Slow death of Saturday & weekday cartoons

Kids still do that today, but they don't need to rush because channels like Nicktoons and the like are around

I think the article greatly underestimates the Childrens Television Act and the E/I...it most certainly was a contributing factor to an already declining situation....cable outlets were offering more variety and dedicating networks to kids and animated programming

With most homes having cables or satellite TV, and access to dedicated children programming like Nick and Disney 24/7, I don't think Saturday morning cartoons are really needed anymore.

the market shifted with the advent of cable tv, thats all

I also think that Fox's Animated Sunday Lineup played a role in the decline of Fox Kids. Since Fox Sunday is nothing but an aging "The Simpsons" and "McFarlane-O-Mania" I don't think there was any need for kids cartoons on that network.

Fox, at the beginning, had some ok cartoons but a bulk of animated programming on weekday afternoons back then was syndicated....I always liked Foxs' Peter Pan and the Pirates

I honestly believe that it really boils down to whether or not the stations can make a profit. I mean, explain why there's so many judge shows during weekday afternoons or talk shows. Children's geared programming has simply become a liability (this is were the E/I rule becomes a problem) for the broadcast networks. So it's easy to understand why we keep seeing third parties pretty much overtake all of the broadcast network Saturday morning schedules.

id agree..... its a safe assumption to make that 90 percent of animated programming during the 80's and 90's was there to sell toys and sell ad time to companies targeting kids

I liked those toy cartoons. At least they were "flawed". Alot of these cartoons today are too scared to do anything PG I suppose. So sterile.

Whenever they rereleased the old Sesame Street episodes it said on the package it wasn't for kids. Really? Come on!

Now they can't show Bugs Bunny in drag.

Cartoon Network had on Looney Tunes this weekend and a couple of the Bugs Bunny in drag ones were on....Sterile as compared to?? I think we older fans tend to forget that the programming is aimed at children, not us

I admit I overreact a bit. Those Veggie Tales raise my ire a bit. I saw a Looney Tunes where they blurred out Elmer and Bugs doing black face. I never see Speedy Gonzales anymore.

I'm a liberal that's worried that cartoons will become too PC.

:D

IF I HAVE KIDS ONE DAY I WOULDN'T LET THEM WATCH ANYTHING ON CARTOON NETWORK OR FOX THE SMIPONS OR FAMILY GUY BOTH ARE DIRTY KIDS SHOULDN'T WATCH STUFF LIKE THAT.MY COSION TIFFANY KIDS DON'T LET THEM WATCH SPQUEN BOB SQUARE PANTS. IWOULD LET THEM WATCG IT Iwould let them watch honk kong phooy ,topcat, scooby doo, THE the flistones the jetsons, and THE SUFRMS LOONEY TOONES ,DOUGthe classics.

thats why they have tv ratings at the top of the screen....so people are informed what is suitable for younger viewers and what isn't...its ignorant to assume that just because something is animated means its for kids
