I know it's been asked before but should Superman be the sole survivor of Krypton? I prefer Superman to be the sole survivor of Krypton, sure. It just makes him a bit more unique in my estimation to not only be something of a alien that introduces himself to the human race by doing good (fighting for truth, justice, and the american way), but also the very last of his kind. To have other survivor's such as Zod, and Kara works. But it's certainly a concept that I could live without.

I prefer Superman being Krypton's Sole Survivor, as the character was in the Golden Age and Post-Crisis. I like Supergirl and Power Girl, but they don't have to be from Krypton, too. A protoplasmic origin was created for Supergirl by John Byrne in 1988 and an Atlantean origin was created for Power Girl by Paul Kupperberg in 1988, that way Supergirl and Power Girl still exist and also become more original and unique characters, rather than just Kryptonian cousins of Supermen, and Superman can still be Krypton's Sole Survivor. And that's the way it was until Jeph Loeb brought back the Kryptonian Supergirl who is Superman's biological cousin in 2004 and Geoff Johns made Power Girl Kryptonian again and Earth-Two Superman's biological cousin in 2005. Plus Geoff Johns created New Krypton in 2008 with 100,000 Kryptonians running around. Sheesh! Diluting Superman with an endless flow of Kyptonians.

I'm so in agreement here. The COIE cleaned up DC's continuity and made it a fun place to be then we get idiots like DiDio, Waid, and Johns bringing all the convolution back.

When you use the phrase 'Diluting', I completely agree.

It's one of those things that was the way it started and that most people think of as being the case; but I'm not sure how important it is. I don't mind, though, if you have a Supergirl from another planet who isn't really his cousin like in the Animated Series (it even opens it up to having a Supergirl of different ethnicity) but I hated the idea of what Supergirl was from 1988-1996-or-so. Peter David's work was interesting, but even more confusing.

It's one of those rules that I don't agree with but where I am willing to (I don't meant this the way it might sound) let the baby let the bottle.

Agreed

no; i think krypton's population was advanced enough for space travel...so there could've been a few other kryptonians off the planet when it was destroyed.

Hello guys, been visiting and reading the boards for a year or so now, and figure it's time to finally sign up and give my 2 cents :)

I like the idea of other Kryptonians being alive off planet at one point, but Brainiac has since hunted them all down one by one looking for the one Kryptonian who houses all the Kryptonian knowledge AKA KAL EL who traveled to earth with all the knowledge of the most influential scientist of the planet.

A good exchange of dialouge about how there were others could really help set Superman off to really have him throw down on Brainiac when he finds out that becasue of this machine he now actually is the sole survivor.

As far as the explination of Kryptonians looking like Humans, I am fairly on the fence, I don't think it is bad to mention something like some one posted earlier but I think you have to keep it as breif as possible.

P.S. do I have to be here for a certain amount of time before I can have an avatar and a sig? Thanks!

Sorry :) totally mixed two threads together. My bad.

I prefer Superman the sole survivor. While I do like Supergirl and Zod, I can live without them.

Definitely the sole survivor. But enjoy having him find characters that give him hope there are more (but that he's wrong and there aren't).

I prefer Superman to be the lone survivor of his world. Though it was World of New Krypton that brought me back to reading Superman on a monthly basis, I dislike retcons that affect a character's mythos. There is no point to Superman being who he is, if other Kryptonians appear with the same powers.

It makes Superman seem less awe inspiring. Honestly, I feel that any need to explore his feelings as the lone survivor of a race, while being on earth, can be taken care of via his friendship to J'onn. After all, he shares a similar background and feels just as lonely on earth.

I prefer Superman as the sole survivor myself. Between post-COIE/pre-IC and the DCAU, there's all sorts of to-the-point ways to reintroduce concepts like Kara, Zod, Kandor, etc. WITHOUT having to jettison Superman's "last son of Krypton" status in the process.

Personally I prefer Superman being the only survivor. If there are a lot of other Kryptonians out there, then that introduces too many unknown elements - Superman's no longer unique, his powers are not unique and there are others out there just as strong as him, etc. Plus, why would he stay on Earth and make it his home if there are other survivors out there who would naturally band together to rebuild Krypton on some other world?

However, making Superman the only survivor also raises some questions. Why was he the only one sent away into space from a race of millions/billions? If the Kryptonians were so advanced that they were able to dispatch criminals to a different dimension (Phantom Zone), how come no-one got off planet apart from the baby child of a single scientist? How come no-one was off-planet at the time of the destruction?

They could play the angle that Jor-El had only just discovered space travel in time to dispatch Kal El, but this doesn't sit comfortably with all the other amazing technology they managed to create.

Whatever way they do it, it will take a bit of thought.

That much has already been explained. The other Kryptonians doubted Jor-El from the start. Why would they be as prepared as Jor-El was? Jor-El saw the disaster coming and prepared a ship for his only son. The other Kryptonians had no such ample preparedness, unless you count Kara. But of course that is all a retcon saying that Kal-El's uncle sent Kara to be his guardian (thus implying that Jor-El's brother also believed that Krypton was doomed). I agree with your other points though.

IMO there is just something poetic about Kal-El being the last surviving member of his race. Also, Post Crisis, Kryptonians had the necessary technological advances to build instellar ships, but they stopped doing it, essentially, because the rest of the galaxy was stupid in comparison to them. There was nothing they could gain from interstellar travel, except a dumbing down of their own society. They were at the epitome, or so they reasoned, of civilization, and as such, weren't going to let lesser cultures influence the Kryponian way of life.

Not to mention Jor-El's ancestor introduced a genetic anomoly to the kryptonian genome, so that Kryptonians were physically dependent on the planet Krypton for survival. They couldn't live off world. Only Kal-El, when Jor-El having found the flaw and removed, it from Kal-El pre-birth, in his birthing matrix.

Actually that whole birthing matrix aspect has been removed from canon. Birthright superseded M.O.S. and Secret Origins superseded Birthright. Things are pretty much back to normal now.

I know I was just making a point, John Byrne give a real reason for Kal-El to be the sole survivor of Krypton.

Superman should be the "sole survivor." Everythng John Byrne did with Supes is IMHO, quite possibly the best Superman stuff ever.

How nice that a powerful race is only tolerated if they come in very small numbers.

Agreed. Alongside the 1978 movie, of course. Young Superman, your avatar picture is what I consider the definitive SUperman image.
