Im not for this one bit, its weird...

They've been campaigning for a century to make the spelling of the English language easier and recently picketed a spelling bee in the US to make their point. Welcome to the Simplified Spelling Society.

Masha Bell, a member of the society and author of Understanding English Spelling, believes that reform of the spelling of the English language could help children learn to read and make life easier for some adults too.

Prof Vivian Cook, a linguist, expert in second language learning and author of Accommodating Brocolli in the Cemetery, believes changing spellings would be unnecessary, expensive and could harm children's ability to read.
We pitched the two, spelling reformer and spelling traditionalist, into a battle to persuade the other. Here they debate the merits of spelling systems, in the form of short e-mails.
Some of Ms Bell's entries are partly-written in simplified spelling.

this idea is terrible...and how is turning Memory into "memmory" and Most into "moast" making it more simple? They're getting longer. Sad.

This reminds me of how they wanted to incorporate ebonics into the school system in California. LOL

The idea of spelling is quite ridiculous because it's all about getting a message across.

Putting things in the right context is probably more appropriate in this day to age.

The only problem with this is that someone with an inability to spell probably is more likely to have the content of their work questioned more than someone who has no troubles with spelling.

This is so idiotic, it is not even funny. Why reward people who can't spell?

Spelling doesn't matter to me much, but to make a society for bad spelling is completely moronic.

Spelling changes are based on political/cultural logic; it's never done for simplification's sake.

For example, the american spelling of words (ie, color for colour -- yes folks, there was a time when "color" looked as dumb as "moast" up there) was the beginning of Americana. It was not done to simplify spelling per se, but rather to distinguish a former colony as its own unique culture. Another good example is the communist drive for "simplied Chinese" throughout the 1900s, another "reform" to symbolize cultural progress.

Good luck to them, but they need cultural fire to facilitate this cause.

there are a few words that could do with a respelling, but those examples above are ridiculous.

Addicted - adicted
Anyone - ennywun < you're pronouncing it wrong; "annywun"
Are - ar
Beautiful - butiful "beau" is borrowed latin. Why not beautyfull? Or even beautiful? Oh, wait....
Becoming - becumming :o:up:
Benefit - bennefit Why add an N here, but take away a D in "addicted"?
Couple - cupl k.
Difference - difrence or, diferens?
Have - hav
Health - helth
Learn - lern nice
Low - lo that's already a word. You can't spell "trussed" like "trust" just because it's simpler. You're just muddling things up in other ways.
Memory - memmory my favorite
Money - munny where're the kingdom hearts fans? :word:
More - mor moar?
Most - moast Adding the "a" is redundant. How about something functional like "moste", or just leaving it alone?
One - wun
Only - onely
People - peeple sure
Phonic - phonnic fonic?
Poor - por k
Single - singl why not take the E off "peeple" too? "seengl"?

Some of those actually look kinda close to their International Phonetic Alphabet equivalents, but the reason we don't use IPA in every day language is because you need the letters in the word to determine how to pronounce it.

i think you can thank all the impatient internet nerds who can't take the time to write "hey, that's funny!" so they put "lol" or "rofl"... and all the idiot text message senders who write things like "k thx l8r" and abbreviate the word people with "ppl", etc...

congrats, guys.

Agreed.

I would change the spelling of the following:

debt -> det
colonel -> kernol
read -> reed (I'm reeding the book)
read -> red (I have red the book)
blood -> blud

read -> reed (I'm reeding the book)
read -> red (I have red the book)

I wouldn't really have a problem with any of the ones you said but these, because you're simply replacing one homonym set with two, which would ultimately be more confusing.

But to read the book and to have read the book are not pronounced the same... Perhaps Rede and Redd ...

There are many words that are spelt the same but have different meanings depending on their context... I just think that a word should be spelt the way it is pronounced and not have multiple different spellings.

Which Witch

****, I wasn't thinking when I said homonym, and now I can't think of the word I was really looking for, and yeah, those would work better.

I agree with you on that, but your original solutions just made the problem worse.

Why is the Simplified Spelling Society spelled correctly, then?

Simplifid Spln Sositi?

Smplfied Spl Socti?

Props for the KH reference, Honey Vibe. I was thinking the same thing.
