Barry. The lack of color hurts.The Showcase collections lack color and have cheaper paper, but they are affordable. The Archive collections are in color and have high quality paper, but they are expensive.

But anyway, i highly suggest buying it especially if you're a "casual" Flash fan. Personally, I think it's really cool to be able to read Flash's early encounters with the Rogues.

If you have trouble reading comics from the freakin' 50's, then pass. I respect them for the fact that they were able to create great characters and all, but I just can't read that old s**t. It's freakin' unreadable for me. Same with those Marvel Essentials. (which is what these showcase versions are basically.)

So it's up to you, but i'd suggest you just start with Waid's first run and go from there.

Dude, but what about the early Kane/Finger Batman stories? The writing then was excellent.

The first Joker story, in my opinion surpasses anything that followed with the exception of maybe The Killing Joke and The Man Who Laughs. I am thrilled to hear that Nolan's Joker will be based primarily on his early appearances.
