Shazam Shazam General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

What would be a good Elvis song from that era (late 60s/ early 70s) that would fit with this movie?

Actually it's probably early 70s, because in 1968 Elvis still was in black leather and had shorter hair, but longer than it was in the 50s and early 60s, with thicker sideburns. But not much later than very early 70s, because the Captain Marvel Jr jumpsuit was before Elvis became really bloated and wore that white rhinestone one.

I wouldn't want them to go overboard with it.
He doesn't become Elvis.
It's one thing to give a tiny nod to the fans in the know that Captain Marvel Jr. inspired Elvis' look, later costumes and "TCB" logo, but if the general audience is going -why am I listening to an Elvis number? You've gone to far.

A quick nod of a pose, or expression, and maybe a tiny recognizable rock-riff leitmotif, when Freddy is in action.
Maybe from Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, Shook up, or Jailhouse, all which are easily recognizable and speak a bit to either Freddy's color theme, character, or attitude.
But I wouldn't want a whole song or musical montage with it.

Maybe when Freddy gets his own movie:woot:

As far as what decade to chose from, Elvis was apparently reading comics from when he was young, I think going back to the debut of Freddy, I believe when Elvis was 6 or 7 years old, so the inspiration was likely always there.

Guys... It comes down to Elvis copying the Cap jr. hairstyle. That's pretty much all that should be referenced with his look.

OT:

We were just used to seeing it so it looked somewhat normalized, but the later Animated Series and JLU style guide and proportions got freakin ridiculous.

It was even more pronounced when translated to figure form.
The giant heads on the girls.
All the gorilla arms, and chicken legs.

Wow, they did didn't they! :funny:

But Elvis only started wearing Captain Marvel Jr jumpsuits from about 1970. His hairstyle before in the 50s and 60s was like Freddy, but he wore different types of stage clothes which weren't as flamboyant.

Of course, I can't imagine Freddy actually liking 1970s Elvis music (unless his parents listened to it). A kid is more likely to be into 50s or 60s Elvis than 70s Elvis. 70s Elvis is simply not as cool sounding.

I don't think that second pic is Elvis, yo.

You're right!
Cool picture though ;)

Yeah most of it is speculative. The outfits, the short cape, the logo, even the hairdo, Still DC/WB would be smart to let it continue.
I'd love to see at least some Elvis nod from Freddy in the film.

Billy and Mary match up the most with their adult counterparts and look like complete faces.

4 years ago from today :p (found the link on the 1st post):

Warner Bros. has several other movies in development unconnected to the Justice League that are based on DC superheroes and fantasy and crime titles from its Vertigo line of genre comics, said Mr. Silverman and Toby Emmerich, president of Warner’s New Line Cinema label. They include “Shazam,” “Metal Men,” “100 Bullets,” and “Fables.”

And while there are no plans yet for a “Justice League” spinoff featuring Ms. Gadot’s “Wonder Woman,” Warner executives said they are warm to the idea.
“That is our hope,” said Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing. “With the right script, that could be viable. The world is ready for her.”

What a surprise they were toying with obscure titles over their A-listers even back then. :whatever: Haven't heard a peep out of those other titles, but I'm really glad Shazam snuck through. Also they were right about WW. Right movie at the right time. :ilv:

Kudos to whoever lined up all those pics, pulled it from twitter if you want to thumbs up them- https://***********/BeyondityArt/status/988766045597974529
You are right Billy and Mary match best, and are probably the most significant they had to get those right, next Freddy.
The others while I love their addition, lets be real, will probably get that "...and look, we transformed too!" moment on the side, and a briefer showing as their adult transforms.
Ian Chen(Eugene) and Faith Herman (Darla) really still have their baby faces, so no adult was going to match up that great. I like who they chose.

Jovan Armand(Pedro)'s character really goes the most extreme physical change. (and there is some potential PC-Police level controversy over the visually physical and slight ethno change, to what is implied are characters becoming their idealized-self image. Oh man is that a mine-field. I'm fine with it (and while I recognize the "complaint" I've only seen one post so far, the actors probably have more in common than most people think).
Yet the potential is just siting there waiting to be triggered! :funny:
The character is minor enough, hopefully they can avoid it.

Over all I think they did great casting and matching the comics , and captured the characters both kids and adults fantastically. .
As well with Mark Strong as Sivana (who hopefully goes through his own physical transform towards the more classic Orlok look by end).
And of course Dwayne Jonson as Teth Adam, who we all know will probably steal this movie with his (worst kept secret) big reveal at the end! ;)
Looking forward to it.

