"Sir Elton John has said he would like to see all organised religion banned and accused it of trying to "turn hatred towards gay people".

Organised religion lacked compassion and turned people into "hateful lemmings", he told the Observer.

But the musician said he loved the idea of the teachings of Jesus Christ and the beautiful stories about it which he had learned at Sunday school.

And he said there were many gays he knew who loved their religion.

'Doesn't work'

His comments were made in a special gay edition of the Observer Music Monthly Magazine, where he was interviewed by Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears.

"I think religion has always tried to turn hatred towards gay people," he said. "Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays.

"But there are so many people I know who are gay and love their religion."

According to the singer-songwriter, 59, his solution would be to "ban religion completely, even though there are some wonderful things about it".

He added: "I love the idea of the teachings of Jesus Christ and the beautiful stories about it, which I loved in Sunday school and I collected all the little stickers and put them in my book.

"But the reality is that organised religion doesn't seem to work. It turns people into hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate."

He also said that the problems experienced by many gays in former nations of the Soviet bloc, such as Poland, Latvia and Russia were caused by the church supporting anti-gay movements.

'God's people'

And he called on the leaders of major religions to hold a "conclave" to discuss the fate of the world - which he said was "near escalating to World War Three".

"I said this after 9/11 and people thought I was nuts," he said. "It's all got to be dialogue - that's the only way. Get everybody from each religion together and say 'Listen, this can't go on. Why do we have all this hatred?'

"We are all God's people; we have to get along and the [religious leaders] have to lead the way. If they don't do it, who else is going to do it? They're not going to do it and it's left to musicians or to someone else to deal with it."

He also said he would continue to campaign for gay rights.

"I'm going to fight for them, whether I do it silently behind the scenes or so vocally that I get locked up."

He kinda has a point, Buddhism is the only religion I know that seems to accept homosexuality.

How is saying "ban religion" any different from saying "ban homosexuality"?

There is no difference. If homosexulaity was banned, Elton John would be causing holy hell.

Religion is what you do
Sexuality is what you are.

Seriously, wtf:confused:

Well there are sooooooo many good reasons why religion should be banned anyway, this is just one of many DOWN WITH YOUR ORGANISED STUPIDITY, HATRED AND CONTROL!

I say ban organized religion for the plethora of other reasons instead of homosexuality. There are a lot of bigger things going on in the world than men being with men and women being with women.

You can easily start a gay religion if you want. If L. Ron Hubbard can start his own religion than so can gay people.

Though I liked that "hateful lemmings" comment. Because some strongly religious people, the ones who try to push their cause on other people, do come off as very hateful.

But, yeah, Elton John is gonna get nailed by the "hateful lemmings" for saying those things. :oldrazz:

Why? Do gay men stand outside your house having anal sex with each other or something? Do you think that if a gay man brushes shoulders with you that you'll catch the "disease"? :wow:

yes to both questions.:o

I'm catholic and I understand why he feels this way. I don't agree with everything that the catholic church says and I certainly don't agree with their views towards homosexuality.

I don't see why some people feel the new to poke and pry about how some people live their lifes. If it's not harming anybody, who cares?

I can understand his sentiments exactly. I do think the world would be a more peaceful place if it wasn't for religion constantly promoting hatred and violence between different people.

If you're serious I truly feel sorry for you. Lets do a little role reversal, since you're all Mr. Homophobic. Imagine man/man relationships and woman/woman relationships were the majority and they ruled the government and the world. And imagine them trying to outlaw and outcast people who wanted to have different gendered sexual partners? Imagine sneaking behind peoples backs to see a girl and if you were caught you were treated like you weren't a human being. Yes, try to imagine that if your closed mind can process it.

Homophobia would still exist if religion didn't.

I'd say the majority of straight young males are probably homophobic and it has nothing to do with religion

Actually the root of all homophobia was in religion. Homosexuals were accepted in a lot of countries all over the world until religion poisoned people against them. So if religion had never came around, people would still be totally accepting of gay people because they would have no reason to think otherwise.

Like I always say, beliefs are good, organizing them into rules is bad.

Too bad organized religion will, unfortunately, always exist because human beings have a herd mentality and they don't like to think for themselves.

Marrying a 12 year old was considered fine and dandy in a lot of countries as well:o

Personally I think thats a load of rubbish, seriously do you think guys using "Gay" as a derogatory term is because 1000's of years ago most religions said its wrong?

I guess I'll never understand what there is to fear about people who are homosexual. Do people seriously think that gay men will come in the night and rape them? Do people actually believe that it's a disease or something?

I don't understand why there are a large amount of heterosexual people who literally FEAR homosexuality. I grew up with a kid who was gay and it didn't make me gay. I'm straight as an arrow and he's gayer than gay can be but we can still hang out and relate to one another.

But it's that lovely word Fear that gets peoples panties in a twist. If people would stop being afraid and things it might make this world a BIT more tolerable.

It's not "most" religions anyway, just many of them. Today, it's most notably the Western religions that attempt to limit human sexuality, but if you look back, the ancient Greek religion pretty much promoted having sex as a fun and acceptable pasttime.
