Sharks Like to Approach Humans from Behind, Study Suggests

Sharks are the rogues of the sea.

I thought sharks mostly attack from below

I thought sharks only attacked when swept up by a tornado.

Well if it's a ghost shark, expect to be attacked everywhere.

So....sharks are butt burglars? Is that what we're insinuating here?

In the immortal words of Roy Scheider: we're gonna need a bigger butt.

If you looked like this, would you want them to see your face?

The solution is simple. When they get too close, turn around and they'll freeze in their tracks and cover their faces. Then run like hell, pick up the key, go out the door, and jump into the moving bar for a high score; World 4-3 beaten.

I had to read that twice before I got that.

Sharks just hope to catch someone swimming naked. It makes them feel less self conscious.

This is especially interesting considering that:

1) Most fish have an extremely wide field of vision that allows them to see pretty much behind them to begin with, and

2) A fish doesn't have to see something to know where it is.

...though I would tend to agree with Burgess, in this case.

It does seem like it makes sense that sharks would figure out humans can't see behind them and it makes a good attack vector.

This is why I swim with a camera mounted to my butt for constant rear view surveillance

That's not far off from what they do in places where tigers frequently attack humans. They just stick a mask on the back of their heads that looks like a face... although I believe I read that some tigers are figuring out that ruse too.

Question: why would they need an "attack vector" specific to humans?

We are easy meal providers is my best guess. Not necessarily for eating us but spear fishing, abalone divers, things of that nature are going to attract sharks. And in the places people feed sharks (Caribbean reef sharks especially), they definitely see you as a food source.

I do not know why they would feel a need to attack or approach humans for any other reason.

So sharks like dark meat. Not a surprise since it's the tastiest. :word:
