It's somewhat of an unwritten rule here in the Chicago area that if you get a nasty snowstorm or whatever, and you shovel out a spot for your ride, no one else is supposed to park there. Newcomers to the area find this odd, and have tried to do this, only to get a key to their car door or something when they do it. People place chairs and other items in parking spaces to claim their territory, and for those of us that grew up here, we just accept it. What say you?

Eh, I'd say it's an everyman for himself scenario. They've got the right to park there if it's empty, but you also have the right to vandalize their car if they parked in your territory. Each action has it's pros anc cons.

I'd agree with Ferret....the apartment building I'm in has a deal with the nearby municipal parking garage, for an extra 30 a month(paid with your rent) you can park in there....so I do that

Here in CT, its pretty much every man for himself as it comes to parking spaces

I'm sorry...the "right" to vandalize someone's car?

Causing what generally amounts to hundreds of dollars in damages?

How about you just shovel IN the spot once they've parked there. That's much cleverer, much funnier, and definitely sends a message.

It was a joke, and wouldn't covering someone's car with snow be a form of vandalism?

Yeah, that seems pretty fair. Hell I get pissed if someone takes a spot in the parking lot that I'm eyeing so I'm very territorial about parking spaces. :o

You shovel out a spot... that's your spot. I mean, the spot wouldn't be cleared if it weren't for you.

So you guys don't have driveways then?

If it's on the street, in front of an apartment building, then every man for himself.

If it's in front of your house, then it might be an issue.

We need Asteroid-Man to come in here be all racist again, like he was in Terry's last thread about Chicago weather.

I guess I could take all those empty watermelon rinds that we be eating and strap them to my feet for makeshift snowshoes.

You got it.

You shovel it out, you created the spot, it's yours.

I remember a month ago one morning I walked out of my apartment and I couldn't even see the wheels on my car. Had to take the El to work.

Unless you put a lawn chair, cone, or some other Bostonian style landmark it isn't yours.

Would placing a Red Sox fan in the spot work? And, if so, would it be okay if I told them to continue standing there while I parked my car? :o

Yeah, I'd be incredibly aggravated if I cleared a place to park and someone else took it.

I'm sort of wondering...if you have to shovel out said spot...how do you even GET to the spot?

it's all fine and dandy you shovelling out a spot but once you leave it, it's anyone's take.

At the very worst case scenario, you should assume someone will take your spot and not get pissed if they do. If they then don't, it's a bonus.

First come first serve I reckon. Whoever has got the skill to get in their first, deserves it.

The question I have is why the **** do you have a car in Chicago anyway?

Take the Red Line, dumbass. :D

:doom: :doom: :doom:

Terry, they did actually pass a law or regulation a few years back that said you couldn't shovel out the spot in front of your home and then put a lawnchair or two there to hold it for ya.. Everyone still does it.May be technically illegal ,but its the code of the streets.'Move my lawnchair and park in my spot, your car is gettin keyed up'.Everyone knows the code.

This is why I no longer live in the city. In fact I no longer live in a state that snows with any amount of consequence.
