LAPD chief said the shooter is one of the 2 men dead in the incident. A suicide note and the gun used have been recovered. They believe the shooter was a student who shot a professor and then turned the gun on himself.

Two young kids are ending the day without their father. I can't imagine what they're experiencing. My most sincere prayers go out to that family.

A clearer picture has come out about the shooter and it's looking like someone who'd been under a lot of stress and just snapped. The shooter, Mainak Sarkar, was a former engineering Ph.D student and research assistant for Klug. Sarkar, who was originally done his undergrad work in his native India, had gotten his Master's from Stanford and spent time as a research assistant at the University of Texas before getting his Ph.D at UCLA. Apparently his grievance against Klug was that he stole code and passed it off to another student to claim as their own. Sarkar was said to be unemployed and living in MN before the shooting in LA and he's been linked to the murder of someone thought to be his ex-GF there.

Indeed, the more info that comes out on this case shows a person who had been turning into a paranoid time bomb for some time. It will be interesting to hear his "rationale" for killing his ex-wife.
