Great, but hard thread, DACMAN.

Best Graphics: Either Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube) or Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

Best Story: Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2). Runner ups go to Kingdom Hearts (only the first one on PS2) and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (Gamecube)

Best Gameplay: GTA: San Andreas (PS2, Xbox) or Twilight Princess (but I played it on Wii)

Best Multi-Player: Super Smash Bros. Melee, easily

Best PS2 game: MGS3

Best Gamecube GAme: Again, I'd like to say Twilight Princess but as a Wii player I'll go with either RE4 or Super Smash Bros. Melee

Best Xbox Game: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas OR Halo

Best Overall Game: Tough call, I'd prefer to go by genre but if I had to choose I guess Resident Evil 4 (and again this goes back to me counting Twilight Princess as a next gen. game).

Resident Evil 4

Best Sound/Music
Halo

Best Story
Prince of Persia (it was really charming and funny before the sequels ruined it)

Best Multi-player
Pro Evolution soccer

Best Gameplay
Grand Theft Auto 3 (though it was bettered by its sequels it really started the whole thing so it gets the nod)

Best PS2 Game
GTA 3

Best Xbox Game
Halo (the sequel made some great gameplay improvements but it's single player level design was a step back which hindered the great additions to the game)

Best Game Cube Game
Resident Evil 4 (its even better than twilight)

Best Over All
GTA 3.
As Super Mario Bros was to the 8 bits, Streetfighter II to the 16 bits, As tomb raider/metal gear solid was to the era when bits where sensibly less emphasised GTA 3 is to the gaming era just passed.

An award should go to microsoft though for simply dragging consoles online properly

Totally disagree. Mario=8 bit, sure. Sonic was the 16 bit king. The 32 bit king was Final Fantasy 7. 64 bit king was Mario 64 or Zelda OoT. This game era was Halo, easy.

It's all a matter of opinion anyway, so it's not a big deal

BEST PS2 GAME: God of War

BEST XBOX GAME: Halo

BEST GAMECUBE GAME: Resident Evil 4

BEST OVERALL GAME: honestly don't know. Right now I'd say God of War just because I'm a sucker for mythology, but not sure if I'd stick by it.

Best Game Cube Game: Resident Evil

Best Over All: Umm... GTA San Andreas I guess? I wasn't too big a fan of last gen games I guess...

Now that I think about it, I havn't really played too many last gen games.

edit: But very good thread.

Sonic was the 16 bit king.

Nonesense.
Just look at all the 2d fighters that tried to steal sf2's limelight, mortal kombat, anything by snk heck even some stuff capcom released.
No one immitated sonic cos frankly in the harsh light of day it wasn't that good compared to something like super mario world.

The sales for streetfighter 2 (inc variants) outsols sonic in the 16 bit home console era (and not even considering coin op revenue either). PLUS it was also multi format (can something really define an era on the weaker of the formats?)

To recap then sonic not as influential (by virtue of imitations) and not as popular (by virtue of sales)

Streetfighter also popularised a specific genre, sonic was just a poor mans mario.

The 32 bit king was Final Fantasy 7. 64 bit king was Mario 64 or Zelda OoT.

These are the same era due to the way the consoles were positioned and I might actually agree on some level here, can't forget about goldeneye either though.
I'm not certain on this era truth told.

This game era was Halo, easy.

Again no and saying 'easily' doesn't constitue an argument either.

It's the same reason streetfighter beats out sonic many many games tried to be GTA in the past generation and it's sales far outstrip anything halo achieved. Again GTA was also multi format. Again GTA was significantly more innovative than halo also.

Remember I am not discussing QUALITY, only what were the most influential games.

Totally disagree. You put Mario as the 8 bit king and it is obviously not a multi format game. Same with Zelda and 007.

And Halo, everyone want to be "the Halo killer". It is the bar in which all other FPS are held. GTA didn't start the sand box gameplay. Body Harvest did as far as I know. GTA just made it popular. They did nothing original. The story and feel of the game was ripped right from Scar Face. The gameplay was ripped from Body Harvest.

But if we're talking just sales, then yeah, you're right. Sales yes, innovation, no.

You're right I did but the 8 bit era was so completely dominated by the NES that its a fair enough shout, plus there were hardly any killer aps for the master system that compared to mario.

I did say though i'm unsure of the 32/64 bit era. Due to the difference in the CD and cartridge media each console used there was far less multiformat games so it's more likely in that era that it wouldn't be a multiformat game.

this doesn't apply to 16 bits or the era just passed to them using all the same formats (cartridges and then DVDS) so it's more likely to be a multiformat game.

And Halo, everyone want to be "the Halo killer". It is the bar in which all other FPS are held.

No thats half life.

Halo's a great game but its not that infuential and has even less innovation in it. Halo like it's tagline says is an "evolution"

Only for vice city was the story from scar face.
Body harvest was the GTA teams early work but yes, but it achieved nothing like the sophistication of the GTA series. Body harvest doesn't even have 'sand box' gameplay in it's truest sense due to the fact that it was still level based. But regardless it's the popularisation thats important!!

Far more games tried to 'be' gta than halo, partially due to the fact the halo had little to distinguish it (beyone quality) from any other FPS.

But if we're talking just sales, then yeah, you're right. Sales yes, innovation, no.

Sales AND influence.

The same developer that did Body Harvest also did the Grand Theft Auto series.

Quit acting like different developers did them
