The sequel to Shadow of Mordor is called Shadow of War. Warner Bros. hasn’t quite announced this yet, but Target spilled the news early (lol) along with the box art and some info (via NeoGAF).

From what I’ve heard, the story will be based on Talion and Celebrimbor (the two protagonists from Shadow of Mordor) working to forge a new ring that’s as powerful as Sauron’s. The Nemesis system is back, obviously, and there are new stronghold mechanics, new special abilities, and all that jazz.

More info to come whenever it’s officially announced. For now, let’s again laugh at Target.

Someone’s getting thrown into the fires of Mount Doom for this one. An item posting on the website for American discount store Target has revealed that Warner Brothers and Monolith are indeed working on a Shadow of Mordor sequel, and that it is coming in August of this year. Titled Middle Earth: Shadow of War, this sequel has Talion and Celebrimbor amassing an army to take over Mordor and forge their own Ring of Power.

For more of 2017's upcoming PC games, check out our growing master list.

According to the item description on Target’s website, Shadow of War has players “going behind enemy lines to forge your army, conquer Fortresses and dominate Mordor from within”, with Talion creating an army of Orc captains to control his captured territories. As you can imagine from the widespread fanfare surrounding the mechanic, the Nemesis System does indeed return to create “unique personal stories between each enemy and follower.”

As Shadow of War has Talion essentially trying to overthrow Sauron as ruler of Mordor, this installment will have Sauron summoning his Ringwraiths to deal with the pesky Ranger and his Wraith sidekick. The Target leak has also shown that Shadow of Mordor will be getting a special ‘Gold Edition’, complete with four expansion packs and a special “Gold War Chest”.
The four expansions are split up in Story and Nemesis Expansions. The item description of the Gold Edition explains that the Nemesis Expansions adds “a unique Orc tribe” to the lands of Mordor, which includes “new enemies, followers, missions, abilities, weapons, Fortresses, wilderness updates and a new Mythic gear set”. The Story Expansions “introduce a new campaign, playable characters and abilities, side missions, enemies, allies and more.”

The Gold Edition comes with the Slaughter and Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansions, along with the Blade of Galadriel and Desolation of Mordor Story Expansions. Monolith are clearly not messing around with content for Shadow of War, with this sequel looking to expand on almost every aspect of the original Shadow of Mordor. While the store postings only show off the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Shadow of War, the original was simultaneously released on PC along with home console, so one can take it as read that Talion and Celebrimbor will also be returning to slay some Orcs on the PC. As for a release date, the store posting states that Shadow of War is set to launch on August 22. The base version will retail for the usual $60 price tag, while the Gold Edition will go for $100. It’s safe to expect a reveal from Monolith and Warner Brothers in the coming days, to officially spill the beans on this long awaited sequel.

Really hope this is legit. I absolutely loved Shadow of Mordor and would love to get a Monolith sequel!

This goes on sale in five months and they haven't even announced it yet or began marketing? That seems late to start marketing a video game.

Never played the first, but did have interest in it. How good was it?

WB Games might be the worst company in gaming now. They are gouging so far in advance, it is crazy. So while I love the first game, it dampens my expectations here.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised the announcement trailer was just a cgi cutscene with no gameplay. Next week then.

I don't really see how WB Games is any worse than any other triple A publisher. All of them treat their customers like **** and nickle and dime us into oblivion. They're all equally awful for one reason or another.

Oh there are a lot of reasons. Their nickel and diming is perhaps the worst, plus they release broken games and have actually screwed up very expensive editions of their games. And they have done this multiple times.

Just bought the first at the weekend funnily enough, wanted to play it for a while, so will get through then go for the sequel straight after.

Ubisoft, EA, 2k, Bethesda, Squeenix, etc are all guilty of this. EA and 2k have ruined their sports titles because this type of ****. Triple A games have become platforms for DLC and micro-transactions. They have to make all the money, the 59.99 is not enough and if you want to avoid it, you have to go elsewhere and it's unfortunate because you have avoid those franchises you love which is easier said than done. The new Zelda has a season pass for ****s sake.

micro-transactions = Most of the time the choice is yours . My brother play FIFA Ultimate Team for years and he never used micro-transactions in the end of the day they are for people do not have the desire or the time to be good at the game

DLC = Wait for Game of the Year most of the time there is always one

That's what I always do since getting back into gaming. I am old school prefer the whole completed game on disc.

