So here is the deal. Im writing my own Superman novel, and I thought I would get some opinions on how to do the Jor-El/Clark relationship before putting pen to paper, in particular, if Jor-El should tell Clark to become Superman, ala the 1978 movie, or Clark shoudl CHOOSE to become Superman on his own.

And I put this thread here in this forum because I know the Misc. Superman board doesn't get alot of traction.

It should be Clark's choice, I think.

Agreed. Adopting the Superman identity should be a natural evolution for Clark. He's been brought up with the mindset that you help people when you can. Because he can do all these amazing things, the drive to hold himself out as a hero is his own doing.

Good, I like what Im seeing. Keep it coming........I like the people here so much better than the pure Superman boards.

Also, a few other suggestions for your book:

Have the suit made of the flight suit he was wearing when he came to Earth or the blankets he was wrapped in (either works, really). The symbol should be a kryptonian symbol. Also, I would suggest using the "Lex Luthor: Man of Steel" characterization for Lex. As in, not malevolant or self serving, but instead so self sacrificing and wanting to help humanity that he is willing to deprive himself of all happyness and preform absolutely monsterous tasks to serve what he sees to be the greater good. Makes his conflict with Superman more complex. And use Kryptonite as little as possible. I'd rather he just fight a tough villain.

Im in utter agreement with you. I was atleast going to have the S Shield on the Superman costume be from the blanket Kal-El was wrapped up in that Ma Kent sewed into the costume. And I also prefer that version of Lex Luthor over the " kill billions " version.

Im going to attempt to naturalize things as much as possible, ala Batman Begins. For example, I want to examine people's initial thoughts on a man flying around in a red cape. Like seriously, what would todays wacked out real world think of that. Half of them would be scared sh^tless. Supeman is going to have to earn the worlds trust, not just get cheered on after saving a falling helicopter. And another thing is people always wonder how the FOS got built. Im turning it into a simple Kryptonian Base for Earth Exploration that Jor-El was in charge of, therefor leaving him the the disc/key that operates it. And I really want to make the villians more bad ass, and feature a couple of my own idea's for villian.

And I know I said I wanted to naturalize things, and how Im going to do this wouldn't contradict, but I want to bring some mysticsm in. I have this cool idea that involves the souls of all the dead kryptonians that I want to use at some point.

i like where youre going with this. people wouldnt just embrace superman. infact i think he would have a really hard time. everyone would want to know "where were you during 9/11? or any other major event that happened. why now? we dont need a savior. stuff like that would really mess with him and his desire to help people. not that it would deter him, but it would be a great inner struggle..

Cool. Also, I would suggest maybe having Lex be the one who cracks the computer's on Clark's ship and is the first to actually understand Kryptonian technology and language.

About the naturalization, sounds cool. I had some ideas to that regard. I was thinking maybe Clark would try and not make himself known. He just goes in, saves the day, and leaves. Doesn't pose for cameras or do interveiws. Gives him a Loch Ness Monster type status. But that seem like a bit too much of a departure for what you're doing.

As for the villains, they seem fine as is. I'd suggest maybe Parasite or Metallo.

Weird. Not sure I like the sound of that. But hey, you might be able to pull it off.

Well I will promise you that Lex will be the first to discover Supermans true identity. The two of them meet in Clark's final year of high school after Clark wins the Lexcorp scholarship to atend any college of his choosing for free, and the two DO bond, to the point where Lex wants Clark to work for him immediatly after college and forget all about journalism, a worthless career according to Lex. Let me just say, that after getting a good picture of Superman, Lex whips out a pen and draws glasses and shaggy hair over the picture. But he keeps the secret....................Also, Lex happened to drop that scholarship off himself while investigating the Krytponite in Smallville and surrounding areas, which he believes will give him the power to create his " Metallo Project ".

I also do plan on having Clark try to be a masked hero for a fews saves, but he ends up scaring more people than helping and through the advice of the Kents decides to make himself a public figure.