Double standards, I imagine there would be less outrage or PC brigade wouldn't be offended as much if a skinny dude visualizes that he wants his "ideal grownup self" to look like a muscular Greek god but somehow a fat kid is not allowed to think same.

That's the ****ed up world we live in now. :csad:

To be fair, lets not faux-outrage in the other direction here: I said I saw one post, so this isn't a thing. I suggested that the potential trigger was there, not that it had happened . And it was actually more about the somewhat ethnic transform from one actor to the other actor.
(which I recognize, but personally think is negligible, like I said they likely have more in common).
It's all good, and likely a non-issue for most.

Love the cast.
If anything for me the only thing even slightly irking me personally, is that the actors playing Billy and Mary don't read as twins.
And that's just about an aspect of the classic story, not the actors. I love the actors they chose.

Apparently; posted on CBRforum
The actress Grace Fulton was in the director's previous movie Annabelle: Creation. So I think he wanted her in the film and made the age change for Mary to reflect the casting.
It's hard to read, but I wonder if Grace Fulton would have fit more as adult Mary, and then cast a younger actress closer to Billy's(Asher Angel's) age, for non-transformed Mary, and they could have kept the classic long lost twins discovery?
But again that's one aspect of the story, it's not defining, I like all the actors they got.

I was making a more general point, not directed at you.

Still baffling that there's no official photo of Shazam yet.

Ok, I get it, and what J.Cassidy said too ...I agree with your point about the skinny kid "transforming" into the idealized body, is the go to acceptable trope. But a fat kid doing the same could likely trigger the "your fat shaming" police. Why can't he be a hero and still fat!? etc.
I also recognize that potential landmine.
Although it hasn't triggered yet, I am curious to see how it plays out?:funny:

I don't know how these things are planned or scheduled, but it does seem like something they would want to get on top of.
Not having their first images be official, but something snapped unofficially behind the scenes, seems like a constant mistake.
Didn't the director even joke about this production not being caught that way? Maybe he sensed the inevitably, and was just trying to get the studio to react and get on top of it.
Of course it happened anyway.

As a fan of how the movie costume looks, I really have no problem with it. I wouldn't have minded the classic asymmetric cut and button on the chest. Yet they didn't shy away from the bright colors, the red they chose really pops, and there is enough gold/yellow elements it completely invokes the whimsical yet powerful original. The "new" hood, hangs back enough, that it can also read as the more classic cape, so he can wear it ether way. Also they kept it traditionally short cape, which is probably the first thing some would have abandoned.
And I can easilly imagine the effects, lighting crackle and energy added to the chest emblem, so it's all good for me.
Also love the (Tawky) Tiger emblems on the cape clasps.

Makes me wonder if they will each have their own unique totem power-animal?

Off the cuff, and keeping it fun with some variety I can Imagine:
Billy - Power - Tiger = (Tawky)
Mary - Courage - Bunny = (Invoking Hoppy the Marvel bunny)
Freddy - Stamina - Eagle
Eugene - Wisdom - Praying Mantis
Darla - Speed - Gazelle
Pedro - Strength - Bull

Or making them all big-cats:
Wizard - Lion
Billy - Power - Tiger (Tawky)
Mary - Courage - White Tiger (his sister)
Freddy - Stamina - Puma
Eugene - Wisdom - Lynx
Darla - Speed - Chetah
Pedro - Strength - Jaguar

This I can get behind

i think WB plans a big SDCC panel for this , or they drop something out of knowwhere anytime soon

I have to assume we get something for SHAZAM out of SDCC.

When are we going to get confirmation on these other actors and actresses like Michelle Borth? I want to know that she is definitely in this movie.

Shazam comes out next April so I don't think we get an teaser trailer until October or November at least which is like 5 or 6 months away from its 2019 April release date

is possible , But if the VFX was ready WB has showed the Trailers to the public the last 2-3 SDCC but who knows

the potentiel is extremely huge for this franchise, Kids who turn into Super Hero
is always somethin people want to see.

but this whole Marvel Storm is not a good news for this Movie, since Captain marvel & Avengers 4 will drop in march & april

maybe they need to push it back for a June Release

Yes I would definitely push back Shazam's release date to either June, July or even August of 2019 or even push it all the way back to 2020