I didnt have problems with Shadow of Mordor so Im hoping Shadow of War will be like that and not the bug riddled mess that Arkham Origins was.

The old "its optional" argument doesn't really solve the problem. If folks don't understand why having free to play elements in full priced games is an issue then you are part of the problem. Waiting for game of the year version is the wisest move, but it highlights another issue, early adopters pay premium price for the worst version of a game and that's not ok either.

Yay, an excuse to play the first game.

Just bought the GOTY version off Amazon myself. Always had an interest in SOM, but it released when I didn't have a PS4, and then I just forgot about it, until now. Only 21 bucks, good deal.

so this has been officially announced now some article made too pages cause of too

After Target jumped the gun and put up the pre-order page yesterday for Middle Earth: Shadow of War, Warner Bros has officially announced the game with an incredible new, action-packed trailer.

In the game, players wield a new Ring of Power and confront the deadliest of enemies, including Sauron and his Nazgul, in a monumental battle for Middle-earth. David Haddad, Warner Bros. President, commented on the continued partnership with Monolith Studios by saying:
“Monolith Productions continues to innovate by introducing deeper, more personalised gameplay experiences, coupled with authentic storytelling. Middle-earth: Shadow of War truly drives the genre forward by taking the Nemesis System to new heights and allowing players to create their own personal journey within Middle-earth.”
The Nemesis system that was created for the first game has been expanded on to include two new components; Followers and Fortresses. The followers bring new stories of loyalty, revenge, etc to the game, but it's unknown if this will happen automatically or as a result through branding like in Shadow of Mordor. The Fortresses allows players to utilize different strategies to conquer dynamic strongholds and create personalized worlds with their unique Orc army.
Both Warner and Monolith describe the expanded world in Shadow of War by saying:
"Players will be engrossed in a richer, more personal and expansive world full of epic heroes and villains, iconic locations, original enemy types, even more personalities and a new cast of characters with untold stories."
Both Talion and Celebrimbor have returned to Mordor, and they must unite everyone against the evil hand of Sauron. All of this in an expanded universe of Lord of the Rings has the excitement already extremely high for Shadow of War as Shadow of Mordor won multiple awards, including many Game of the Years.
Although not announced today, yesterday's Target hiccup did reveal that a Gold Edition would launch on both Xbox and PlayStation. Listed at $99.99, it would include the main game plus four additional story expansions and a number of cosmetic items. No info on a season pass was announced, but with Shadow of Mordor having one, it would seem logical that this game would as well.
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor will launch on Xbox One and Windows 10 via Xbox Play Anywhere and also be made available for Project Scorpio. Other platforms include PC, PS4, and PS4 Pro. The release date is listed for August 22nd in North America and the 25th in Europe.

This trailer looks pretty out-there on a narrative level. I have some friends who are Tolkien diehards who will probably be upset. But I valued the first game for its gameplay and nemesis system and I'm looking forward to those with this one.

That Mithril Edition is going to be like 250 bucks, I can feel it.

But I want it...:csad:

It's been a bit of a whirlwind over the last 48 hours for Lord of the Rings fans after Target accidentally leaked Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, the follow-up to 2014's Shadow of Mordor. Warner Bros. then "officially revealed" the game yesterday, and now PC players will have an idea of what kind of rig they should expect to have to be able to get the most out of the game. According to the Shadow of War's Steam Page, it would help to come packing a GTX 970 and 16 GB worth of RAM to be able to play the game at its recommended settings.

Here's a screenshot of the minimum and recommended specs:

We have yet to see the game in action, but Shadow of War promises to let players "conquer Fortresses in massive battles" and "dominate Mordor with your personal orc army." Basically, it sounds like developer Monolith is taking the foundation of what made Shadow of Mordor tick and is evolving it to even bigger heights. It looks like we've got a true sequel on our hands.
