it any more.

Money is found wherever you put effort towards(which some people in the comic's industry have to realize this as well), clearly they want to put more effort on mobile+PC rather than consoles so this is normal. but bad in a way too for us . Bottom line developing for mobile is in their best interest according to them, All because they don't really care to push the console market, great for them but sucks for us loyal from from the console side .

Let's see their mobile crowd stick with them longer than we did.

The only good side to this is most of the games they promised for consoles this year will still come out .

I can't fathom Sega completely abandoning the console market. While their presence will obviously be significantly reduced, there is just too much potential for Sega to just completely abandon. And honestly, their poor performance of late has more to do with poor business decisions like tying Sonic the Hedgehog to the Wii U system as opposed to making the IP available to all systems and Gearbox developing Aliens: Colonial Marines.

But as I said, there is just too much potential for Sega to just ignore. I think Sega can mine their older games from their old systems on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. I think that the Alien IP is rich for exploitation like Alien: Isolation has proven.

Such a shame. Yeah they've been lacking hugely for years but still sad. I wish them luck in mobile

Er, it's really not all that rushed if you've been following Sega at all within the last few years. Their console presence has dwindled significantly.

Er, Sonic Lost World was successful, and Sonic games have always sold more on Nintendo platforms than others since they went third party. I'm sure they had some kind of deal in place, especially since Lost World got Nintendo-themed DLC, and Sonic has basically become a de facto Nintendo franchise with Sonic being a mainstay in Smash, so that decision actually made sense.

Which was the last good-awesome Sonic and non-sonic game?

Well, Alien: Isolation is pretty good. Before that...er, I don't know, the Yakuza games are pretty well liked but they're pretty niche in the west. Sonic-wise, I don't know, don't really follow the franchise very much, but I think the consensus is that Lost Worlds was pretty decent.

Internally developed? Eh.... Outside of Yakuza I'm coming up short. They've published some excellent games in recent years though, but I don't know if that really counts.

What, you didn't want them to try and be better

I mean, they probably won't anyway, but it's a nice thought.

Dear SEGA,

Please give me an updated games on Shinobi, Space Harrier, Altered Beast and Golden Axe before I die.

Thank You.

Regards,

A life long SEGA fan who owned all your consoles starting with the Master System

Meanwhile they continue to pretend PSO2 isn't a thing.

Thankfully their contract for the Alien franchise with Fox ended with Alien: Isolation, so there is still hope. I think. Right? All I really know is Alien: Isolation deserves a sequel.
