Five confirmed dead. Not a handgun used. Preliminary report is that there are up to three injured. Seems that at this time reports are that gun man is in custody but he is not cooperating with police and there is no positive identification of the shooter at this time.

Adult white male. Used a shotgun and apparently had an explosive device. Apparently police have name but not publicly releasing yet. No motive yet.

Thing is, broadly speaking in the USA, violent crime is down. I lived in NYC during the crack era. It's just not comparable to today. But these mass incidents where the motivation seems to just be to kill a large group of people, not connected to a crime of passion, personal animosity or a spill over from some ongoing organized criminal enterprise? Yeah, anecdotally that does seem to be on the rise. It makes it seem like the climate is one where violence is around every corner.

I know Hannity is a joke, but this is irresponsible to an extreme. He's already blaming someone, using his position and voice as a Fox News personality. The police haven't even released a motive.

Even the more left leaning media aren't outright blaming Trump. They're acknowledging that Trump has called the press the enemy of America. However in the same sentence they say it's not confirmed as the police haven't released a motive, so not to assume that's the case.

Sometimes you just have to swallow those words about to come out of your mouth. Say now's not the time, and not take that pointless political jab. Especially in an ongoing tragedy involving death.

Police did refer to it as a "targeted attack" as well as looking into threats made to the paper via social media that were recent. Whether those threats were from the shooter or connected to him is still being investigated.

Shooter’s name is Jarrod Ramos. He filed a defamation suit against the paper in 2012 that was dismissed by a judge.

Seems to be a guy with a grudge that originated in a piece from back in 2011 about him. Jesus... To stew in juices like that for so long... This obsessive nature that drives out all other considerations... This is getting to be too widespread a mentality, it seems to me. It's evident all over the online world.

I would say that unless a manhunt was underway and a description was needed to help catch him. -- it doesn't matter. But he was caught before the media started calling him a "white man" -- so what is the hurry to label him?

What if he was rather dark and the media decided to call him Hispanic or middle eastern and he turned out to be a Caucasian named John Smith.

I think Hispanic and middle eastern groups would say -- "what was the hurry in labeling a suspect already in custody before you know for sure?"

The "media" was working off the description the police were giving before they had a positive I.D.

An incident like this happens and people want answers. The police gave the answers they had at the time.

Though I can already tell that if there had been no description you would have suspected that there was some reason to NOT give out that information.

Probably, but they kind of saved a lot of that inhumanity for people of other faiths -- whereas now people kill mass numbers of people in their own towns and communities with no remorse. Do they think other people exist only to be erased on a whim of their anger and rage?