And the whole souls of dead kryptonians thing figures into a storyline Im going to do with Darkseid, who in my own continuity will be partially responsible for the destruction of Krytpon. Not the manin cause, as that will still be the planet core shifting, but that shifting will be caused by a war with Darkseid and Apokolips after coming to the aid of New Genisis. Lets just say when Darkseid first arrives, Superman has no chance.

Never personally been a fan of Lex and Clark meeting anywhere besides Metropolis once Clark moves there.

Well, he doesn't need a mask not to be public. But whatever.

Sounds interesting.

Well I just like the tie in with Clark winning the Lexcorp scholarship and Lex hunting for Kryptonite in Smallville to bring his Metallo project online to lead the crusade against terrorism to gain a head up in the Presidential race. Lex know's that Clark is much more than a run of the mill journalist, which leads him to be the only person to break the disguise. Lex basically wants to wipe out all terroism and competitors to the United States so that we are safe, rich, and well off. Lex thinks he is doing a great service to America, much like Hitler thought he was doing a great thing for Germany in World War 2. There are Hitler parallels that i created with Lex, so Superman not only needs to save America from Lex, but the world.

The mask thing I thought of because, well, almost every other hero wears a mask, so I would assume that Clark atleast TRIED it and didn't like it. It would be neat to see Clark Kent on his first adventure ala Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, flying from roof to roof with a ski mask on but at the same time scaring the crap out of people, which leads to Primary Colors, a spit curl, and a big grin.

Personally, I wouldn't make Lex such a nationalist. I'd rather have his veiws be a bit more worldly.

Makes sense, I suppose.

The reason Lex is such a nationalist is because, while he always flirted with the boundries of doing truly terible things, he was always pulled back by his fiance at the time. She was killed in a terrorist attack, and Lex has the resources to make sure everyone feels his anger.

This part was created out of beef with Smallville. This past season, they keep trying to play it off like he is turning more evil by the episode but with no clear reason why. We were always promised a defining moment, and in the first couple seasons you could see the seeds being planted, but nothing came of them. He is just being evil for the sake of being evil. So I thought I would fulfill the promise of a defining moment for myself, and Lex's fiance being killed in a terrorist attack was what I came up with. Im trying to naturalize and explain everything about all the characters.

There's actually a scene I have in my head that is somewhat like the conversation Dr. Loomis has with Michael Myers in Halloween 5, where Superman/Clark talks to Lex about his "rage" and how it has consumed his every decision.

The thing with my novels are.....it's fitting this damn Jor-El thing into it. Ive almost decided to do it like the Animated Series where they meet.

I'm not sure I like Lex having a clear cut motivation like that. Way I see it, he should be one of the smartest and richest men on the planet. He was born in the slums and built his empire up from nothing. Living in the slums, his mother dying when he was young, and his father (who later died under "mysterious circumsances") being quite cruel taught him first hand of the cruelties of the world. He feels that humanity can and should pull itself up into a better world. Being one of the world's smartest and richest men, he feels it is his responsibility to aid in this, no matter what the cost. Having him being so nationalistic is too limiting.

Just have him find a video recording and leave it at that.

Ck needs to decide to become Superman by himself. It is his duty to do so.

Shouldn't this be in one of the Superman forums?

Well, this is a "general" forum, and outside of the Superman Returns forum it's pretty dead. And plus, I like people here better. Everyone on the Superman board thinks the end all be all of Superman in Donner's film, and thats not the case. So ill keep this here in the general forum.

I like the idea of Jor-El sending Clark to rule earth, and via Clark's upbringing and his choice, he becomes earth's savior instead of its king.

I prefer the idea that Jor El simply sent him to Earth to live. Didn't charge him with any other tasks.

I think Jor-El should encourage Clark to do good, but I wouldn't mind seeing PA Kent make a sugestion as to how Clark can do taht good.

So kind of similar to Birthright???

Somewhat, I have things Im going to switch up though. I know for sure that CLARK KENT will be the real person, and Superman the disguise.

If Superman had been created only 30 years ago, this would have been the case.

It makes him a more iconic here if he chooses it himself. He's been raised in this wholesome all-american environment then starts developing his powers, sees that he can do some good and so he goes & does it.

Much better than "because my daddy said to."
