Before there was Sharknado, there was Sharktopus - the freak of nature presented by Roger Corman and released on Syfy.

Production has begun at New Horizons on another Sharktopus feature: Sharktopus Versus Mermantula.

Yes, you read that right.

Casper Van Dien and Catherine Oxenberg are starring in the film, directed by Kevin O'Neill who is currently in post-production on Sharktopus Versus Pteracuda starring Robert Carradine.

What the hell is a Mermantula? Funny you should ask, we have the answer via a plot synopsis...

In order to take down Sharktopus, Ray Brady, a former basketball player is injected with a transformation serum that alters his genetic make-up to become part man, part pirahna and part tarantula. Though, unsuccessful at his first attempt to bring down Sharktopus, Ray injects himself with a growth hormone, increasing his strength ten fold and has a final showdown with Sharktopus in a baseball stadium.

Good God...

That's it! I'm going to make a movie too.

I didn't even know of Pteracuda before this press release.

The world ends when all of these combine into one mega-creature that consumes it.

How about Sharkenstein? A killer shark made of the reanimated corpses of other killer sharks?

This takes a lot of the suspense out of what will win Best Picture at the next Oscars.

Am I the only one who is increasingly less amused with these? They're becoming more and more predictably "outrageous".

It's impossible for me to find these funny or relevant when they're made with the intent to be "so bad they're good" in the first place. I'll take the MST3K movies any day. There's something brutally funny about a film that tries so hard to be "good", but fails miserably. There's comedy in that. These Sharknadopirhanapus movies are the "class clown" kid in high school trying really hard to be funny and outrageous.

Call me when they make Shaqzilla vs HurriCage

pirahna + tarantula + man = mermantula? He better at least look like a mermaid spider

Sharktopus was a little better than most, but honestly these movies usually end up being surprisingly boring.

I enjoy them for what they are.... light entertainment.

Am I the only one who just adores all these movies?

Ugh. Enough of this ****ing trend. I blame twitter for this. Sharknado was no different than any of the other dime-a-dozen movies that air on Syfy Saturdays, and twitter had to turn it into a thing.

I love SyFy's mostly boring but bad movies. The haters can suck it and I mean that with respect.

"Casper Van Dien and Catherine Oxenberg are starring in the film"

Of course they are.

I see where you're coming from, and I agree. The novelty of these things worn off quite a while ago. I swear to the heavens, I found this year's promo for Shark Week more entertaining in only 30 seconds than all of Sharktopus.
